I still believe the best firewood is mesquite. Iron wood is undoubtedly the hottest but hard to find and extremely hard to cut and split.

DH used mesquite years and years ago and burned out the grout around the firebricks. It burns waaaaay too hot for a home fireplace. Lots of sparks too..
Cost a small fortune to rebuild our chimeny back for that *free* cord of mesquite.
