While visiting NJ I came across this strange looking berry bush. It had a round cluster of blue berries. I am having trouble identifying it because every plant that I am finding has a different type of stem structure. The stem has sort of an oval shape. The stem extends upwards to a round ball-like structure which then has straight stems branching out to a single berry at each end (these stems do not branch out again to other berries like the Arrowwood plant).

The fruit looks like that of an Arailiad. Can you show the whole plant?

Could also be a Smilax. Compare this one: http://www.inhs.illinois.edu/animals_plants/plants/ilgallery...

Thanks Resin, that does look very much alike. Seeing the plant will help verify.
