| Thanks for the new thread Chris...I just love those Flickers! I was out all morning today trying to get a shot of one...I was so frustrated as they kept landing in trees behind me!! I wish I could get them to come to the waterer or feeders.
GP...congrats on the the Hummer on the last thread...lucky you!
Marna...to answer your question: I have never seen an American Tree Sparrow... I know they get them in the northern part of the state. Do you have them in your area?
Resin...thanks for the ID on the hawks on the previous thread!

Margaret, that Kookaburra is really something!
rose, that Eurasian Collared Dove sure looks nice. Easy on the eyes.
reddirtretiree, I've never seen an American Pipit. Nice pic.
gardenpom, last week-end I road as a motorcycle marshall for a bicycle event and saw lots of vultures, but didn't have my camera. Well, I went back on the route the other day and didn't see the first one.
rose, just the other day I saw some kind of hawk make an attempt to land on a street sign, right by my house. But some littler bird chased it away.

Burd - WOW, you were busy. Those Double-crested Cormorants reminded me of the ones I've been seeing.
gardenpom, cool, two with one shot - White-winged Dove and Collared Dove. How does a regular ole mourning dove compare in size to those two?
MargaretK - I still think that Young Kookaburra is one unique looking character.
I sat for a little while and only saw male and female cardinals late this evening. I had an excess of Safflower seed so I filled many of my feeders with it.. I don't think it is as good an attractant as my other seeds mixes.

Depends on the amount of natural food available. If there's been a good seed crop on lots of things, you won't get many birds visiting. If it's been a poor seed year, you'll have lots of hungry visitors.

| It is pouring down rain here - POURING!. And yet, I was surprised at how much activity was happening around my feeders, in the pouring rain - I guess the birds are not as influenced by the rain as much as I am. Out in the rain I definitely saw House Finches, Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, Cardinals, Goldfinches and House Sparrows. Immediately outside my door, to the right, under my wheelchair porches' roof is a Tea Olive bush and it was literally "alive" with birds. I'm gonna scatter of seed on my porch (may even hang a tube feeder) for the birds that "have sense enough to get out of the rain".
So, I stayed in and have enjoyed seeing all the bird photos online here at DG.
burn_2007 - nice capture of the Hairy WP. I've never seen one, I always see Downy WPs.
VA_Wild_Rose - I really liked the composition of the egret and its shadow at sunrise.
nanny_56 - I particularly enjoyed the male Downy WP and Tifted Titmouse - nice.
ducbucln - better photos of the Bald Eagle - the one you took looks real good to me. And the White-crowned Sparrow was sweet, too.
Galanthophile - congrats on the lifer. I've never seen a long tailed tit, either.
gardenpom - Nice Turkey Vulture. Whenever I go somewhere without my camera, I see lots of them. But, I have yet to see one when I have my camera. When I finally do, it will be a lifer for me - as far as the pic is concerned, that is.
Bye Ya'll

| Galanthophile, your Long-tailed Tit is just beautiful!! I'd sure love to see one here.
GP good one of the Vulture. Wish you'd have gotten a photo of the Grackles. I got so excited when another birder here in our area spotted 3 of the long-tailed Grackles-rare for us. Still haven't seen one myself though. |

| Thanks! Male or female? Or do they look the same?
I saw some other near this one but the were plainer and more camoflaged.
I was thinking they were females, and this was a male. |

| VA Rose your S. P. is in (winter plumage) by now, and I think males and females pretty much look the same. Easier to tell juveniles apart from adults. |

Sexes fairly similar on Semipalmated Plover. Your photo is an adult winter, the drabber ones would be first-winter immatures. In summer, the breast band is black.

| Boo Winter!
Well since there's lots of blue on this thread (painted buntings, blue jays, bluebirds), I'll add another Blue Jay.
These birds are so funny with their daily peanut routine. This one landed every time with the tail feather spread. There were starlings in the area, wonder if it was trying to make itself look bigger.

| And this week marks the return of the Red-bellied woodpecker. I've had just one female here daily. She's pretty funny sometimes. She'll take a seed, then fly over to the tree and either hide it or use the tree to help her crack it open. Here she is with a seed. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Thanks, Pelle. I am practicing with my new camera...it is exciting!
I love the shots of the red-bellies, Mrs. Ed. I have them here, too and they are so much fun to watch. I have a pair here now and usually have more once it gets really cold. They don't like the suet as much as they like the berry/nut mix that I put out. I love that they will allow the smaller birds to feed without making a fuss...they are very sweet. Wow...purple finches!!! I hardly EVER see them around here. Lucky you...I am jealous! |
