| We came from here:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1061926/
Well its the middle of January. C'mon in and take a peak.. its not too messy in here but things are either dead or dormant as far as plants go. I have a pile of containers from last year with the last seasons annuals in them and some perennials here too. Soon I will be starting to clean off the plants and begin to water them to see what might spring back to life in here.
I like that, the very words "spring back". Isnt it what we are waiting for, the reserection of a new season. Well, reality check, we still probably have a ways yet to go with the winter hoe-hums.
In the meantime, while Im peaking in on things here for the rest of the month, I am still hard at it marking the calender with planting and sowing dates and getting things organized for the garden in my journaling.
Been peaking at catalogs and drooling over the new plants out there that I would love to have too.
So what are you doing this time of year? Is your potting bench getting in order?

| Well, here they are again... dead and dormant!
My pansys still have a little green, but they are frozen. There is a dianthus that is actually greenand looks to be growing. The rest is pretty mych dead as far as the petunias, marigolds, allysums and other annuals, and the perenials, yep, very dormant.

| Zzzz...*snark*...zz...z..zz...UH?...Wha?..I'm up...I'm up.
Well,my pipes finally thawed yesterday and I was able to get my seed trays watered bur pipes were busting all over the yard so Hub's was busy repairing all that mess.
Today's garden club meeting here at the house so I'll be busy with that today.
I got my heat mat and grow light out of the lean-to,set up on the kitchen table so I can WS some of my new seeds.
Weathers warming back up but rain in the forecast so I still can't play out in the yard...Danggit! |

I have not been outside yet today, but not likely I will have anything to do in the GPS yet. |

| Was outside in the GPS today. Looks like the pansys could still have life. Everything in there is pretty dry. Dare I put some to water? Ahhh the great debate.
Found my snips though so took a brief hike to through the nursery and snipped some apple and forsythia branches for cutting.
Looks like the garden has a lot of damages. As mild as this winter really has been, the ice storm of the previous year is still showing its ugly head. |

Ok, well, I was a futzing aroung in here today, found me my MIlky Spore applicator and got out and did the front yard. The gophers turned it into a mine field and Im putting the Spores down to kill the grubs they are eating so maybe after the spore starts working the gophers will go nextdoor!

| Just came in from GH. It's COLD out there. If it's gonna get 58,it needs to come on.
Variegated hops and nicotiana Smoked Chocolate are up...even in this deep freeze, something pops up almost daily. Fancy aquilgeia are putzing along. Only a few Roman Bronze,Single Black and Chocolate Soldier are up while seeds I collected 2-3 yrs ago from my Towers Light Blue are coming up like gangbusters which leads me to wonder how these seed vendors store their seeds.
I have a large zip lock baggies crammed full of annuals to sow if the darn pots and inserts would just get here. |

Bumped up trays of rose campion Hutchinson's Cream, rudbeckia Red Spot, Round-headed rampions, digitalis Cafe Cream and d.virdiflora and put them out side along with a tray of giant callas I bumped up last fall. All pansies and violas went on an outside bench yesterday and I moved stuff around but I still don't have near enough room inside to even start the petunias, vinca and impatiens...DAG!
Tomatoes, peppers and herbs are ready to start going outside for short periods each day until they're ready(and weather is ready)for those to go to the greenhouse. |

Gotta clean my new iris bed and plant some pansies or violas at their feet...mow...rake...weed...play in the dirt before that rain moves in. | finally got a picture of the creeping veronica but picture does not show the true BRILLIANT blue the blooms are. I just planted it last year from a deep 4" perennial pot and it has grown to apx. 12"x18-24" and just smothered in blooms.
I generally like to take pictures on cloudy days so I don't get glare off the lighter colors and colors are richer but the veronica doesn't open on cloudy days.

Just wanted you to know I really like the GPS
IT helps me to know when to plant things when I see someone in the same zone doing the garden thing.
This has inspired me to do a garden journal (of sorts)
called Life in the garden.
Just wanted you to know YOU are the source of inspiration.
Thanks

| Another disappointment. That new foxglove seed vendors were raving about Candy Mountain. I planted out 4"seedlings last fall and 1 gal. blooming plants in April and this is the best they've done. Certainly NOT what the catalogs pictured.Mark them off my list of foxgloves for my yard again

| now this is more like it...Elsie Kelsey(white) and NOID set out as 4"seedlings last year same time as 4" Candy Mt. Both are 3 1/2 to 4 Ft. tall were as C.Mt only a foot to foot and half tall at best

| saw some awesome foxgloves at Leos, but HOLY KRIPES.. not paying that for them... $14.95 was a wee bit outrageous.
Just put my four o clock seed to the cutting garden.. what comes comes. I might be sorry I did that.. owell...
Hope I can get the maters, cukes, loofs, peppers and begonias to a bigger por before Tuesday.

| $14.95!!!!!!! Geesh, were they made of gold? I generally only do foxgloves in 4" @ $2.50-$3.00 a pot for market. I don't like to do any biennals in 1 gallons already in bloom. |

| Ye-ah it tis...
Well anyway, its sunny today.. dare I move my vegs back to the GPS? We dint get the frost that was talked up on but it did get bloody cold.
Im losing coleus left and right and my impatiens cuttings bit it to.. Hopefully Iwill save enough plants to make more cuttings later, but Im up aganst a tough schedule in just to water lately. My new coleus seedlings are doing ok, just the old parent plants from last year are starting to die.
Gardening this year has been a real challenge.
I should be sending you your varigaters in the next few weeks.. just waiting on the postage...moneys tight right now, but its comeing... not just when you want it though!
Will let ya know when its mailed though.

| Ya gotta be freaking kidding me! I have foxglove Anne Redzsky(sp?) in 4 inch deep perennial pots for only $3.00!!! I won't sell biennals in one gallon in full bloom.
People around here sqawk at $14.00 for a huge 2 gallon hydrangea in full bloom...but they'll go to a fancy garden center in next big town over and give $18.00 for an 8" pot with 4 stems. I just tell these folks"Bye,sorry I couldn't help you" |

| Well, this place is up north .. I got to be wondering what the heck those people do for a living, because if you charged a third of what they were asking they would say bye bye down here. Key-ripes!
Like I said, its eye candy for me, I wont pay that. Bad enough I paid what I did for veggies this year.. but had no choice if I wanted them since Im having a rough go taking care of things this year.
I just cannot understand the price flucuation... but then we live in povertyville here and even the lower prices are sky high.
I wonder how much they end up dumping... |

| I've done very well with my oddball annuals this year so far. Hot Chocolate and Chocolate Smoke nicotiana were selling w/o blooms last week and really well this week in bloom. Lonas aka yellow ageratum is moving well w/o blooms also. Dianthus in bloom..not so good, not even the yellow ones. One gallon red penstemons and variegated joe pyeweed doing good but not the red potentilla. I never know from year to year what will sell and what will just sit.
I'm pushing gompherna, coleus, impatiens, vinca and livingstone daisy to take next Sat. Herb sales are still good...sold out so far on basils and dill.Re-sowed some more dill to come out in time for veggie vendors cucumber stock that should be coming good in a couple weeks. Lavender was fairly good size so they did ok. Lot of folks lost their rosemarys this past winter due to teen tempts so I'm hoping my big ones will be ready for next Sat. |

| Sounds like a plan to me!
Coming home today I passed the local hardware... $1.99 on hanging baskets.. now go figure. Granted, not as nice as the $40 ones at Al's but throw some fertilizer in them and they would be!...Them biguns up at Al's.. be on the waining side by the time you get them home youd have ta prune them...
Just like those foxgloves.. shoot, that big in the store...you get them home and they start going down hill.. I would be afraid to repot and lose the seed value on them suckers.
Same on the delphs. But oh so pretty. |
