Must say I've been a bit of a donutaholic. I think your description of your mother's donuts, particularly the greasy as bacon bit, just cured me.
We didn't have store bought donuts back in those days Charlie, so fried donuts were all we got. I never ate them without dousing them in spices. Sometimes I can still smell those spices when they met that hot donut.
