If you could grow only 5 species of cactus or succulent from your current collection what would they be? Bit of a tricky one as most people have far more than five species!
I'll start it off with my top five cacti that I'd keep if all others had to go:
1: Echinopsis Chamacaereus. This is so easy to grow and tolerates frost, and always produces a great display or orange red flowers in the summer.
2: Opuntia Robusta. Always a great looking plant with its blue coloured pads, very tough trouble free plant too.
3: Mahueniopsis Darwinii. Dwarf alpine Opuntia from Argentina, intensely spiny plant and stands up well to frost if kept dry.
4: Ferocactus Hamatacanthus. The hardiest of the Ferocacti, spectacular spines and flowers readily in summer.
5: Opuntia Aciculata. Beautiful plant with its short orange spines, grows easily and fairly resistant to frost.
I value a bit of hardiness in cacti as its so much easier to keep plants that don't need to be heated in the winter, where I live all the above only need to be sheltered from the rain, they don't need any other care in winter.
