We came from http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1069600/ and are starting a new thread as the last one was getting pretty long.

Here's my backyard a week ago after the snow storm ---- which finally melted away today, just in time for tonight's snow...

I used the Topaz plug-ins with Photoshop (topazlabs.com/). I can't remember which filter it was now. I think maybe it was Topaz Clean. I spazzed out the settings and came up with that.

Here's another one I used Topaz on, but just to fine-tune it. I reduced the noise and then manually did some more noise reduction. The moon was so pretty this afternoon. I couldn't believe the craters actually showed up in My photo.

Mcash70, I am so glad digital cameras got invented! People sometimes tell me what a good photographer I am and I think, if only you knew how many I took to get that one good one! Nap, you are doing a great job restoring the photos. That is a project that I have wanted to undertake for several winters. I just restore a photo as I want to use it. But I have all of my parents old photos, all of my photos from the 60s & 70s that I want to scan and keep. Just not enough time in the day, I need to retire :), if only I could.

Mary isn't it wonderful to hear the birds sing, I have scads of house finches at my feeder today. I had to go out once and pick it up after the darn squirrel knocked it down.

TA, that photo looks great! This is far more subtle.

Here is another of my photos using Tinti.

The filter I used on that moon shot (actually, two) are from Topaz. First the Adjust, and then the Vivacity Clean, with iterations in the advanced tab set up to 5 or 6 (can't remember off the top of my head).

And I was surprised to even be able to SEE the moon last night! I sure won't tonight!

Jubilada, I especially like the hyacinth also.

I'm going to check out the Topaz filter again, I went to their web site when I was reading the older posts but did not download it. It looks like a worthwhile plug-in.

Edaleputt, the Topaz filters are worth trying, because they do offer 30-day free fully functioning trials. Personally, I decided on the Adjust, Detail, ReMask and Vivacity. I didn't do the bundle, and as a consequence spent a little more, but ... I'm satisfied. Also, the documentation they provide is quite good, and there seems to be a lot of on-line support.

Lily, I used Topaz Adjust and Clean (Stylized setting) and some of the Photoshop enhancements around the edges. Like Jubilada, I highly recommend downloading the free trials and seeing which one(s) you like best. They really are easy to use and the results are like nothing else I've tried. Not sure which ones I'll end up purchasing.

Lily, I did use a Topaz filter -- maybe two. I can't remember which ones I used now, after trying so many on it! I had to do some noise reduction because I cropped it down so much the graininess showed and I probably used one of the Adjust filters to bring out the colors and contrast. I think I may have used something in the Vivacity group to sharpen it a bit, too. The swirled edges were done with Photoshop (Filter>Distort>Liquify).

Beautiful Daff Miss Mary!

Edaleputt, nice work. I also like that yellow plant ... and those cute little bugs ...

The Vivacity preview isn't all that wonderful, depending on what you're using and what adjustment levels you have. It will show up the most severe alterations pretty well ... however, if you've got a large image and are not pushing the "clear" or "sharpen" filters to the max, you might not see much of a change.

I usually drop my image down from my camera's 48x36 inch size (at 72 dpi) to 3 or 4 inches at 300 dpi, before using Vivacity.

The other thing that might be of help is, when you downloaded the trial version, Topaz also provided a very good user's manual, and there are three examples of stretching the "sharpen" and "clean" filters at the end of it, with specifics on what settings they used. Hope this helps!

Beautiful Daffodil! All we have is mud and dirty snow, we lost lots of snow over the past few days, now of course we have flood warnings. I can't wait to see some green.

I checked that box but the preview still does not show, that is what made me wonder if you had to purchase it 1st. I will look again.

The yellow flower is goldenrod, it blooms in the fall and is always covered with bees and other buggies.

Here is another one I did, I like the other ones better.

It's gift wrap. The kind that has the hologram patterns on it that change colors when moved. I laid it out on the kitchen counter and lit it with the overhead halogen lights.

I added some lens flare to this one.

Lovely Daffies Mary... this photo was taken a couple of years ago.

It is finally finally spring like here in Iowa, all our snow is gone, I have never seen snow melt so fast as it did this year.

Thanks Mary, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I just came in from outside, there are several things popping their little heads out of the ground.

This photo I used the Tinti plug in and then a couple of the Topaz.

Yes, Edaleputt, Francisco and Consuelo are two of my four kitties. The others are Lupita and Phoebe (feral sisters rescued by the Stanford Feral Cat Project and put up for adoption--of course my vet neglected to tell me that they were feral kitties initially, so I was surprised when I got them home. No matter, they're perfectly well-behaved little ladies now).

Really nice. Jubilada, I would be interested in seeing a step-by-step series of photos starting with an original and ending with one of those lovely works, such as the iris above. If you would ever consider doing that one day, I know I (for one) would find it enlightening.

Early_Bloomer, color is nice, no matter which season produced it! My Daffies are this year's crop and are currently blooming.

Lily, the Bleeding Hearts are so very pretty and I like the way you've presented them.

I have a few things beginning to pop out now and will hopefully be able to move on to something besides Spirea and Daffs soon! (But I'm having such fun with those...!)

Jubilada, love the Iris, Daf and the borage, borage is such a beautiful blue, I have some pictures of mine, I will have to find them.

Here is one I did last night, it is really abstract, I'm not sure if someone would know what it is, it is a Hibiscus taken last summer.

Miss Mary and Edaleputt, your flowers are simply lovely!

Miss Mary, for what it's worth, here's a side by side of the Iris. Don't think there's much of a revelation there. Subtle change, not much more ... is there more you wanted to know? I think that you all are using the Topaz filters to great result, so anything I may have to offer is actually of no consequence ..

Jubi, that subtle change was well-made and really made the photo dance. Your works come up with a better-defined edge than mine seem to. I know you use a variety of filters on each photo, depending on the needs. In the case of the Iris photo, do you recall what effects and filters you used to get from the original to the finished product? I thought I might learn something that I'm overlooking now.

Yes, Miss Mary ... here goes. The original image (from my camera) was 48 x 36 inches, 72 dpi. At that size I applied the Topaz Adjust Version 4 preset "Recovery--Shadow" filter. Then I reduced the size of the image to 3 x 2.25 inches, 300 dpi, and applied the Topaz Vivacity Clean filter with these paramaters: in the Main Tab, the default Threshold (4), Clean Radius (4), and Sharpness (1) levels; in the Advanced Tab: Sharpness Radius 2.18, Line Accent .91, Iterations 3; in RGB Adjustment Tab: R Threshold 1.49, B Threshold 1.72. I played with the numbers before actually settling on these, but there you have it. Bonne chance!
