Northern gardeners,
Do you mulch your hostas in winter? If so, do you pile mulch over the whole plant or keep it away from the crown?
I never needed to in 15 plus years with my first dozen or so Hostas, (about 6 varieties). Then I got room for a new garden and thought I could do Hostas because they had been no trouble. Well, in the new garden they are all trouble.
Some that did well the first three years seemed to diminish this past season and I noticed some roots are showing above ground so thought I'd try mulching but wasn't sure the best way to do it. I put crumpled leaves around the crown, not over it.
I should have posted this question sooner as we had our first snow last night. ( Finally- the perennilals had been gone for weeks.) Only about 3 inches. If it holds I won't be trying to mulch, but we've had such squirrely weather the last few years, it may all melt away.
