| This little thing just appeared out of a pot of philodendrons. I thought the foliage was interesting and let it stay, and it began to bloom a few days ago. I'd like to know what it is, because I've never seen anything like it before.

| Here is a picture of some of the foliage. I do not know if this is normal growth, or a result of it "reaching" for light. But all the "leaf" sections look like this. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Looks like dill to me too. You should be able to tell by the smell, crush a leaflet in your hand and smell it.

| Mishal, here are pics of both Fennel and dill for comparison. I agree with Resin, given the leaves shown in your picture, this appears to be common fennel. Fennel has a fairly large bulb.

Dill has flattened seeds.
Fennel has rounded seeds.
What does it smell like.
Dill, smells like Dill!
Fennel has a Licorice or Anise scent. |

| Not Dill, that doesn't have quite such fine wiry thread-like leaves.
| Quoted: | | Fennel has a fairly large bulb. |
Only some cultivars have the bulb, most don't

| There are no seeds yet (haven't seen anything visiting the flowers either). Unfortunately, I don't know what Dill smells like (don't have any dried stuff in the cabinet to check either) and I don't have any anise in stock either to check. However, crushing the leaves in hand did give off a sharp, almost minty smell for a few moments, but then it went to a crushed greenery smell.
I am also unsure of what to make about the bulb/root descriptions. This plant appeared out of a four-inch pot, which is being shared with by another mystery plant (alas, I won't put any pictures up until it blooms because it looks so much like a generic wide-bladed fleshy grass, but the blooms were something else) There has been no appearance of a taproot from the bottom, and the plant itself is barely two feet high.
The flowers in all the pictures look very similar, but they aren't close-up enough for me to compare leaf-structure. Still, it looks closest to Dill, does anyone have any closer pictures of Dill leaves, or do you need closer pictures from any structure of mine to help? |

| The one thing that really steers me awy from fennel is the sperical shape of the umbel in the first picture. I'm used to seeing them only as flat umbels. |
