This may sound odd, but could mice set up camp within straw protected hydrangea? Has anyone encountered this problem? I was doing yardwork in my garden beds and was alarmed at all the mice scattering around my mulch/leaves. I recall my sister complaining about mice overwintering within her rosebeds and pretty much destroying her rose canes and rose rootballs. I have chicken wire and straw protection around some of my ES hydrangeas. I have field mice that like to set up came wherever they can when the weather gets cold. Would it be logical to put some mouse poison under the straw just as a deterrent or will it 'melt' in the snow and harm the plants as spring arrives?
