One of my favorite dahlias has been my Caribbean Fantasy because of the beautiful colors that are always different. This year they are completely unlike the last two years?. Some plants are yellow and some are the burgandy color. Completely plain with no hint of another color. They are also very small and bushy with lots of flowers, blooming early.. What can I expect? Should they grow taller, get better colors? I have one that looks normal in size and form but it hasn't shown color yet.

This is this year's. Notice how very small and bushy the plant is.

Is there any possibility at all that tags could have been switched? Your third and fourth photos don't resemble the flowers in your first and second posts at all - not to me, anyhow.

I know. That is my problem. The colors are the same as the mix in the old Caribbean Fantasy. If you say it can't happen; I will have to say that I did indeed mix tags. DH insisted that I did and I told him "no way". They act like my border dahlias in size and bushyness but I can't give in to saying I messed up. I didn't even keep the border dahlias in the same area as the regular ones!

I'm not saying it can't happen. It might have to do with unstable genes for all I know.

In any event I'll take your side.

Blame it on winter genetics.

I looove that first bloom! I've never seen it look like that-such vivid variation! If it was guaranteed to look like that, I would order it again. Had it last year and it didn't do well as a plant, then when it did bloom, was very muted. Lost it to rot. So pretty! You should add that photo to plant files, in case anyone ever gets a bloom like that. And what hot pink number is to the lower left of it?
