When I first moved into my house 6 years ago in the spring I woke up one morning and dove for cover. Someone was firing an automatic weapon in close proximity. It took me a while to figure out it was one of those buggers tapping on the metal fireplace cover. Echoed throughout the house. Now I look forward to it every spring (except for the occasional hung-over morning.) I wonder if it is a mating ritual.
Oh my gosh, that had to be frightening, glad that wasn't the case.
We've only see this guy once in the 12 years we have lived here. We have the smaller woodpecker come and go, which is why this one stumped us. He was so large.
