I just got back from Maui and saw this ginger species blooming all over the island. What kind is it? And would it bloom at this time in zone 9a if given some frost protection?

We were given some on a tour of a flower farm and was able to take it back home. They showed a little wear from the plane ride home, but are still in decent shape. It would be great if I can grow some here and have it bloom in January. All my Hedyciums have all died back from the frost, but they are out in the open, away from the house.

I think it is Alpinia purpurata and seems to be very popular in HI.

It blooms on last years growth so if you can keep it from freezing back you are in good shape.

If I can find some for sale in the local nurseries, I will give it a try. The big question will be if any of the local nurseries will even stock them.
