I'm in a dry climate, so rot is not an issue at all, I just have a moderately shady end in one of my iris beds when the tree gets fully leafed out about mid June. The rest of the bed gets less shade and those bloom just fine (in fact they seem to appreciate the wee bit of afternoon shade they do get as it's a very dry bed between the street and the sidewalk).
Input appreciated!
