Crissy if Yall ride together down here then all you have as expenses is a part of the gas and your food AND what plants you buy at Forest Hill!!!! Bring your blanket and pillow and inflatable mattress. We'll make room!!!!
I`ll be there. If I had not potted up some things last year I would have lost plants to the armadillos. Those scoundrels dug all my bedding plants such as impatiens completely out. I need to figure out some way to trap them or put in fencing.
I have plenty of canna lilies and can start cuttings of some double rose of sharons.I have started raising some roses from seeds and plan to try and sprout some japanese maples from seeds. If I get enough seedlings from plants I`m starting I could bring some of those.
TY Jeri for being so gracious to allow us to put our camper right there in the middle of the action!! It'll be like right in the middle of the "night club".. cept no drinking... unless... SANDRA brings her "bottle" back...LOLOL... I have met Sandra.. hehe, and she knows I am baaad!!
TY for the warm sweet welcome.. I too love to be able to put the real name with the user name.. and then the face with the real name
WoooHOOOOOO RU Time - can't wait to see everyone again!! So glad you put this up Jeri!
Welcome Becky - you will LOVE this group!
Looked around the gardens this morning and was so depressed to see the condition of everything until I spotted my tulips and daffs poking their little heads up. I hope more come up and that they flower for me. I left these bulbs in the ground from last year. We'll see what happens.
My cousin gave me some poppy seeds a couple of months ago. She told me just to spread them on the ground in the flower bed, which I did. Now I can't remember which flower bed I put them in--LOL--so I surely hope I don't pull them up as weeds. My cousin did send me a photo of hers, which are already sprouting. I need to print it off and take it outside with me so I won't think they are weeds and pull them up. It's been too cold to even take a walk around my garden so if they are coming up, I wouldn't know it anyway. My daffodils are sprouting, though. I can see them out the window.
I had resolved not to ask for anything from any of y'all because, before this terrible weather, I really didn't need anything else. However, I will have to wait and see what comes back in the spring before I make any rash remarks about not needing any new plants!! :P I'm just mainly coming to the RU to see everyone and enjoy the fun and fellowship!
I am trying to get Becky to posting here on Mid South with all of us, she fits right in--lol
I guess I will come if Terrye will drive me there--lol--got a d-mail from her the other day wanting to know the dates, she is getting her schedule arranged so she will be off then.
Marilyn, we may all need lots of new plants after this cold, Cindy may not be the only one starting over !!!
Sandra, you know I will. Driving us around to the RUs is my second profession now!
Sure enough I had scheduled a class on that Thursday of Jeri's RU but I rearranged that one and one I had down on the friday of the Nashville show. I should know by now to check by Dave's RUs calendar before I schedule work! lol
It is warming up with all the talk AND talking about tulips and daffodills poking up there little heads already... I can't see anything but snow on my yard or beds...but there is the top eighth of an inch or so of tulips coming up in my windowboxes up against the house.
I am coming to Jeris R/u this year, if I have to hitchhike there
How are things going Sharon? Did Max get his disability? I've missed seeing you post on the threads and can't wait until the RU and get to see everyone again and meet the newbies that we have to initiate with all the left over plants(That is if anything survives this cold)!!!!
Max still has not heard anything on the Army disability ... we know it has been delivered to Fort Campbell, KY.. now waiting on a hearing date? It can take UP to a year to get a date..after that hearing it goes to Walter Reed in Washington, D.C. for another hearing and then they will put him out of Army, send him to the VA and then his VA disability will start ..hopefully!
We had hoped it would go faster than this , but it doesn't look like that is going to happen...but at least the process is moving (albeit slowly) to the next phase
Yeah , I hope I have plants left alive, too ... I am really worried about my tree roses...I did not bury them or wrap the trunks or anything ... we usually do not get cold enough to worry about that... I hope they are still alive, come spring
Jeri.. I wish all this warming up with the chatter would have been here at my house..lol... somehow the breaker tripped for the green house... on the coldest day of the year so far..lol... everything pretty much is mush... well.. I was wondering where in the world would I be able to start my seeds... now i won't have that problem..lol... hey.. the Lord does provide!!
Sandra.. I am lurking more..lol.. I really want to meet all of you
I wrapped my one and only tree rose with plumber's insulation--hope it survives because it is the only one left of 3 tree roses which Buddy had planted. I transplanted them all last year because where they were stayed too wet during the rainy season. Only the one has survived. It is a Sunsprite (yellow) tree rose and has a wonderful fragrance.
At least we are snow and ice free in my area of Arkansas. However, I saw that Kathy Ann posted somewhere that she still has an ice-covered driveway but she lives 40 miles north of me.
Cindy, I need to talk to some of the other Arkansas DGers and see who all is planning on coming to Jeri's RU. If there are enough of us planning to make the trip, we could "convoy" down to your place and pick you up. You would be more than welcome to ride with one of us, I know. Kathy Ann is "iffy" about coming and I haven't heard Kim say whether or not she can make it. Genna always has her kids' schedules to consider and I don't know if Charlotte or Debra are coming. We will just have to wait and see. If it is just me, then you are certainly more than welcome to ride with me. Maybe we could hook up with Sandra and Terrye and Sharon, etc., somewhere along the way. I'm sure we can all get together via dmail and work something out. :o))
My poinsettias are just now beginning to bloom. They are currently residing in my whirlpool tub (which I never use) under a glass block window which gives them plenty of light. The poinsettias and my African violets are the only things blooming around here just now. My Christmas cactus was loaded with blooms but it is past its peak now.
Not me--I know nothing about casinos-you will have to talk to Jeri and Mary and Lisa about that !
They are already telling us next week end is setting up for some kind of weather trouble on Sat, we may all be begging for plants before the round up--it may wind up just being a shopping trip to Forest Hills !!
Marilyn.. ty for your sympathy on the GH... I love the RU's cause I get a lil piece of each of you for my gardens, and in return I like for each of you to have a lil piece of me..lol... I think all is not lost, and we'll still have a great time trading
Sandra.. I know there's one in Kinder, but never been there.. never been to but one in my life... and found out real quick, I'd rather take my money to Walmart... it lasts longer.. IF you can believe that..lol
That would be neat to have a big RU. There`s room for sure and it is always fun. Even my husband has enjoyed chatting with the other DHs at the last few RUs. We came back home with the bed of the truck piled fuller with plants than when we came. :) Karen
Emily your daffs should be fine, mine are growing and we haven't gotten above 32* in about a week.
LOL Sandra if it doesn't warm up by May I think we all have problems.
Dave wants to start taking those vines out and building a veggie garden, except he doesn't know much. He can landscape a runway but isn't sure about a veggie garden. Looks like I'll have to tell him that we have to go. We're working on a budget right now, when I make 25K a year and he made 50k a year, and we lost that 50k income it makes a huge difference. He's going to go apply for unemployment this week and find out how much he's making for sure, then we'll know for sure. He won't carpool with anyone, he's one of those that has to stop at every rest stop and what-not. I sometimes get impatient because I can get in a car and drive for hours and hours. Lol We'll see...
Looks like a beautiful Spring day here this morning!!! We had a terrible thunderstorm and lots and lots of rain last night but woke up to bright sunshine and warm weather. But think it is supposed to turn colder tonight and be colder the rest of the week. Looking forward to Jeri's.
Me, too, Jeri! It was nice here yesterday morning so I took advantage of it and worked outside for a while. Everything here is wet, wet, wet, and mushy--including the plants. :o(( I hope they don't get root rot! However, the sedums seem to be doing great and I noticed that there are some green leaves coming out on the Hot Lips salvia. Amazing, considering the time of year it is. Now I just hope that we don't have a hard freeze to kill off all that tender vegetation.
We are supposed to have a possibility of some frozen precipitation on Friday :o((
If I don't stop hibernating soon, I am going to be as fat as a bear! Unlike bears, when I am stuck inside, I make my way to the pantry or the fridge too many times a day!
Hi, Don't know if anyone remembers me. I've made plans to come to two reunions and both times had to postpone plans. So this time, I'm not coming! Nope,I'm not coming! However what if i should just show up? Just If,mind you! Just If?
Anyone mind if i just kinda lurk around? LOL
Jeri the cocoa tree you gave me is still living!!! All the old leaves fell off and it is trying to put out new leaves but they just want come on out!!! So been doing some research on how to grow. I decided to put a clear plastic bag over the pot to create some humidity. Hope that helps!!! Really want to keep it alive and get it to growing!!
Good going Charlotte!! Mine are in the covered area by Mary's and that entire area got way too cold. I'm not sure if anything will come back or not. I'm just sick over it!!!! I believe I have lost things that I have had for years. But I'm waiting to see green start to pop on anything.
I have some stuff in my little mini greenhouses that don't look good at all. They got too cold too. Some I know is gone. My big pencil plant looks OK on the top but there are a lot of branches that are black! Not sure what will happen.
I've got black spot on some of the plants I'm keeping in the garage, thought that was kinda weird, they looked fine before they went in. My problem is I forgot to water my plants that are in the garage!! Stowed them away and I guess I thought everything would go dormant, even though it never freezes in the garage! Dang! Hopefully they will come back.
I look forward to the round-up this year, Jeri! The only thing is that I may have lots of plants to just "give away." The children and I will be moving to a rental house in June. Don't know how much outside gardening I will be able to do once I move. I'm digging my most precious plants and taking them to my sister's yard. I know I still want to attract hummers and butterflies, so will try to do that with hanging baskets and large planters. Can grow some of my roses on trellises in big pots, but once again, since I don't yet have a rental house, I won't know until later.
In the meantime, I'll start making a list of things I'll have.
Wow - glad I double checked the date... I just about scheduled something else that weekend!! Thank goodness I have not committed yet... don't want to miss this get together - been waiting since last Spring!
Jeff has still not committed to joining me on this trip. I probably will not come if he does not join me. I want to stop at a few of the casinos that I heard about at the Fall RU in AR...and stop at a few other nurseries. This would most likely be a 3-4 day trip. I will let you know when I know ;o)
LOL I have already reminded him of all the wonderful food that we bring to RUs...he agreed but that was it ;o) I got him to Terrye's by promising a 4-wheeler ride, which he really enjoyed. If we can just come up with something that good again. However, he has already said he does not want to lug the 4-wheeler to LA :o(
Hey Kim we have 4 wheelers. They are sissy colors like red and yellow. He can ride them. We have a bull next door that I have watched grow up from a baby that loves to chase especially the red one if he needs added excitement. LOL!!!!
Tell Jeff the red one is a TRX250EX8 and the yellow one(mine) is a TRX420TE8. I'm sure he could manage to get into enough trouble with one of those for just a few days. If he likes to hunt I'll introduce him to Charles(my cousin that lives next door).
I'm ready to Karen!!! I've had enough of the inside!!!! I saw yesterday that my clematis is starting to sprout out new leaves. By Cortana Mall the purple magnolias in the alee are in full bloom. I'll try to get by there and get a picture. It is a breath-taking sight.
I'll have to get by and take a picture of that sight for Yall!!! Truly pretty!!!
I was truly disappointed today not to make it in the yard but had a few surprises crop up that prevented all of my plans for the day. Terrie came over after work tonight and we attacked this dirty house so I have the whole day tomorrow to may it in the yard. Sure hope I recoup some of my energy.
I can't wait for Yall to make it down for the RU. It won't be long now!!!
I have a bluebird althea, too, but I thought Ruth gave it to me--maybe it was you, Mary. I'm not sure if it has made it through the winter. There aren't any green leaves on it yet but it is still early. Hope it makes it.
Charlotte, the azaleas you gave me are looking good. I wanted to ask you about that fern--I think it is a sword fern or something like that--you said it was hardy but it has turned brown and looks dead. Will it come back from the roots?
The butterfly bushes which Kathy Ann gave me are looking good and have green leaves on them.
Several of my plants are putting out green leaves: the Blue Fortune Agastache, Red Fox Veronica, the red gaillardia which Sandra gave me, the bee balms and some others. I sure hope we don't have a late frost like we did in April, 2008. All the plants were coming out and some were even getting ready to bloom then, BAM--they all were nipped in the bud and had to start over. :o((
Marilyn the foliage on the fern dies back in the winter, but it will come back from the roots. It's pretty hardy so it should come back. It's too early for it to be coming out now. My bluebird althea doesn't have any leaves on it but the the plant itself is green so I know it is going to make it. I'm seeing some stuff starting to come up also.
I went back outside yesterday afternoon and checked the label on the bluebird althea. It was from Mary(busybee) and not from Ruth. I am just leaving the fern as is and will wait till later to see if it puts out green leaves. We still have several weeks to go before things really start coming out. The forsythia that Debra gave me is putting out buds and hopefully will be blooming soon. I have crocus coming up but they aren't blooming yet, nor are the daffodils. Everything seems to be a little bit later this year--must be because of the colder winter we have had.
Marilyn none of my fern is putting out any fronds. I don't see any green. It will be several weeks or more before they green up. I did some work in the yard yesterday and pulled a lot of the pine needles off the flower bed and discovered my toad lily is coming up and lots of other stuff breaking through the ground. I have a lot of stuff that want come up until late April.
Hi Jeri and everyone. I just wanted to say Spring has definitely sprung. A sure sign of Spring here besides the tractors humming, and the early flowers are the Motor cycle riders that have their Spring ride through here every year. About 300 bikers went through Sunday soooo it is official Spring has sprung. Hope you guys have a great time at your RU. In the mean time here is a colorful pic of Spring around here for you. shirleyt
Jeri things were rough around here. We lost my husband, everybody's Paw Paw, in October. I have a lot of alone time now. Cannot wait until I can get the coleus going. I think I lost my confederate roses this time. We are borderline for them. I am sure I have lost some things I have had for years. They were just too heavy for me to move. I am not as strong as I used to be. Post us a great garden tour when thinks are at peak. I love to tour your space. I caught the post you did of the beginnings of your garden and ck back to see how it is doing every season. I have been looking at your vacation pics again. What a trip. Fun Fun Fun. Have a great season. shirleyt
Shirley I am so sorry to hear about your DH!!!! I know he fought a long and valiant fight. Are you doing better now? Time allows adjustment to the scar that you now bear from your loss. It will never go away but it will become less painful.
Yes, Lilylove(Kim) has seriously brought up old memories by reviving that old thread. I would love to go back but DH made me throw our luggage away after the return from that trip. He said if we couldn't go in our motorhome we couldn't go. The wheels actually fell off most of the new samsonite luggage and Jim ended up dragging it without them.
Yes I'm trying to get things shaped up for the RU. Good reason to straighten things up. LOL!!!
Hi gang! How's everyone doing? Sounds like you're all excited about the RU.
We have a new member interested in attending a RU. (I dmailed her an invitation last year) Not sure she wants to travel to LA but I've encouraged her to drop in and say hello. Her name is pinkspoonbill (Cathy) and she lives here in Little Rock. Since I'm not as active on DG as I used to be I encouraged her to contact Charlotte, Kim, Marilyn, or Kathy since you are in the area and ALWAYS know what's going on! She doesn't see her DG messages very often - I will dmail you her direct email address if anyone wants it.
Shirley, I can certainly empathize with you about the loss of your DH because my DH went home to be with the Lord in Nov., 2008. You will get through this but it sure helps to have family and friends you can count on. I don't know what I would have done without the loving support of my family and friends nearby and even the wonderful way those here on DG supported me and are still supporting me. My internet friends here on DG are great!
Hi, Debra! Good to see you posting. Just thought I would let you know that those two clematis you gave me at the RU last fall are doing great. One of them even has two blooms on it already! Here's a pic for you. Do you have the name of this one?
Gosh, Marilyn ... most of my clematis are either dark purple or pink/white combo. That one looks like a pale purple? I'll have to see if I can find the tag for you. Your lavenders are putting out little green leaves. I guess they did survive but it may take them a while to fully recover from the bushwhacking I gave them.
Sending Cathy's email to those who requested it ...
