i so love this: both the video and this new 2010 version. question: did you plant the tomatoes directly into the hay bales or did you "core" them out to create space for soil? or were all the veggies, including tomatoes, planted directly into the bales? thanks for the great idea!

mellogardener, The tomatoes were planted directly into the hay bales with a little garden soil, manure, and leaf compost mix, to tuck the seedlings into place. Sometimes a bale may not be as ready as I like, so I use a knife or keyhole saw to hack out a chunk of the bale to plant in.

Check out the DG Strawbale Gardening forum (if you haven't already):

The folks are very helpful and supportive for this fun and efficient method of gardening.

    Thanks for reading and commenting!
    Have fun gardening this season,
    Bev
