Morning all! Goodness, no camera, no power, all kinds of things some are doing without! I don't have a very good camera, but would still be lost without it! And no power throws everything off! But, hard to cook and clean without it, so not all bad, teehee!
Anybody have any great ideas for vines, preferably flowering, for shade in zone 4? Need something to climb a couple of trellis just off the patio, and would love an idea or two. It's pretty protected, other than the dogs walking thru, but they don't get too close to the trellis wall, so should be safe from them.

Nice pictures ladies. Sorry about the power outage up there. Ours does that at times, but usually only with the winter snow or ice storms or when it's cold as the north pole and I have a greenhouse operating on power. That is when OURS goes off. Sun was hot already at 7:00am this morning. Needless to say, I'm hugging the air again today. Suppose to be around 88 today plus humidity.
Had 2 water lilie blooms this morning on a different plant, thought I'd take a picture of them. The fish thought I was coming to feed them, so had to do that too.

Nice pictures Mekos and arejay. It's supposed to be in the mid 90's today with high humidity so I don't know what I'll be doing outside today. Glad the power is back on for you arejay. Sorry about your camera huney. I would be so lost without mine. I don't know if you have a Best Buy near you but they usually have good prices on HP cameras. Or there's always WalMart.

Well, my in-laws will be here tonight. They are moving here from OR to be near us just up the street. We bought a couple of places for them to stay (near Joe) where they could have super cheap rent and have more money to live on. They haven't rented in years and years so it will be different for them but we keep telling them to treat it like it's their own. It will be nice to have them so close to us.
Have to go over and mop the floors and finish cleaning up the place and mow the lawn. Then I need to get back here and do my floors and bathrooms and then take Courtney to sing tonight. So I have lots to do today. You can see that I am still sitting here typing away about nothing at all so you must guess that I am procrastinating! lol Have a good day everyone ;-)

Thanks everyone! I love my fish and my gardenia bushes. I have about 5-6 right now in ground huge and smelling so nice. My mail lady came today and could smell them all the way to the road so I gave her the last 2 bushes I had rooted in a pot, they were blooming too. She gave me white butterfly ginger last fall along with a couple other people and I have several popped up and looking good. My gloriosa lilies have buds on them and sure hope I get blooms soon.
Nice pink Arejay. I have the white blooms on mine and one with white blooms and dark purple leaves.

I forgot to put the names in there, I found the paper with plant names right after I got back from the postoffice, but the ground orchid was in the seperate box. It blooms white. The other container had hibiscus of several different kinds and colors and some cocks comb thingys, I'll find the name for you because I can't pronounce it. Celosea or something like that, in pink orange and reds and yellows. And I hope they live for you, I have pots full of all that. Show us pictures of blooms if they do survive , when they grow and make flowers. IF THEY DON"T LIVE, it sure won't be your fault, it would be me not packing good. BUT I will be happy to replace any that might not make it. You just enjoy them. Actually , I forgot what all I did put in your box. Well, we can help ID them for you when they bloom. LOL big embarrassing smile!?!

Loca, I have a friend who lives in Hawaii and for this summer he is staying in Arizona and sure not enjoying your hot weather. He's looking for a Vanuatu plant for me. It's a black hawaiian ti plant. He is like a bloodhound when you need to find something.
He got me some blue gingers for Christmas. They are looking good. I sure hope they bloom this year. Might multiply too for next year. ☻

This is for ALL you Iris lovers! We have a new game to play. It's called (drum roll please...) NAME THE IRIS

Mitt is an IRIS grower and hybridizer. He grows some of the most beautiful Irises in the USA.
He has pollinated a couple new ones and they have big beautiful seed pods on them almost ready to pick and grow a baby from. The special thing about this is NOT ONLY DO YOU WIN THE SEED POD, BUT YOU GET TO NAME THE IRIS WHEN IT BLOOMS. It will be eligible to be registered and named by you as the owner of your very own IRIS.
Now How cool is that to have your very own plant to carry the name you choose. NO ONE else will have one like it.
Imagine being the parent of a pod baby!

Here is the link to see the parents of the pod.
The first pod was formed as a cross between MONSOON MOON (pod parent) and CHINESE WHISPER (pollen parent)

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/168284/

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/153597/

This is a link to the web site to show you about registration and how to go about it.
http://www.irises.org/registration.htm

The second pod is a cross between Coffee Trader ( pod parent ) and Temple Of Time (pollen parent )

Link to see Temple Of Time Iris-
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/97188/

Coffee Trader--
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/142477/

Now what happens is you play this game, you win the pod, you plant the seeds, you grow the Iris and then you name the iris for real. You register the Iris as your very own.
Now look at the parent Irises and think what the baby plant would look like in your mind and what would YOU like to name that Bloom. What name do you think it would look like?
So NOW go ahead and start picking names for (POSSIBLY) YOUR BABY IRIS!

THIS is the LINK to go to for CHATTING. http://cubits.org/MEKOSGAMES/thread/view/26068/#new_post

Lets keep this thread clear just for the names you choose for the seed pods.
You may post as many names as you like and GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Probably just needs water and shade. I may be stressed out from the move and just needs a little time to settle. Seems it did that when I first got it. But soon it was green and blooming. Don't worry, it will be ok. I keep it where it can get full morning sun and shade from hot evening sun. I actually kept it in a pot because I was afraid I would forget where I put it and it would die. But it is pretty hardy and strong little thing.
Some of the other plants are hibiscus, and different colore and one is a texas hibiscus. It has finger like leaves and not sure if it is white or red but sure is pretty. Looks a little like wacky weed growing.
Then there was a few celosea plants, different colors. Those are colored at the tops. And a few other things but I always forget till I see the pictures of them. When they get hydrated good, they will start growing good again and you take a picture and I'll help you get names for them.
They should be ok in a few days but if not, I'll send you another.

It's a Female Eastern Hercules Beetle.. The male has horns.. They're the largest beetle and completely harmless.. we went and showed her to my in-laws and then released her back outside near the woods.

No squash bugs for me! I found out what was/is getting in my garden.. not rabbits.. but an armadillo! He keeps making holes under potato stalks.. I'm assuming he's munching on new potatoes.. We spotted him about 500 yards up the road alive and kicking and then I realized it had to be him. The "drag" marks match his body and the little holes match his nose. uh huh.. now what do I do? He was gone for about 5 days and has been back the last couple of days. They are usually roadkill when you see them out here. I know they are nocturnal and it had rained hard all night the night before, maybe that's why he was out during the day.

What I know about Irises, the only way to get the exact same plant as the parent is to divide the rhizome when it makes new fans. If it's the same as Daylilies with the seeds, they do not come true to the parent plant even if it was fertilized with it's own pollen. Hopefully Mit will chime in for sure since he hybridized them;o) I cut my bloom stalks off after they are done so no seeds for me;o(

Sometimes if the bees pollinate them they wont have any seeds or it will be a low seed count, is what I have read.. I couldnt bare seeing all that she had loved all her life to still be here and her not. SILLY HUH !!! But im back into my plants now . So thanks for having me here .

Hi, All. While I've been using Dave's Garden for years for plant info, and have even posted many pictures from my own gardens, I have never participated in the forums. Decided this morning that I'd go ahead an get involved with you all, if you think you can stand me! I participated for years in another garden forum, but it seems to be breathing it's last.

I've been gardening here in Central Alabama about 24 years ago, though didn't call myself a gardener for the first 5 or so years. I had so many different gardens ... full sun, part sun, dappled shade, deep shade. I was on a forested mountain ridge and it seemed I had the best of everything. DH and I got tired of dealing with all the leaves, etc. We built a new home in a new subdivision and moved in fall of 2007. This is my 3rd gardening season here and I'm still working on improving the soil. Not only was the top soil the builder brought in the worst you ever saw, it was placed on top of rocky hard subsoil. It was very tricky to create well-drained beds, but I'm beginning to make friends with it all.

Daylilies are at the top of my favorite bloomers, and I'm obscessed about deadheading every morning so that when I take pictures there are no spent blooms. The neighbors here in my new neighborhood have gotten used to seeing me every morning running around with a bucket in one hand and my camera in the other. They just shake their heads, say "Bless her heart!" and go on.

Sorry for the long post. Did I mention that I'm a little "wordy"? The first daylily I every purchased and planted was the Red Volunteer. It is still my favorite and I'll bet I've divided it at least a dozen times, and photographed it hundreds!

Good to meet you Bradysnana and blumz...Love the red lily, mine is just budding out. I take the same picture of the same fower sometimes several times a day...they look different in the morning ,noon and night. Right?
I think my surprise lily surprised me and died. It got log and green leaves then immediately started to die back It was so pretty good thing I got pictures last year!!
Oh ny the way the chatty...you would get lost in here if you weren't chatty!!

Doesn't the surprise lily do that? The leaves die back and then it surprises you with a bloom stalk later on in summer?

This is the exterior built right into the stone face of the Sedona Mesa. Pretty extraordinary construction work in my mind. Awesome scenery all through Arizona.

Okay - I've got you all guessing now. The structure actually sits on a spire in front of the mesa wall. There is a parking lot and steep ramp walkway entrance in the rear of the building! It was a beautiful sight overlooking the Sedona Valley.
