Hey all.. Hope you are had a great weekend..Things were busy here..Lots of running around, but not alot of work accomplished...Wow only 49 days left till spring... Time is flying by already...I have 29 containers winter sown.. Some are smaller containers for seeds that I only had a few of each.. I have sprouts up in several of them..I think I need to move them where they dont get such full sun as they do on the South side of the house.. Thats the only place they are hidden from view tho..I want to put them up on the deck but i can hear Dh complaining already, so I guess until it gets really hot I wont worry about them to much..I need to get some more soil, there is so many other things I want to get started...Its supposed to be warmer tomorrow so maybe I can get started on cleaning out a flower bed up front to add my babies to and start planning to add a few more..DH will love to hear that im sure. lol Im going to look you guys up on facebook.. I dont know much about using that site tho..I'm just now learning to use this one.. Trish

Jar - nice article - the only thing I noticed is you did not mention ventilation. Either leaving the cap off or cutting holes at the top of container. Great job! Who do you write for?

Mornin' everyone - still no work for me today. The side roads are so bad here Mike says I have no business out in the big truck. I'll show him, I think I will go to Lowes and Atwoods today. (Atwoods is our local farm and ranch store.) I need a new bird feeder and a "few" other things. That ought to get me in trouble.

Really looking forward to spring - can't wait to have things growing outside!!

Everyone have a great day!

HI Everyone
Robin I'm Margaret Tucker on facebook but I'll go write on your wall and let you know for sure who I am.
Mary just copy Robin's email address she posted and paste it into search box after you login on FB and it will bring her up for you.
Jar that was a good article you wrote.
Checked on my trays this afternoon after not checking them since Friday afternoon and found one foxglove and one cosmos has sprouted for me. Sowed all my dianthus seeds today and left them out there under plastic. Was going to sow all my geraniums too but the dirt is froze solid pout. These are all in my plant room with just one heat lamp going to keep things from freezing to death.
Rides got my needles in the mail today a whole day earlier than I epected but I'm busy reading a good book so maybe tomorrow I'll make my mittens the correct size. Or maybe I'll wait on those and make the hat first I need it worse than the mittens.

Other than that lets all just have fun, and dont waste your time worrying over every lil thing ..Worry over the big things and just enjoy what ever time you can find to spend with us here..This is my worry free zone .. "1, 2, skip a few 100! did I do it momma?" So in response...I am counting as fast as I legally can!!!!!!!! but you know, if you get a heat lamp and some halogen lights...add a few grains of sand...a CD with the ocean playing in the background...you could fake it for a couple of days! Come to think of it that's what I should be doing right now, building a CAGE to grow my greenie beanies in...the wee little bunnies always like to have their litters right in the middle of my veggie garden and they eat almost as much as the groudhogs do.

Just passing through on my way to the (stock) market. Had to show off my "Christmas" Amaryllis, which like me is running a little late. It has a beautiful apple blossum color so rare to see any kind of flowers this time of year. I'm doing some germination tests on all sorts of seeds. I've got some Scarlet Runner (magic beans) along with several of last years tomato seeds ready to go if anybody wants them. I'll type up a list tomarrow.

The Amaryllis bulb I grew this year came from a garden specialty shop. It was huge, about grapefruit size when I bought it. Actually grew two stems and total of eight blossums, a real beauty.

Okay TOMATO LOVERS, here's my stash, all in small packs of 20+ seeds each. You Southern Girls can have first choice since you're likely to start planting them soon, but there's plenty for everybody, that is if you're nice to me. I'm also starting some "New Yorker" (Gramp's favorite) tomatoes as plants ready around May 1st for transplant, but that will come later.

Tomato seeds available now:

Bush Beefsteak (5)
Earliana (2)
Jubilee Orange (1)
Roma VF (7)
Rutgers Jersey (8)
Starfire Improved (6)
Trip-L-Crop (1)

Contact my D-Mail if you need any of these, I'll send them right out!

Al

It was not, but I never know. donkeys can be mighty contrary.
My Farrier and I are getting them better with every trim.
Their hooves are doing better with every trip. He says when he gets them right I shouldn't have to have them trimmed but every three month, they will trim theirselves down. Now, Charley, he is a mule and Half horse so we need to see him every 8 weeks or so.
But Charley is an easy job. If I get out there and tie them up before he gets here. There is no problem

RRM - thought you had all mules. I have just one horse now, but I suppose I should discuss her on another forum, I'm not too sure about all of this yet.

I am going to root some more common pussy willows as soon as I notice buds swelling if anyone wants some let me know. I think they make such a nicely shaped bush, but they can take up some space. Next time I take a walk around the lake I will take a pic of my favorite to share with you all. The deer rubbed it when it was little and it seperated in the middle to make a little sitting area, so nice to sit there and gaze at the water!

KCS ,
I have pussy willows too they are easy to trade and send. You dont have to wait for the pussy fott to show. If you can identify them they will root easily in a jar of water!! Just snip wrap the ends with a moist paper towel and a few wraps of a baggieor I like the good saran wrap I cant think of the name of it. Then pack it up and ship it out. I keep a jar of it all simmer rooting as it is a willow and helps other plants to take root!! Just like my willow tree cuttings great stuff!!

Yep, she's for holding grocery bags and is my second one have one more to make and next one is going to have a cherry red dress white apron and arms and I'm debating on adding blue trim for a red white and blue one. Be soooo happy to get the third one done I find the pattern boring but it was an order I'm getting paid for sooo I'm gritting my teeth and making them.

Mornin' all! Rotten baby off to daycare so grandma can get something done today. Semi blew a head gasket yesterday so I am off until Monday.

Snowing here again this am 33 outside so maybe it wont stick - last weeks snow hasn't all melted yet. We sure needed the moisture, the wheat around here was looking sickly but holy cow, did we have to get it all at one time.

Who has pussy willow? I would really like to have one of those. We had one when I was little - living next door to Mrs. Edwards - I would spend hours out there "petting" the tree. Occasionally, when mom wasn't looking, I would pluck one or two of the nubs to play with. That was the coolest tree!

My poor WS containers are burried in the snow - hope they like it cold.

Gotta paint the rest of the bathroom today - about tired of working in there!

littlenettie to answer your question about the peonies you don't want to transplant them until late Sept or early Oct. They are very chosy about things and if you aren't careful you will lose them. They are also very hard to dig if they have been in the ground for any length of time. Just little buggers.

Goodmorning all.. beautiful horse and very handsome young man there kc_mom, and the garden shot is nice too...Funny to see just your hat floating above the tree limbs..

Mindy the doll bag holder is darling..You ladies sure are talented...

I would love to have a cutting from one of those pussy willow tree also when the weather gets a lil warmer and one of you ladies can get to yours...Ive been thinking of ordering me one and a weeping willow tree also...I see they have a gold w/willow tree now I bet that thing is pretty also..They say the weeping willow is easy to start also.. I just need to find one on the side ofthe road, I'll get a piece of it and see...

Endi sorry your semi messed up but maybe a few days off will be good for you(not money wise i understand)..Hope you get your painting all done..I bet those WS containers are loving that snow..When spring comes I bet they are full of sprouts..

Nettie I think you need to make you one of the Mrs Edward dolls like Endi is creating for the neighbors..Raise the dress up over one corner of its buttocks and put a big set of red lips prints on it..I might even be tempted to put a "Kiss This" sign under it.. lol to bad I dont have any neighbors to fix up...

Its raining here today ughh..I guess I could be cleaning house but that really sounds like no fun to me...Im out of potting soil so I cant make any more WS containers till I go to town tomorrow..DH is working 12 hour graveyard shift tonight so I have to be quiet(means no house work),I cant cook because the smell of food wakes him right up..I guess I'll be forced to just sit here and play online most of the day, if the clouds and the rain dont interfere with my internet connection..Hope you all have a wonderful day..

HI Everyone
Nope Loca it's not the $$$ that's talking it's the reason the lady wants the darn things. They have a gift shop at an old mill that was used in the one of the wars (Battle of Mill Springs) all the money they make there goes to keep the old mill in mint condition and running. You can buy stone ground cornmeal there when they are open and watch them grind the meal at certain times.
May I ask for some pussy willow and the corkscrew willow pretty please.
Yep, Robin Flower can crochet up a storm she's just getting back into it since I been showing all that stuff here even has her sister doing it just as much.

Got up off my duff and took a walk around the lake. Kind of gloomy,(go figure) but the fresh air was nice. Saw a cock pheasant but of course the camera had shut itself off by then so no pic, have to get a real camera again soon.
Here's the pic of my sitting spot pussy willow, this is the baby, must be 20' tall.
The deer have been redesigning it again, you may be able to see the rubbings.
The following pic will be the footprint of who I assume has been decorating the shrub.

arejay - I guess the people who are "into" caves are called spelunkers. They like to check out rock formations, evolution of cave dwelling fish and animals, and how the caves were made by the passage of water over time. The coolest thing I've ever heard about caves is that there are fish who have evolved out of using eyesight because they don't ever see any light. I read this in a novel so I'm not sure if it's true, take it with a grain of salt. :) I read this story when I was 12 so...?
Some people come to the caves to pan for gold & semi-precious gems.

I prefer the outside world myself.

blondhavmofun - I used to make macrame' plant hangers too, have fun with it!

The opt out feature is for when it was owned by Networks or whatever their name was. This is not IB that you are opting out of. And to opt out, you have to lower your security level on your internet options to enable cookies. Once you opt out, then raise your security level back up. The safest way to do this is by closing every window that is open, lowering your security level, opting out, and then raising your security level back up to normal. Then you can safely open any new windows without the threat of spam or other things attacking your computer.

Some of us were upset because our screen names, and placement on Dave's Garden, were somehow picked up by Google. Since I use the same screen name on several different sites, they will all easily cross reference in Google. I'm told that you can sort out the information you want seen or hidden and make changes but I'm not quite into that just yet. You can check yours and see for yourself.

Hi All, Have a huge request for all my friends. A friend of mine in ID has a daughter that is missing. If all could just pray for her please, and keep an eye out for the girls, I would be very grateful. Here is the info:
AMBER ALERT!! Missing 2 15 year old girls, Hispanic and Native American, missing from Firth Idaho since Feb. 4, 2010. Both approximately 5'9", slim build, dark hair and eyes. May be hitchhiking by semi truck. Please pass along to all your truck driver friends and all those of you on the road. If seen, please call Bingham County Sheriff's Office at 208-479-2607 or 208-785-1234.

Jazz, my friends daughter, was last seen wearing a turquoise sweater, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes. The 2 girls took no food, money, or extra clothes with them. My friend, Lea, of course, is worried sick. Lea was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2006, and is divorced from Jazz's father. Jazz has had a hard time with everything since then. She was staying with her father, and they had a huge fight, and she left. She is a very lost and confused girl right now. Please, just keep an eye out for them and keep them in your prayers. Thanks!

hi all

hey kcs, where in florida did you live? all my other orchids didnt do to good i was surprized they bloomed.

hey jar, thanks

hey skellog, well all my prayers for a safe return are with your friend please get a picture.

i have to tell you all about my wonderful day, it started at 2 00 this morning when the neighbors dog woke me barking(outside my bedroom window) all the rest of the night i wanted to kill him, then 530 am got a phone call, this guy my husband has been trying to get a job with called and wanted him to come to work. yippee finally,, well got on the highway and my spare tire ripped the tread off and no cell phone to call for help, and to drive 20 mile an hour home to get a new tire, luckily we had a truck with the same tires (brand new ones at that) only that they have been sitting on the truck for 4 years lol, they were still good, now for the good part, DH thought he lost his chance, called and the man said come on out, well, we get going again and on the same bridge, same spot the other tire pops, well, 2 tires down, luckily his brother was going by the opposite direction to pick him up(he took the keys with him too), my son and i sat there for over an hour just laughing, then our road rangers(for those who dont have them they come help out the helpless on the side of the road, change a tire give gas what ever) stopped, and my DH came with 2 tires, he pulled them out of my sisterinlaws truck and one rolled right into the drainage ditch LOL i had to pee sooooo bad i almost went in my pants. we got back on the road and a little ways down we heard what sounded like another flat tire, phew, just the first tire tore the plastic up and it got stuck on the tire, oh my gosh, well, i took my son to work (and they didnt have his pay check and wont have it until tuesday, how they could have everyone elses and not his hmmm this company is going down hill.
so needless to say he quit. which sucks for him, i kinda dont blame him since this is the second time they have done this too him). well, left him at work to go pick up the DH, and on the way to get him at 330 traffic sucked an emergency came over the radio tornados in his area, and i am 30 plus minutes away, i get there and he had been waiting for over and hour in the rain LOL
so if you think you have had a bad day, mine really was bad until on the way home i decided to stop for dinner since i didnt have time to eat, this buffet, oh my goodness i was in heaven, they had shrimp of all types, coconut, fried, steamed, buttered you name it, crab legs, roast, salad bar to no end, oysters in the half shell, steamed clams, mussels, and was only 9 a person i was in heaven never ate sooo much.
i know it is alot to read but i thought you all might need a good laugh cause that is all i could do

skellog - What joyful news to start the day! Soooo happy they are safe! Also hoping that someone makes sure that they are scared enough to never run again! I ran when I was a kid, had a very bad experience, perish the thought of any other innocents going through what I did!

Ah, a fresh new day - not pretty, just fresh I guess. Gloomy and 34 here - baby home, daddy gone to quiz bowl meet out of town - lucky gma - home alone with 1 year old. Bet I get a lot done today - keeping baby out of dog food, cat poop and all other goodies is a full time job. LOL I love him but dang babies are a lot of work - I really think I would rather dig a hole! God must know what He is doing, giving me this little one to look after - but dang, don't He ealize I am old?

My black eyed susan vines are still lookin good - hope they don't take over the bathroom before April 15! Oh, and I have one cinnamon vine coming up, finally - thought I had killed them for sure. Now if the silly begonias will come up I will be in good shape. I only got two Lupines out of 25 to sprout in the house so far. Is that normal, are they hard to start or did I mess something up?

Gotta go, baby is on the loose and the dog is a horrible babysitter.

You heard jar, ladies. Only 42 days. Right. I'll be happy if we see spring here in 42 days, but I really think it will be closer to 82 days! lol We tend to look at Ground hog's Day a little different here. When they say 6 more weeks of winter, we get ecstatic, hoping it ends in 6 weeks, rather than being sad because it won't end for 6 weeks! lol

hi all,

great news skellogg, hope they got a good scare and wont think of that again..

hey loca, guess what i have in my garden hmmmmm, well i worked in it all day raking the leaves, which was a loosing battle since we are having mighty strong winds and leaves fall as fast as i rake them, anyways a bunch of grape orchids are coming up they all have blooms so i will have to wait, but i will send you a couple.

my garden looks bare i cut everything out and raked even though you cant tell, will rake again next week and plant some things then.
i am exhausted, thanks to my son he did most of the cutting and picking up i just raked and pulled some weeds,

Hope you all are having a great day. Sprinkling in the desert - yeah! Drove to Mesa today to visit a fellow DGer and her beautiful yard. Getting ideas for my own - lol. She and her DH are really talented with concrete and faux rock - it's amazing. If you all are on the other site she has a crafty site - it will be cool!

Have a great day...I preset the coffee pot so it should be done brewing and nice and hot when you all wake up. Fresh fruit cut up in the fridge for you all too...

My subscription is up in May. I plan on renewing. I enjoy talking to everyone here. I can talk in lots of places some more hectic than others. The resources are here for my interest in Gardening. I will be sending seeds in for Newbies just like always. Newbies will come here and it's fun and rewarding to help them get started. I won't be discussing my business here there are other sites for that. Just quiet relaxing chit chat about two of my favorite subjects, you and gardening.

Enjoy the superbowl! I'm off and waiting. LOL

Are we to keep our conversations here strictly for gardening? I get off topic ALOT! I garden around my life, kinda all goes together for me. Today the baby ate his first sphagnum moss - I just hope there isn't some wierd fungus on it! This spring it will be dog poop and dirt so guess he better get used to it! Gardening is hard on babies but he is gonna have to be out there.

Has anyone tried growing potatoes in a trash bag? I have some of those really big, tough contractor bags and wondered how they would do.

Lori - You can grow potatoes in just about anything big enough to hold them. The problem would be finding bags strong enough to hold the soil for any length of time before breaking. I've grown them in 5 gallon plastic recycle pails as a 4H project and also half wine barrels with great success. Would think that any fairly large container would work fine. Like any large plant they have to be kept well watered. Maybe you could double or triple up the bags to make them stronger.

This is a picture of an artichoke flower. I grew several in Calif. mostly for the flowers. But I usually ate 1 or 2 of the larger artichokes. The artichoke that you eat is actually the bud of the flower. They do not like cold. But I did grow one in Bakersfield, which can get down in the teens some winters. I had it in a protected area so it did well.
