Went to bed last night around 10:30, never could understand the New Year's Eve hoopla. Maybe it's because NYE parties were never part of my background. Maybe it's because New Years Day brings a touch of sadness. It is the absolute end of the Christmas holidays and the end of Christmas vacation. It's back to school or work and back to the same old same old. The only thing new is the number. I don't mean to sound negative here. There is still a lot to look forward to. :-)

Thanks for the new thread, Kelli.

I will not miss the last year. People say the new year is a chance to start over. Kind of like hitting the 'reset' button. But don't we have that chance everyday?

Afternoon! Kelli! What a Gorgeous looking Poinsettia Tree! Neat-O! And LOVE the Batnoical gardens! And the Islands Do look like they are only a couple of miles away! :D
Well, we are in the deep freeze here, too, altho we won't be as cold as some of you. :) Our high for the day was early this morning at 40...the high for tomorrow is supposed to be 28, with some snow.

At the moment there are 2 bowl games on - 1 on each tv. LOL! I think I'll drag out a puzzle! ;)
Bernie! LOL! You're right! It certainly Was still there this morning! :) I fell asleep watching Another ball game (Tech & Tenn). Sometimes a tv in the bedroom can be a curse!
Ric, Snows like that leaves lasting memories! Reminds me of the time I was stuck in Cleveland for the blizzard of '78. Snow in the car, snow in the front door, snow in the sliding doors from the patio...Too much snow at one time is not a good thing! and the 50 mile an hour winds make it even worse. ;) I read later that the winds actually topped 80mph at the airport.
Rann, What a great pic of the girls...& I'm so glad that you enjoyed your New Years Eve! I feel sure that the girls were thoroughly amazed!
Mau! You're a party animal! LOL! What a great way to spend the evening! :D
Celia, I like the concept of 'reset'! :D And I agree...we have a chance every day. LOL! Isis looks as if she is making a run for the door! :D ( I might get you cats names straight one of these days! ;)

Well, I shall go take a look at those 2 bowl games to check on progress...

We have always gone out on New Years Eve, but this year with Dave getting laid off and all we decided that we didn't need to spend the money. So we had pizza for dinner, then Dave made a drink for each of us a few hours later, then we got the munchies and had leftover pizza, then we drank a little more, got hungry again so Dave made pancakes, then we sat down at about 10pm and watched part of a movie and the New Years Eve show with Ryan Seacrest and Dick Clark, I feel so bad for him, he's completely there but can't talk right, that has got to be frustrating. At midnight we went outside and set some fireworks off, got cold and turned on another movie and talked about going to bed, this was at 1am, but then I found myself waking up on the couch at 2:30am ish, he was also asleep so I just left him there and I went to bed.

Sounds like all of you had a good New Years Eve!

All this talk about snow! And yes, a scared driver usually make the worse drivers. When it comes to ice, I just get in the fast lane and watch the road and cars ahead of me. It doesn't snow enough here to fart with, so not too sure how I'd handle that, but rain doesn't bother me a bit, I think I'm in NASCAR! LOL

happy new year everyone

last evening the kids skated on the rink that DH made and went sledding in the back yard the weather was beautifull just cold enough for a light snow and no wind so they stayed out there for over two hours, and went right back out after breakfast this morning and again after lunch, I am so glad to live in the country side where we have space for the kids to play outside what a way to start the year just amazing

Celia - yes! you, Bernie and anyone else is most welcome!

Kelli - sounds like you could use a trip up here over New Year's as well ... I know what you mean ... we were practically bored to tears on New Year's Eve while we were in Florida (sorry!) lol We had a small campfire in the back yard and roasted marshmallows ... and lit some spraklies ... and waited for the apple to fall ... and I'd complain how lame this all was and wanted to go home ;-) lol There's no way to miss out on the party up here ... and no way to be asleep before midnight! lol

Here's a link to a news story about last night's celebrations ... footage from the bonfire we went to last night ... you can spot Selma (along with her cousins) if you look carefully... early on there's an interview with some foreigners who have lived here for a while ... look for Selma behind the woman, she's in a red jacket with a gray/purple hat on ... I'm in frame for a split second too after that interview along with the girls and my dad, but I don't think you'll be able to spot me though ;-) http://dagskra.ruv.is/sjonvarpid/4497859/2010/01/01/5/

edited to add - if you double click the frame you get a full screen view ... still don't think you'll be able to spot me though ;-)

Thanks Kelli :-) I sure hope so ... they hand them out at the fireworkssales for free (at least the ones run by the rescue crews - the fireworks sales is their biggest fundraiser, not sure about the private ones ... I don't do business with them), so there's no reason why they shouldn't. I think eye injuries are less common after they started handing them out ... adults (at least the responsible ones) wear them too when shooting fireworks ...

Happy New Year, guys!
Kelli, thanks for starting the new thread with such wonderful pictures! I agree, first days of the New Year bring up some dissapointing that the Hollidays are over, no sadness though. We are still having one more celebration on the 7th, St John's Day. After that I'm taking off the Christmas tree and decorations .
Celia, such cute pictures of Isis! She really loves snow!LOL
Rann, great to hear you had a good time with your family! Great picture of the bonfire and the girls! Loved the video too, so many fireworks and such a huge fire, wow!
Joey, you have a lot of snow, wow!
Bernie, lots of snow at your place too, but what a wonderful view! Great photos of your family!
Rusty, sorry you are sick, but what great nurses you have!LOL Take care and get well soon!

Global Warming is kicking in!
-27.8 F this morning. Coldest we have had in many years. High temperature this coming week will be 10 on one afternoon. Most days won't get above zero.
My son was watching the weather channel. They are predicting 3 days of below freezing temps in Florida. That should raise produce prices, if there is anything to price!
Anyone down south cold ?

I'm down south! Here's what's happening in my neck of the woods.

We're right on average. Yesterday it was 49*, average temp is 50*, the low last night was 27*, the average is 30*.

It's supposed to be sunny this morning, which it is (the weather liars didn't lie!) with increasing clouds this afternoon and evening. One weather report says we're going to be in the mid 40's today, another says it will only get into the low 30's today, we're already in the low 30's and it's sunny so I don't see how that's going to happen!

It's warming up now.

Rann I can't see the video, it says I need to download Windows Media Player Firefox 11, but it won't install it. I'll have to work on it later. Very interesting about the safety goggles, what a great idea! The bigger problem lies around here with houses burning down when someone's hot fireworks ash lands on the house. That problem is slowly being alleviated with new roofs having to be either metal, tile, or composition instead of wood.

Rusty get well soon! I've had some sort of sinus thing going on too, but I feel fine. LOL about the quote, I learned how to do the quote once, actually did it once, now I don't remember how. LOL

Bernie thanks for showing the pics! I know quite a few people who have done the Iraq thing.

Adina I took a picture of that moon too, but I couldn't get it to come out like you did. It was weird, cloudy all evening and when we went out to do fireworks at midnight the clouds broke just enough to get a great view of the moon. Kinda spooked us out a bit. Cool toasts, we toasted with Hawaiian Punch and Stoli Vodka, champagne gives us heartburn.

Celia that's cool Isis will play in the snow, if it's below 50* Tiga wont go out at all.

Kelli I love those pics, reminds me of when I was there and too young to care about flowers LOL (mid 20's)

Well I've got to get off of this, Dave's cousin Alice from Dallas is in town at her house way out in the sticks and is having a huge New Year's lunch, supposed to be at noon, it's after 10 and I haven't taken a shower yet and we have an hour drive to get there.

Have a great day everyone, I plan on taking my camera!

Celia, whenever I see a car from the '50s, I think of my dad's 1955 Oldsmobile. It was his everyday car until 1977 when he couldn't get parts for it anymore. It was just like this car http://classiccars.com/20484.car except the upholstery was different (and nicer styled, IMO). Also, my dad's car was in really sad shape when he got rid of it, but it is legendary to me. He sold it to a guy who was hoping to restore it but he couldn't find parts so he sold it to someone else and my dad lost track of where it went. I suppose it or its parts still live on somewhere. When he got rid of the car, it seemed so ancient ('50s styles vs '70s styles). The car I drive now is over 20 years old, but it doesn't seem nearly as ancient. Maybe it's partly because I am older than my car but I was younger than my dad's car. He still has a 1961 Oldsmobile convertible that is in original condition.

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!! I am SOOOOOO overdue at writing to y'all.. I can't believe it's been since JULY!!! My apologies ..I have been VERY busy, especially during the fall season with my 2 bazaars. I was busy trying to get crafts done.. then our summer heat got to me & I was sick from the heat so I couldn't do much.
Our Christmas was busy at church since hubby & I are in the music ministry.. we had a quiet holiday season.
Our weather was really nice up to Christmas Eve, when our area got 5 inches of snow... now, for some areas that's nothing, but for our area here in Texas it shut the whole town down!! It was very icy too. We are now into the cold temps & close to freezing temps. We are due to get VERY cold temps as the week goes on. It hasn't been like this in Texas since the 1920's!!!
Hope everyone is well & will try to be more diligent at getting on here more often!! :0)

I had a 57 Chevy back when everyone had one. Mine was customized with a souped up engine. Transmission couldn't take the power & was broke most of the time.
I also had a 55 Olds before the Chevy. A big 2 door hardtop. Of course that was not a hot rod type so I traded it for the Chevy.
When I sold the Chevy, I ordered the only new car I ever bought. It was a 66 Olds Cutlass. It was one of the muscle cars of the era. Olds answer to the Super Sport Chevy you show in the last picture.

Now back to reality, it is extremely cold here. Already -15 before dark. Dark in a few minutes here. It might get above zero tomorrow!

Neither car or pickup would start today.

I wouldn't have wanted to start at -15 either, Bernie! LOL

This morning I went out to attempt to donate blood. I have O-, the universal donor type, so the blood center calls me regularly to ask for a donation. I have very low iron, though (I'm not anemic, it's just lower than the blood center's "standard"), so about 75% of the time when I try to donate, I get rejected. Bummer. I actually had to scrape the windows when I went out today!! That doesn't happen very often! LOL It's a good thing I kept my ice scraper when I moved down here. :-) It was just below freezing last night, so it was still quite chilly this morning. It warmed up very nicely this afternoon, though.

Anyone want a dog?? About 2 days ago, a black lab mix showed up at our house while the girls were in the front yard playing on their scooters. I'm always a little nervous about stray dogs around the girls - especially ones that are nearly as big as they are! - but this one is very gentle. The bunnies petted him and talked to him, and named him "Alpha" (they got Up! for Christmas. LOL) When we came in, he really wanted to come in, too. We had to kinda scootch around him to get in the door. He eventually disappeared (or at least I couldn't see him the dark), and I figured he had gone home. Yesterday he showed up again, and was outside our house pretty much all day. When we went to bed last night, I could see him lying on our front doorstep, poor doggy... It was below freezing (barely) last night, so I'm sure he was cold. This morning, he was still here. I asked the neighbors about him, but no one has claimed him. Our very sweet next door friends brought out a bowl of dog food for him, since we don't have any. He's curled up on a blanket in the flower bed right next to the door right now. (Maybe he'll keep the begonias warm. LOL) He hasn't barked at all... He hasn't wagged his tail much either - he's obviously scared and keeps his tail tucked underneath him. He soooo sweet... We really don't want a dog, though, especially a big one. :-( We put out a bunch of "found dog" signs. I hope someone comes soon to claim him! I don't think he's very old, although he's definitely not little. He's skinny, but not starving looking, so I don't think he's been lost very long. I think he just hasn't filled out yet. If no one comes to claim him tomorrow, we'll take him to the shelter where we got the kitties.

HIgh of 15 low of -5 with wind chills around -20 this morning. It is very bitter but majority of the people are out and about today getting last minute stuff done before they have to go to work.

My road is still a solid sheet of ice and my truck is still our main mode of travel. My mom's car could barely make the hill today and only after she backed up past our driveway to our neighbor's then kept a steady speed all the way up. Slid around alot but made it. My dad hasn't tried his truck yet so he might have to use my truck on Monday.

Here in NC, it is brutally cold in the mountains. For us, a day that never gets as high as 30 deg. and with a howling wide is rugged. I had to go help move a lot of boxes and other items from a museum building we are using to the storage area until our new building is finished. After going by at 8:30 this morning to chop snow-turned-ice off the stairs to the porch for a half hour, I had to go to the old museum building and meet a man who was bringing a leaf blower to sweep out the storage site (an old house). The wind had picked up but we had to string long extension cords from the new museum site to the storage house, about 200 feet. I left him there and went to help load trucks and lead them to the storage site. Then, after doing some further cleaning, I started moving everything into the storage house as the men put items on the porch. There was no heat in the storage house either.
The work kept me pretty warm, but my face is sensitive to cold and when I got to warm place, it tingled for about an hour.

Marylyn you've got DMail.

Celia we'd ALL love to have either of those cars back... except in the Winter.
Too much power to hold on slippery roads.
I've had both... loved them both... couldn't drive either Dec-Feb...
Had a Super Bee too... it was the worst!
Now I just drive point A - B cars... lol!

Everyone stay Warm and Safe!
We barely broke 20 here today.
It's 14 (WC 6) going down to around 10 (WC 0)
Then a 'warming' trend starts.
We should break freezing by Weds... below average on the Highs (should be 37)...
but w/ average Lows for this time of year... around 24..
Long as we keep getting Sun I'm OK w/ it...

Looks like kiska picked a good time to be in the PNW...
Above average temps are expected.

13F with heavy snow falling this evening. We've had steady snow the past few days and it's really piling up here! We are under a Lake Effect Snow Warning until Sunday 7:00 pm. with heavy snows and high winds expected this weekend.

rann...I enjoyed the video and the photos. Looks like quite a party!

rusty...Hope you're feeling better soon. I have a friend who calls illnesses of that type the "creepin' crud"!

kelli...Those photos sure look inviting. The older I get the more I understand all of the "snowbirds" who spend spring , summer and fall here and head south for the winter.

Good morning!

Clear cold day here today ... not as cold as many of you though ... if it gets below 20F here we consider it VERY cold! lol
21F (-6C) feels like 21F ... practically calm, slight breeze from ESE at 1 mph. Sunrise was at 11:17 am, sunset will be at 3:48 pm ... that's almost half an hour longer than at solstice :-)

EB - beautiful photo! :-) Glad you enjoyed the video :-) It IS a big party ... fireworks going off in every direction as far as you can see! :-)

Kelli - beautiful buildings. They look like something you could see in Spain ... but they seem "newer" ... which is probably the case ;-) lol

Marylyn - poor dog. Hope you find him a home.

Bernie - brrrr that's cold! Compared to your temps ... we're warm and toasty! lol And yet it feels very cold to me ;-) lol Doesn't get below 10F here in the south at least ... normal winter temps here are mostly in 20's - 30's ... 10's are rare. But then again it hardly gets above 65F in the summer ...

Crissy - sorry you couldn't see the video ... could you view the link to the news video? ... there are some fireworks views there as well as the bonfire ;-) Interesting about the roofs over there ... no wooden roofs here or we'd be in big trouble! lol

Hope you all have a Great day!

kwanjin, Our little local museum is moving to new quarters, in a 1905 house which is undergoing a complete rehabilitation. So we are packing and moving most things to a house adjacent to the new museum property. We need to get out of our current space before Feb. 1 so we don't have to pay another month's rent. It is amazing how much stuff we accumulated, some of it not cataloged yet. I think we have an awful lot of old kitchen utensils and tools and plan to set up a century old kitchen for an exhibit.
Boy are my legs sore today from all that lifting and carrying. I am the only woman that did much of that and I am 66.
It is only 19 degrees here and it is 11:30 so I guess I'm glad we did it in the cold and wind yesterday because it's worse today.

18 with heavy snow now expected through Tuesday. Both interstates near us have been closed at various times today due to heavy blowing snow and many accidents. After shoveling for many, many years I finally broke down and bought a used snow blower last spring. Well, a clutch cable broke on it yesterday so I'm back to shoveling until I can get a replacement. I shoveled around 18" out of the drive this morning and another 8" late this evening. By the time I finished there was another 1-2" of new snow on the ground. The bands of lake effect snow have been sitting on top of us and dumping. The radar showed a band blowing from the lake all the way to State College in the middle of the state. My back hurts! :(

10 day forecast calls for highs in the teens and 20's and snow, snow, snow!

kwanjin...Thanks, I am warm!

adinamiti...pretty tree! The snow here is the light fluffy stuff too.

Happy New Year everyone!
We had 7 adults and 3 children here at my daughter's house on New Year's Eve and two more showed up on the 1st. They all left yesterday and it has been really quiet around here since. It's just me and my daughter and SIL here now plus our two dogs. We awoke to 3 inches of snow (I can hear you northerners laughing and rolling on the floor) which shuts down everything down here in the south. LOL Anyway, "all that snow" was a good excuse to just "veg out" today. We had homemade soup for lunch which is always good on a cold and snowy day.
Thanks for the new thread, Kelli! love the start-up photo of the poinsettia tree and the Botanic garden.
Celia: I'm here--just haven't been online much the last few days. Yes, every day we have another opportunity to right the wrongs we have committed against others, forgive those who have wronged us and make a brand new start! We don't have to wait until Jan. 1st to do that.
Rann: I enjoyed the video clip with the fireworks--haven't had a chance to look at the other one yet.
Rusty: I hope you are feeling better by now.
welcome to woodspirit--I think this is the first time I have seen you posting. Do come back anytime!
I'm behind since I haven't been here in a couple of days but I have enjoyed everyone's photos and comments. I finally have a snow photo of my own to post--LOL--this what we awoke to this morning. As I said, I can hear you folks up north laughing at our "big snow" but it is a lot for us. I am at my daughter's house in Harrison, AR. Where I live in Cabot, AR, they received no snow.
Our high today here in Harrison didn't make it out of the 20's. A little while ago it was 23F here. Low tonight to be around 12F. BRRRRRR

Hey, Crissy, Houston actually won! Don't ask me how... they were losing and I walked away from the tv to do a couple of things, and when I came back, they were ahead by 14! In order for them to make it to the playoffs, they need 2 of 3 teams to win: Baltimore, Jets, and Denver. So far only Denver appears to be cooperating - and they still have 6 minutes to play, which is a lot of time in football! LOL

The doggy was still here this morning, and when we came home from church. We took him to the shelter this afternoon because he is already shivering, and it is going to get colder and start raining tonight. It cost us $60 to leave him there (which means we'll be eating a lot of veggie soup this week!) but it's a great shelter - they take good care of the animals, and are very careful who they allow to adopt them, so we were happy to do it. Of course about an hour after Charles got home from the shelter, we had a knock on the door, and it was the dog's owner. (sigh...) I don't know if she made it there before the shelter closed for the day, but at least he'll be home by tomorrow night. :-)

We have a cold front coming! They are even using the S word for Wednesday night and Thursday morning! I'm not sure Houston has ever gotten snow twice in the same winter.

You southern types need some S--- once in a while so you know what the rest of the world puts up with. LOL!
I would come south for the winter, but I don't like to be away from home for long period of time. I can hide in the house!

-20 now, hope it don't go colder tonight. Got to a balmy -2 this afternoon.

Romania is a country I would love to know how they are doing since all the changes a few years back. We have a couple living here from Transylvania in Romania. He says the area here in the mountains of North Carolina is very similar to that part of Romania. The funny coincidence is that our county here is named Transylvania. In English it means "across the woods" or "through the woods."

Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

I've got a lot of catching up to do. We've been inundated with visits from family and friends some expected and most not, but always welcome. Everything I planned on doing for the last week hasn't happened LOL!

We're 20* colder than normal and we will be in this cold spot for the week. I like cold, but this is nuts. I don't know how you guys North of us deal with this for months at a time. We 're cold enough for snow, but no precip on the radar.

All this talk about football teams has my head swimming, LOL, because I don't keep up with any of that "sports stuff". :o)) May the best team win--whichever one it turns out to be!!! :o))
Kelly: enjoying your photos, as usual. It's good to know that flowers are blooming somewhere in our country! LOL
Rusty, JuJu is sooooo cute! Hope you get to feeling better soon!
Marylyn: glad the dog's owner showed up and that the poor thing will be reunited with them today. :o)) I'm amazed that you get any snow at all in Houston!
Welcome back, Sharon! We've missed you around here! All that cold air down in your state will surely affect the citrus growers. not to mention the price of oranges and orange juice, etc.!! Hope it warms up down there soon! My poinsettia is beginning to "red-up", too.
Bernie: we've had a cold blue moon down here, too, but my camera doesn't take very good photos of the moon. They usually come out all blurry.
I hope all my DG friends stay safe and warm this winter, where ever you happen to live!!
It appears that a major portion of the country is experiencing a "deep freeze" at this point in time--even the deep south!
It is still cold here at my DD's house in Harrison and I heard that the Cabot schools(where I live) are closed so they must have gotten enough snow yesterday to close them down. :o(( I was planning on driving home tomorrow but it will all depend on the highway conditions. Around here, even 2" of snow shuts things down!
Here's the current weather for Harrison (I noticed that the low here on Thursday night is predicted to be -3F!!!)

# Today: Some morning flurries with mostly sunny skies expected later in the day. Very cold. High near 20F. Winds NNW at 10 to 15 mph.
# Tonight: Mostly clear. Very cold. Low 7F. Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph.

Mau, that's a lot of snow at your DD's place!
Marylyn, so nice of you to get the doggie to the shelter!
Joey, wow, you have more snow than us!
Kelli, thanks for posting those warm shots of such beautiful flowers! The Ceanotus spinosus looks like a Hoya!
It's still snowing here, slowly and no wind, but it will warm up again and the snow is going to melt. They have forecasted high temps for next months, up to 60...so unusual! 30 for now.

Hey, Marilyn! I forgot to answer you about getting the cold my DD had...both me and DH got it , but we took some pills and got well after only a day. I discovered a French med which is made out of wild duck liver and it's allowed in pregnancy . Actually it's good for getting imunity against viruses and it's used for babies treatment too.
Here's DS throwing a ball to a window of a room where DH was resting.

Adina: LOL at the show shots. I imagine your DH didn't appreciate the snowball on the window! LOL Interesting about the French med. for colds. We probably don't have it over here in the U.S. Our Food and Drug Administration requires years of testing before they approve any medication for our "market" over here, even if the medication has been used in Europe for a long time.
Kiska: it seems strange that you are "snowless" and we southerners are dealing with it--LOL pretty photo from last year, though.

The sun has come out here but since the high is only supposed to be about 20F today, I doubt if any of our snow will be melting.

20F with more snow falling. The Lake Effect snow warning has now been extended until Tues at 7:00pm. I shoveled the driveway and walks 3 times yesterday--the last time at 11:00pm. We had another 10" of snow this morning so I shoveled it again. It's getting hard to throw the snow up over the piles now. I'm heading out in a bit to get the parts I need to repair the snow blower.

kwanjin...Congratulations! Beautiful name!

kiska...Love that April 1'st photo. (especially the blue skies) I wish MY camera had a setting that could let it look forward in time! :-)

Winter is definitely taking a dip south this week! Brrrr... (I just came in from covering the most tender plants.) They've taken the S word out of our forecast for later in the week, though. Too bad... as long as it's going to be cold, it might as well snow!

We were going to get back to our regular homeschool routine today, but we ended up running a lot of errands instead. Tomorrow we're taking food to a friend who just had surgery. She has 6 kids, so we may end up hanging out there and letting her rest. But on Wednesday we WILL do homeschool!!!

kwanjin...You can paint just about anything. That doesn't mean everything looks good painted though. A former coworker liked to tell the story about getting in big trouble as a kid. It seems he decided to paint a live holstein cow. He claimed it really soaked up the paint and he had several gallons of white house paint on it by the time he quit. This guy was a real character and I have no doubt the story was true.

Bernie...that fireplace really looks impressive!

Ric...Well I certainly hope you got some more snow. Definitely looks like there is a shortage there!

Good morning!

It's another cold one here as well! 14F (-10C) (feels like 14F) !!! Don't see that every year around here ... now I'm starting to worry about the roses I didn't wrap up this fall ... Practically calm, slight breeze from NNE at 3 mph.

The girls started back at school this morning ... it went surprisingly well concidering we have been sleepin in until 11-12 for the past two weeks ... It'll be nice to get back into the routine, I really need to get back in the gym and pool!

EB - beautiful photo! That is a lot of snow to shovel ... I'd be exhausted too!

Celia - congratulations! Beautiful name! :-)

Bernie - that mantel is very impressive. Beautiful work :-)

Hi to everyone else!!

I took the girls on a walk up at the lake we often go to in the summertime yesterday ... we haven't been there during the winter months in years. The weather was the same yesterday although slightly warmer, around 20F I'd guess. It was after sunset when we got up there, after 4 pm, stayed until 5 when it was getting pretty dark and our toes were frozen! lol We took the sled along ... here's Selma pulling Hildur Eva and her friend who came along. It was their first time walking across a frozen lake if you can belive that!

Have a great day!

Mau, Have a safe trip home! I still haven't taken time to take pics of the fishes. Too many tests! ;D And we're getting ready to paint the floors...lots of cleaning!
Kelli, I hope that you aren't getting sick! :-O

Have a Great Day! :D

Hi guys! Super busy still. My alarm went off, I raised up in bed, and the power went out. So I took about the fastest hot shower I could so I wouldn't use all of the hot water, save some for Dave if he needs it, and muddled around while the sun came up so I could put my makeup on and brought my hair iron to work. Waiting for it to heat up and I'm going to dive in!

Kelli don't you dare catch a cold!

Sorry about the problems w/ the video.
I've unlocked it now so it should work.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rnranimals/4239696980/
Considering it's shot w/ an old analog camera I was surprised at the quality.

I'll start working w/ You Tube or one of the bulk places here soon.
I found two free sites to Convert and Edit the movies.
If anyone is interested DMail me.

18 here (WC 7) and lightly snowing.
Just the same big fluffy stuff we've been getting for the last 3 days.
e_b we 'might' have 1 1/2" now! lol!
Looks like our weather will turn around Sunday or so say the Weather Liars...
After a low of 8 Sunday morning temps will rise to near freezing...
then mid/upper 30's for early next week.

We haven't used the HT for a few days... it's just too costly to bring the temps up and down in this stuff.
It's currently on Economy 75.
The new doors on the enclosure are really working well.
The air temps stay bout 10 warmer in there than outside.
We probably will give it a shot tonight.

Kelli I already have a cold so your's won't be a problem.

My BIL has moved after 20 years in Tujunga.
Hopefully closer to his work in Oxnard.
He has a 50 mile, each way, commute that ranges from an hour in the mornings to up to 1 1/2 hours in the afternoon.

Here's a shot of Nandina domestica I took yesterday.
In our climate...lol!... it's evergreen.

Celia if you want to paint it then that's your prerogative obviously.
It's easy to do and will last a long time.
I just think the top and hearthstone are the wrong color.
In my mind I see dark.
Try temporarily covering them w/ black plastic and see if it doesn't change the look entirely.
We just have an aversion to painted rock or brick... that's our deal...
certainly not etched in stone for you...LOL!

An easy way to see the different looks whould be to 'shop' that photo.
You can play w/ different color looks and see what you like...

Ric - the video is great! :-) Looks like a great place to visit. edited to add : the title "skyfari" could be icelandic if you added a comma over the y (skfari) ... took me a while to figure out the english meaning ;-) lol (Skfari would mean someone who travels through the clouds ... sounds like something you could name an airplane ;-) lol )

It was really cold at the pool this morning! I just can't understand people who can use the outside lockerrooms/showers on days like today (never mind the ones who go swimming in the sea!) ... my feet practically froze just walking out to the pool (along with the rest of me) ... I was really shivering the first few laps ... the hot tub felt REALLY nice afterwards! lol

Another photo from yesterday ... "fuzzy" rocks from the frost :-)

Rann, that's some frost! I'm usually afraid of frozen lakes, but since you said it's so cold, I'm relieved about your girls sleighing over the frozen lake. Great pics!
Sharon, what a cute picture of your babies cuddling together!
Celia, congratulations for Crystal"s little baby girl! Such a beautiful name!
Ric, great picture , love those red berries! Loved the video too!
Mau, I guess it's good they don't allow meds to get there unless they are safe. I wish "ours" would do the same here !
E_B, lovely view of the river!
Crissy, such an unpleasant way to start the day! Our neighbor's allarm went on this morning and went off before the cops getting there and checking all windows and doors.

Now I'm at work second shift and feeling a bit bored. I made cinammon rolls in the morning for breakfast. Andreea and Ionut went to see "Avatar" and she took some rolls with her in case she gets hungry...which she does several times a day!LOL

About Transilvania and Dracula...just heard about a new movie they are shooting in Romania with Brad Pitt as Vlad Tepes, our ruler who was supposed to be Dracula.
Here are my doggies having breakfast.

Have a great day!

Do you visit Mountain Lake ?
If so, stop in sometime. I'm only a mile off Hwy # 60 south of the DNR place between Madelia & St. James. County Rd # 109 or 800th Ave.

Ran into a goof today. We had doors made for a replacement job. My son asked if there was a cabinet above the refrigerator. Somehow we made them 27" long instead of 13".
Only took him an hour & they were remodeled to right size.

I put a new table between the 2 table saws. The old one was slightly warped & caused boards to catch.

Heading out for supplies shortly. Need plywood & varnish. Menards has a bag sale. Anything that fits in the bag is 15% off. I don't know if I can fit that plywood in the bag!

Bernie: lovely mantel--is that in your house or somebody else's house? Is there room for a flat-screen TV over the mantel?
Pepper: it seems as if the whole country is in a deep freeze--except for where Kelli lives!
Marylyn: good luck with getting back into the homeschooling routine! I imagine the bunnies aren't all that eager, though. LOL
EB: love that close-up in the "old winter photo" of the pond or stream or whatever it was.
Rann: gorgeous photos--I love the pinkish-purple hue of the sunset! The girls look as if they were having a good time! :o))
Sharon: cute pic of the furbabies cuddling together.
Adina: even Brad Pitt couldn't entice me to watch any movie with Dracula in it!! Vampires are not "my cup of tea"! LOL
Rusty: I had to laugh about JuJu zooming back inside after going potty! LOL Yes, it's wise to just stay in the house and stay warm in this cold winter weather.
Celia: I think Ric had a good idea about putting black plastic down on the hearth to give you an idea of how a darker stone would look. You could also get some ideas of what to do to your fireplace by watching some of those decorating shows on HGTV--they are always changing the looks of fireplaces for not a lot of money--especially on Designed to Sell.
Kelli: I am so glad to know that you didn't have a cold. Lucky you--no cold(as in illness) and no cold (as in weather)!! LOL
Ric: nice photo of the nandina berries. I'm glad your fish seem to be okay in this cold weather. I'll check out the link again--going there now.

I had a beautiful, though cold, day for a drive down the mountain from my daughter's house. I made it home about 2:30 after a few stops--one for lunch and then I had to go have my blood drawn at the lab in Conway and then I spent some time in Hobby Lobby in Conway. Conway is about 35 miles from my house in Cabot but that is where my cardiologist is so that is where I go to have my blood drawn for my protime every month. I take a blood thinner and they keep a close eye on the thinness level of my blood. I have posted photos of my drive home(or part of it) on my web page at picasa if any of you are interested in looking at the Ozark Mountains with snow. Of course, as I have said before, we only got about 3 1/2 to 4 inches of snow in Harrison and only about an inch of snow in Cabot so that is certainly nothing compared to what some of you have on the ground. However, it is a lot of snow for us. :o))

Good morning!

Warmed up in a jiffy overnight ... up to 32F and rain drizzles this morning. So much for the winter wonderland ... it'll all turn to slush. I'm so glad we took the time to go out to the lake and enjoy it while it lasted :-)

Thanks everyone for your comments on the lake photos - we had a great time. And after we got home I made hot cocoa and waffles to warm us up ;-)

Yesterday was filled with drama over here ... the icesave fiasko is turning into the never ending story ... Parliament finally passed a bill on Dec. 30th to accept the deal made with Britain and Netherlands and our fool of a president announced yesterday that he decided to veto it and put it to a public vote. An incredibly irresponsible and frankly, stupid decision. Ask any person "do you want to accept back breaking debt (that you had no part in) that will take you the next 20-40 years to pay?" and they'll answer "heck, no!" ... this is not a matter that should be put in the hands of the people. I have absolute no faith that the general public will be able to figure out what's best for the country on a long term scale ... they'll just think "what will this mean for me?" ... we've been on hold for the entire year of 2009 because if this thing (no foreign loans or aid of any kind) and now it seems 2010 will be spent the same way. It's really getting exhausting to tell you the truth ... and a lot of people and businesses can't really wait any longer financially speaking.

To give you an idea what reality people here are facing, here's one sketch from the New Year's Eve comedy show:
A person is at the bank and the employee is explaining to him "no, you see, all your savings that you had invested in the old banks is gone ... you see, because they went bankrupt." The customer has this blank look of confusion and then asks: "What about the loans?" The bank employee answers, "oh, fortunately we were able to save those... but ofcourse they've doubled because of the currency drop" The customer, looking totally hopeless asks.. "how could this happen?!" and the employee answers, "well, you did buy a flatscreen TV" ...

Marilyn - great snow photos - beautiful landscape :-)

Kelli - glad you're feeling better!

Ric and Celia - LOL !

Here's another photo from the lake

Hope you all have a great day!

Rann yet again another beautiful shot!

Well obviously it's cold here too but it feels better knowing we are the same temps as down in AR...LOL!
You guys TRY to stay warm down there!
Looks like it will now be Monday/Tues before it breaks here.
Then we should be at our average 39...

Who'd have though Rann would have one of the highest temps here on the board...

Well the bad thing about having the Boardwalk and Deck is now we have to shovel it..lol!

Checked the pond and had to add a bit of water...
hose obviously is frozen so I hauled 10 two and a half gallon jugs out.
Looks like maybe 100 gallons are tied up in the ice that has formed.

We are getting snow tonight. 9.
Wind will pick up overnight so all schools in the area are closed tomorrow. Will be blizzard by morning. The snow is very fluffy. On the prairie with no wind breaks it will be a whiteout.
We stained & varnished the cabinet doors today. Got the ones for our bathroom done, too.
So tomorrow I get to sand them so we can give them the final coat. We will install them Saturday.

Sharon, I meant to tell you...your puppies & Calley look so contented there! Especially Miss Calley. ;) Glad all of your company is gone so you can be on here more! :D I noticed yesterday that you were almost as cold as us! Not good! We have ordered some coral, clams etc. from a company (ORA?) not far from you...talked to them yesterday & they said they were 40 inside the building!
Kiska, I've been meaning to ask you...When you are home & it's winter...do you have to set an alarm to get up? If it stayed dark in the winter for me I think I would...or I would stay in the bed all the time! :D
Marylyn! Cold enough to use the ice scraper? You wouldn't believe what I use! And I'm not the only one, either! We use wide spatulas here! :D I'm glad that the doggie found his home! :D
Adina, Great pics! as usual! :D Very pretty.
Celia, Do you have any snow on the ground?
Bernie, Hold on to your hat! I hope you can make it to the annual meeting!
Ric, How much snow will you get out of this one?
E_B, I showed every body at work your driveway...There were a lot of 'Wow's' & 'no wonder his back hurts!' Did you ever get your snow blower fixed? I hope you found the parts! When we had our big snow before Christmas we ( me & DH) were laughing wondering if Lowe's would deliver that Saturday! LOL!

Well, gotta run...

Well, the Weather Liars have struck again! Woke up at 6:30am to see what was going on and if the dream of an inclement weather day had come true, it rained in the middle of the night instead of ice and snow and the temp was 34*, that was the high for the day, it's down to 27* now and going to continue to drop throughout the day. Mississippi wasn't supposed to get much of anything, and they're getting hammered! Anyway, the roads had dried so no inclement weather day for me. Oh well.

Adina I'll admit I looked it up.
I watch a lot of my NFL football streaming on line.
The site I use runs a lot of European Soccer feeds and interviews w/ players.
I saw the word Trică last weekend on a Romanian feed.
At the time I thought it had something to do w/ one of those odd games you have.
Well not really odd ... obscure is a better word.
So I looked it up. Quite the player!
Your pup Trică has one of the best patterns I've ever seen!
I love that breed!

Well they are declaring a Snow Emergency here in many of the smaller towns and villages.
This just means you can't park on the streets to facilitate snow removal.

We are supposed to have bands of snow rolling thru.
Heavy at times then nothing all day long.
1-3" by evening...
By tomorrow morning they are saying 3-6".
It's been snowing since 9 AM but we only have 1/2" on the ground so far.
Temps right at 21 currently up tp 28 for a high.

The good news is the long range Lie calls for temps to be back to NORMAL by early next week.
Highs near or slightly above 40 Lows around 30...
YEAH!

I'll be going out tonight and getting the Holiday Light shots.
They always look better in the snow... LOL!

22F with little wind and light snow falling. We had light, misty freezing rain here from Tues. evening through most of last night. It never really built up on the trees but put a nice layer of frozen ice on top of the snow. The deep snow topped by a layer of ice means the wildlife is going to have a tough time of it for a while. We have another Lake Effect Snow Warning kicking in this afternoon and heavy heavy snow is expected, especially Friday to Saturday.

Joey...the snow blower is repaired and running like a top. When I replaced the cable I found that the friction wheel was worn down to nothing so I replaced that too. That fixed the problems it sometimes had with the tranny slipping. Nothing stops it now. I bought it used last spring from a coworker who wanted to buy a bigger one for his tractor so he could ride instead of walking. He bought a John Deere and the first time he used it the auger broke in half! The dealer told him they have been having a lot of problems with them--his wasn't the first. They are made in China. He got his $1,400 back and went out and bought another walk behind model. I think he wishes he had his old one back!

adinamiti...That is one cool looking dog! Maybe you have a future movie star in the family!

Ric...Vampire cows! Now that would leave a mark! Do birds eat the Nandina berries? They would certainly stand out in the winter landscape.

e_b they are mildly toxic and I've never seen birds eat them.
There are reports of the bigger birds, jays, mockingbirds, etc going after them.

We also grow Pyracantha 'Mohava' which has strikingly colored berries too.
They aren't edible until they have been frozen and thawed a few times.
Robins LOVE them!

About an inch so far and steadily coming down.
I went out and broomed it off... like powder!
The Boardwalk was covered again by the time I finished...lol!
It threw about 8" on the pond...good insulation and as it melts it will fill the pond back up.

Good afternoon! It's 40 here right now, but the temps are supposed to start dropping like a rock any second now. Unfortunately we didn't get any precipitation at all - we were hoping for snow (fun to play in!), but I would have settled happily for rain (to protect the plants.) Since we didn't get any, I'm going to run the sprinkler this afternoon. Then I'll cover the garden, and we'll see what survives! I don't have too many tropical plants, so I should be ok. I'm a little worried about the cyclamen I just bought, though...

John Deeres are made in China now, E_B?? That just seems so... wrong, somehow.. Sheesh.. I'm glad your friend got his money back. And I'm glad you got your snow blower fixed!!

Adina~I loved your winter photos; the puppies are cute and the markings are great.
Rusty~JuJu updates are great, too. Cleanup is such a chore. We no longer have a dog, but recall those days very well.
E_B I shudder at the thougth of critters falling out of trees in Florida. With no lizards/snakes in Alaska, it's pretty tame compared to that.
M2Keep~you mentioned earlier that it was a ways across the parking lot to the building you work in~is the parking lot icy? I seem to wake just before 6 no matter the season. It's now sunrise in Alaska shortly after 10am, so minutes of daylight are adding up already. We'll notice the gain, I'm sure.
This photo of our house was taken/emailed a few days ago. Luckily we don't use the front door. It's been hanging there, on the metal roof, for over a week. Snow/ice.

Good evening! I started this post this morning, but got sidetracked and didn't have time to finish it ... you've been pretty busy today and I don't have time to get caught up now so I'll just say hi! to everyone and get caught up tomorrow!

Yesterday was the last day of Christmas here (the 13th we call it - rettndinn). There are bonfires and people shoot some more fireworks ... kind of a mini - NYE ... we had a few things left so the girls and I went outside after dinner to light them. Then their dad came over with some more stuff ... so there was plenty for the girls :-) Had some hot cocoa when we came inside to warm up, so they went to bed WAY too late (after 11) ... I let them sleep in a while this morning, couldn't wake them up ... ;-) I wouldn't mind one of those no-school because of bad weather days ;-) lol

It's 34F degrees right now, light breeze from E at 3 mph. Had some slight rain drizzles on and off today ... partly cloudy.

Joey - I can answer that question for my part ... I have a hard time getting up WITH an alarm ... I'd sleep until noon without it. ;-)

Sharon - unbelievable how long this cold spell's lasted ... hope it's warming up! Reg. Icemess I know what you mean ... we don't know what to think or say either ... I really don't want to vote on this. On the bright side there have been some positive press coverage along with the bad ... there are voices saying that we should be treated fairly despite the fact that we're small, so maybe the President was on to something. I don't know. Hoping for the best anyway.

If anyone's interested in what all the hoopla's about and what we're up against here's an interview with our president on Newsnight (a British program) ... he actually did an excellent job against an incredibly rude interviewer so I'm not quite as upset with him after that ;-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID6sDekCGmY&feature=related

Have a good night!

Hi everyone. Well it's frigid here in northwestern Missouri and we are sitting on zero right now with a low of around 8 to 10 below expected tonight with high winds and dangerously cold wind chills way below zero. Our driveway keeps covering over with snow from the northerly wind and our Xmas decorations are still up and on since they seem to help the bleak weather outside look a little prettier gazing at the blowing and drifting snow from the inside. The kids have built a large snow fort much higher than the railing around our front porch. My oldest kids just returned and said there was a snow plow being pulled out along our county road we live off of!! Tomorrow night will be the coldest then temps will begin to inch up into the 20's around Monday. Schools and activities are cancelled from the brutal wind chills here and ongoing drifting snow on roadways. Guess I will loose myself in some new garden catalogs this evening and dream about spring time!! Talk later,

Hey Cuckoo!

It certainly is Winter eh! lol!

Kiska we had one of those on our metal garage roof.
Got some great pictures on one side... walked around and the other side let go just before I got there..
I'd have been buried! lol!
I heard there were Moose falling from the trees in AK!

Rann they look like little Mad Scientists! Excellent Shot!
I'm SO glad Christmas turned out so well for You and the Munchkins !!!!

My word a Sunrise! Nice Mau!

Well it looks like we got about 6" of snow out of the deal.
I went out and took some test shots of the lights about an hour ago.
Didn't fire everything up tonight.
The breeze and the lightness of the snow mad it a bit hard to shoot.
Either the lights were blowing or snow was getting on the lens.
Tomorrow night we'll both go out and do the whole yard.

Here's the trees across the Pond.

You are in rare form tonight, Ric! "Moose falling from the trees" and "mad scientists"! ROFLOL!!! Nice shot of the trees across the pond. Actually, it was a sunrise, though--not a sunset :o)) edited to add: we crossed--love the colors in those photos!!
Rann: I agree with Ric--that's a great shot of the girls.
Cuckoo: if the snowplows have to be pulled out of the snow, I would think that everybody needs to stay home!!!

Currently 18F on my back porch.
# Tonight: Mainly clear. Very cold. Low near 10F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.
# Tomorrow: A few passing clouds, otherwise generally sunny. Cold. High 23F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph.

Hey Cuckoo, long time no see.
You got any blackberry crisp on hand?
My blackberries are snuggled up under 3 feet of snow. Makes beautiful mulch.
(For you southern people, our ground was froze solid. Don't know how deep. Now with all the snow on it for near a month, it is thawed out again. So things that are touchy to cold will overwinter very well.)

I-90 is closed from Albert Lea, MN to Rapid City, SD. That is around 500 miles. Big storm.
All state highways from here west are closed. They are serious, too. $1000.00 fine plus pay to get rescued. They have gates similar to RR crossing gates they put down.

All schools are closed tomorrow also. Besides the snow & wind, the temperature is going very low. Wind is supposed to die down during the night, but I imagine it will take most of the day tomorrow to plow the roads.

We had to shovel snow off the house today. Getting a little to deep for comfort. One shed is getting pretty deep. If it is decent tomorrow we will get it cleaned.

We are in for a January thaw next week. I am keeping fingers crossed!

2 degrees now with windchills way below that. Winds are blowing hard still and there are cars in ditches everywhere. Several roads are closed including one we use to get to the interstate. That road has 5+ foot drifts on it. The interstates are so so depending on where you are at.

Windchill warnings in effect thru tomorrow and strong winds last til about noon tomorrow. We have about 5 inches of snow on top of what we already had.

Bernie, we're like where you live. All our ground is frozen, too.

Snowplows getting stuck? Yeah, stay home!

Great pics! I love the girls holding their sparklers. Rann, your pony shot needs to go into the contest this year.

Good morning!

It's mostly cloudy, 36F/2C (feels like 31F/-1C), breeze from E at 6 mph. With all the cold weather both in the US and Europe, I'm not complaining! lol The snow's still frozen for some reason so no slush yet ... which is good. We're expecting a depression tomorrow with wind and rain so it should melt then ...

Kiska - wow! That's some overhang ... wouldn't want that falling over me! Another chore I'm glad not to have to deal with ... clearing the roof of snow, Yikes!

EB - glad you could fix your snowblower ... snowblowers are unknown here ... even up north where it snows considerably more than down here in the southwest. (still around 20F up north and in the east).

Marsue - gorgeous sunrise! :-)

Adina - such a cute photo of the pups! Rica was very cute, like his brother :-)

Ric - your holiday light photos are great! I'm leaving the lights up until at least the end of January (except maybe the colored ones) ... January is just too dark and gloomy, definately needs a few lights to brighten it up.

I have a job interview next week! I'm fairly optimistic so keep your fingers crossed for me! :-) I desperately need the job, can't make ends meet on my disablity checks alone ... and December took a big bite out of my savings ...

Photo from the 13th ... not our fireworks ...

Have a good day!

Well it looks like after we get thru this weekend about everyone will be heading back up in temps.
Weather liars are saying low/mid 40's by Weds going out!
We will only hit 28 today... 20 tomorrow... BUT by Monday we should clear Freezing!
And sunny!
Snowing again here and 14. Big fluffy flakes still coming down.

Rann BEST of Luck on the Job!

Rusty I hope JuJu can get some serious yard time this weekend!
The faster you warm up... the faster we warm up! LOL!

Joey I love frozen bodies of water shots!
I have to try to get some over into our Cut In the Hill in KY.
It's part of the Cincinnati Arch and small springs leak out unnoticed most of the year.
Come winter they freeze and form huge icicles and frozen mini waterfalls.

42*F It's been pouring rain, but has now let up. Nearly noon here in Washington.
ric~the Christmas lights are beautiful in the snow.
Rann, leaving the lights seems like a great idea. Good luck w/job.
kwanjin~love the random shot.
m2keep~there have deadly consequences w/similiar snow/ice overhangs; as well as with icicles. If we were home, it would have been pulled down by now. Too bad the wind hasn't died down; sure makes a difference w/out it.
CG~great idea w/fines.
Rusty~hope the power stays on~love the photo.
DH at work at DD's here in Washington. There are a couple of acres to clear from around the house.

Bernie: wow--I don't kmow why anyone would even want to get out on the highways in that kind of weather but the fine should certainly be an incentive for people to stay at home even if the snow isn't!!
Rann: good luck on the job interview! That fireworks pic looks like a wierd flower of some kind.
Pepper: I lived in Kansas City(North) for about a year (My daughter was born up there.) but fortunately that year they did not have a bad winter--certainly nothing like you are experiencing this year!
Rusty: puppies are good at bothering older dogs--that's just what they do best--LOL. Good shot of the moon--looks like a true blue moon. :o))

"Hi" to the rest of you! :o))

It was 8*F at 6 a.m. on my backporch--wind chill was probably below zero.
Right now it is sunny but just 22*F on my backporch. No snow here but the temps will drop to around zero tonight!! Still bitterly cold in the entire country except for the desert southwest. I think I'll move to Phoenix or Tucson for the winter!! LOL

I took Friday to the vet this morning for his annual rabies shot, etc. He was not happy with me. LOL He's been asleep ever since we got home--guess those three shots traumatized him--poor little guy!

Kiska: we crossed--hope the ice overhang on your house doesn't get any worse. Do you have anyone who can take care of it for you while you are away? What would they do to "take care of it", anyway? Looks like the guys have their work cut out for them in clearing the area around your daughter's house.

marsue~sure sounds cold there; Friday has the right idea in sleeping through it and the shots' trauma.
Our grandson has gone to our house to dislodge the ice/overhang; he used the snow rake for that purpose; very long handle/w/solid surface "rake tines" for breaking ice/snow. We called him today; it went well even w/out dynamite:)
pepper~looking forward to snowy pics-always a favorite; unless it's summertime/flowers.

The best of luck Rann!!

LOL Celia!

Mau every time Tiga gets her shots she's lethargic for 2 days afterward, the third day is a little better, and she's fine on the 4th day.

Kiska Ric's right, you might need dynamite! LOL It is cold here, the high today was 19* with a wind chill of 15*. It's supposed to be 9* tonight, and we're not going to warm up until Monday. UG!!
