I am a "lurker" on this thread and thought I'd share my latest "recycle" project.
Old, vintage/retro suitcases made into pet beds. Has anyone seen these or is this old news ? Maybe I am just slow and just now seeing these.

Anyway, here are a few that I made. 2 given to family members and 2 sold.

Thank you all ! I went out yesterday shopping for old suitcases and they are not that easy to find that are "cheap". I know some people make tables out of them, so they prices have already been driven up a bit.
I wish I had the time to frequent yard sales. I love doing that, but you need to go early and I work.

Bonnie the beds are just too cute!! What a clever idea. I was going to ask the same question - how do you make the wooden legs? I actually have an old Samsonite suitcase from the 60'ties in my attic. My parents gave it to me as a gift and I've kept it all these years. I need to figure out something to do with it.

Cool idea. My poor Sam is 12 yrs old now and can no longer hop onto my bed (thankfully) due to arthritis. He has been sleeping on the leather couch. I'd love to make him a suitcase bed, but I'd need a biiiiiiig one--he's nearly 100 lbs. I think I'll hunt for one at yard sales or maybe someone on Freecycle has an old one to get rid of for free.

I'd like to know how to attach legs to it too. I have some nice ornate short legs from an old piece of furniture that would be perfect. For a big dog, do you line the inside with plywood or 2 x 4's? How do you make it?

I think I'd use a twin comforter for the mattress so I could toss it in the washer regularly. Or maybe I'd make a leather pillow so it would feel cool to him. He has 4 inch hair and is always hot, even though I try to keep the temp down to 70.

What a great idea you have there!

Well, I don't make the legs. If I could, that would help on the expense of making the beds. I get them at Home Depot, Lowes, anywhere I can find them. If you notice, all 4 sets of legs are different. I hate doing anything twice, so it has been a challenge in finding different ones. Right now - I just completed the 5th set and they are like the ones on the small blue suitcase, pic #3.

Charlotte - that is exactly what you need to do with that suitcase! - It is probably similar to the little red one above. You know they are selling those types of suitcases at antique stores for around $20. With your litle puppies, you could use the smaller sizes too.

Picture of the one I am working on now. I buy the suitcase first, then hunt for the quilted pillow shams, then find the legs that I want, and paint them to match the sham. If I was a quick seamstress and could make the pillow coverings, it would save alot of money too, but then - it would increase the time I have in them, and I don't have alot of free time.

Thanks NancyAnn. I know what you mean about them wanting to stay cool. My "pupper" likes the coolest spot when she comes in, but when it comes to sleeping, she likes the cushions ! lol. They are spoiled aren't they ?

I found a couple large suitcases yesterday at an antique store - luckily 1 was only for $5 because the top was damaged- well, on that one, I don't need the top.
My DH just separates the top from the bottom and buffs out any sharp metal things that may interfere. On ones like the red and blue one above, I can only use the bottom parts, but the brown leather ones like pic 1 & 2, I they are equally as deep as the other side, so I got 2 beds out of 1 suitcase. I don't have to line or do anything to the inside of them, because they are already done. It is amazing that there are so many suitcases out there - that still look so good on the inside. Of course, only the ones I am interested in are the "hard shelled" ones.

As for attaching the legs, the legs I have bought come with a large screw in the center of them, but I remove that one and we drill 2 holes thru each and put a large washer to hold it. It is very sturdy that way and less likely to bust or pot off.

You reminded me Nancy Ann - we did stop on the side of the road the other day where someone was throwing out some old furniture and I jumped out and unscrewed a set of the feet off of one of the chairs. That will really save on the expense when I use those feet - even though it may be a little more work to finishing them. Those "bun" feet are quite high to buy new (like around $8 a piece). So I was thrilled to get them. I just don't know how I will paint them other than a solid color maybe. Will really have to be crafty on those.

Thanks for the instructions Bonnie! When I had my antique store I always looked for old hard shell suitcases. Stacked they make great chair side tables. They always sold quickly. It seems to be harder to find things at garage sales now than it used to be. I haven't been in a long time because I'll end up bringing more stuff home and I need to get rid of stuff rather than buy more.

Bonnie, have you considered getting some of the staircase posts or banister posts they sell at Lowes? You could actually cut them into several sections for feet. I think they're around 3 or 4 ft tall, so if you're making 6" ft, a 3ft post would make 6 feet. Buy 4 matching posts and you can cut 6 sets of matching feet from them (24 ft total). Would that save you some $$?

It might be cheaper to hit yard sales and buy old tables and stuff to strip of their feet. And don't forget freecycle. People are always eager to have someone haul off their "junk".

Would love to see more of your suitcases as you make them.

No - but that is a great idea NA ! I will check them the next time I go on my "leg" quest. On the smaller suitcases, I like using the smaller in diameter legs, but I feel like the larger suitcases, I should use a more massive leg (like deck post/endcaps,etc), and maybe even 5 (one for the center) if it is a really big suitcase. I really wouldn't think anyone would want a really big one, if for any reason but because of the space it would take up in a room.

Oh, yes, there's a freecycle in Memphis and probably a freesharing too. Hold on a minute and let me find them for you.

    Here's your Memphis Freecycle:

    http://groups.freecycle.org/MemphisTNAreaFreecycle/posts/all

Anyone can go to http://www.freecycle.org and plug in your city and find a group near you. If there isn't one near you, request to start your own local group.

    The Memphis Freesharing group is:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SharingIsGiving-Memphis_TN/

Anyone can go to http://www.freesharing.org/directory.php and plug your city in the search the directory box and find one near you. Again, if there isn't one near you, request permission to start your own. I started a Jonesboro Freesharing group using Yahoo's free groups.

I also joined Freecycle groups in surrounding areas so if I'm going to be travelling thru that area, I can see if there are any freebies there I might want.

With both Freesharing and Freecycle, everything is FREE--no strings attached, no buying, selling or trading. The purpose of both sites is to keep city landfills free of useable items for as long as possible. So people offer things they no longer want and you can request them. The offerer will select someone to receive the item, so if you don't get a response, you'll know you weren't selected. For some items, people may be get 25 or more responses; for other items, you may be the only one who asks for it.

I got a free rubbermaid compost bin from freecycle. I've given away lots of plants, food, clothes, and things on both groups. My brother had an UGLY old ancient gas cookstove. This thing is probably an antique. He had it in a rent house and decided to upgrade the house and put in a nice new cookstove. The old one had issues, but the top worked. A guy drove 40 miles to get this free UGLY stove. He emailed me about 4 times within the next year to tell me how much he appreciated the stove. He took it home, cleaned it up, replaced some parts and enjoyed many meals his wife cooked for him on that ugly old stove. We were grateful that he saved us a trip to the dump.

On both sites, you can request items too. You'd post something like "WANTED: Old, hardback suitcases--any size". With both groups though, I think your first post must be an offer. So if you have a bag of old clothes you were going to donate to Goodwill, you could offer them, and then post your "wanted" post. Each site should have a list of rules somewhere. The moderators enforce the rules and may put you on probation if you violate them, but they're pretty easy to follow.

Some of the groups even have meetings once a week or once a month where you can meet as a group in local park and exchange the items you've posted. At these meetings, people often bring other extras that maybe they haven't had time to list and you're usually free to take what you want.

Hope I haven't hijacked your thread. Just wanted to give you some background info so you'll know what it is before you sign up. Both sites are wonderful and different people use each one, so you double your audience by using both sites. There are probably some other sites just outside Memphis as well. Just plug your city into the search bar and see all the sites it returns. You can join as many as you like.

Hope this helps! I'm all for promoting talent.

Thanks for the info. NA. After posting that question, I googled it a little and found a link, but I think the ones you are giving me are better than where I ended up. lol.

Darkmoon - the method I use to making something look old or antiq'ie may not be proper, but I will share with you my method. I buy the cheap little .99 acrylics at Hobby Lobby. First I paint about 2-3 coats of a dark brown and make sure it is dried real good. Wait about 24 hrs. Then I take a paraphin (sp?) block - purchased at Hobby Lobby too - but I am sure you can use a simple votive candle and scrape across it where i may want the old rubbed look to show up once done. The purpose of this will make sense in the last step. Then I put adequate coats of the regular colors on top of the brown. Last step is the antiq'g. I use this (another purchase from Hobby Lobby - lol) - a little jar of antiq'g and paint all over the top of the colors, making sure I get in the groves real good. Then rub like heck with a cloth! When you rub over the areas where you hit it with the waxy stuff, it will rub down to the brown areas. Then, I spray with a non-yellowing sealer. Tah-dah ! Hope that makes a little sense. I am sure there are other ways, but that is how I've always known to do it. Very in-expensive when you can get those little bottles at H.L. for .99 on the weeks they have them on special. I am sure you can order them on ebay or other hobby sites too.

I don't use a mattress - I only use a $4.50 pillow from Target. I am sure it flatens out eventually - but that is easily replaced by whoever gets the bed.

Forgot to answer your other question darkroom, about the shams I buy. No, I shop frequently at Marshalls, TJMaxx, etc. They sell them individually in the cases they came in - "new". So far, that is where I have found them - usually around $12.99 -unless they are on the clearance rack - then they can be $5-10.

I originally got my idea from another "handmade" website that sells hers for $60. At first, I thought hers were high, but after I put everything into mine - I usually have around $50 in mine. However, hers don't have the multicolored legs, nor a quilted pillow sham. She would certainly make alot more off of hers than I do mine. :-(

Thanks Charlotte ! Funny how different ones, you like better. My fav. is the first one and the small blue one. My DH loved the "Molly" one too. If I know the name of the pet getting the bed - I make a name tag for it. I just got thru making the name tag for the red/black&white one. If you notice, the one for Molly, didn't have the original handle - the other 1/2 of the suitcase got the handle, so I had to make knobs for it. Therefore, I did the tag a little different.

Most of the tags, I try to keep the "vintage" look, with alot of distressed stamping, etc., but the one I did tonite, the "owner" is not a "vintage" type person, so I did it more to match the case - retro with the white ball fringe on the end. lol.

I used to sew a lot - made decorative pillows - and always looking for stuff to recover chairs. I had collected tons of fabric and hated to just throw it away. I tried selling some of it on ebay and it turned out to be just too much trouble for what I got out of it. I finally ended up donating it to a threate in town that has a summer program for kids. The kids make their own costumes and props.
I still have a roll of that poly in my attic. It's been there for 12 or so years and one of these days I'll have a need for it. I do still have a bunch of bags of fill and some pillow forms I had forgotten about until you all mentioned them.

I just went out in a quest to Hancocks and they weren't open, so I went next door to TJMaxx. Got a brainstorm while there - bought large towels to make the pillow covers out of for the 2 large cases. I really want something that is very "washable" and what is better than a towel? The ends are already done, so I will make them like a normal pillow cover, and just make the insert separate.

I love it so much , it goes with me on all trips .I repaired the cover and if I remember right , it was folded over three times . Nothing ignorant about asking that question Julie. Well, the first 2 my DH did use some kind of industrial glue. I don't like using it, so on the rest we are drilling 2 holes thru the suitcase into the legs using washers. The legs come with a middle screw, but we take it out and toss it. I feel 2 screws in each leg makes them more durable. Does that make sense? If I had one at that stage, I'd post a picture, but I don't at the moment. I have 1 ready - but my DH isnt ready :-(

Another good source of legs is headboards and foot boards. Lots of places with freecycle and craigslist have those for free. I've found "wooden gates" at used building supply places too. They sometimes have some great used wood peices that would do the trick.

It is not easy to find these suitcases and if you watch them on ebay - they can really get high ! My oldest dog chewed the rungs on all the chairs in the kitchen. No not just one but all four! Still haven't gotten around to repairing them. The youngest dog somehow (even through he only weighed 2 - 3 lbs as a pup) chewed up the carpet around 3 door facings. I did get that repaired.

I liked the first one the best, I REALLY liked the suitcase, it looks rich. My least favorite is the legs on "multi colored". I think a more neutral leg would be more marketable. That's not to say I didn't like it, I just think it might be more marketable with something less colorful. I truly LOVE the way you added the sheer netting and tag, VERY nice touch!!

Thank you all for your kind words and great ideas. I have wondered about having empty extra cases there for possible offering a more "custom" to that person's design - just that I'd hate to get more "custom" orders than selling what is already done. On the multi-colored one - I will have to revisit that one now that you have me thinking about that. Hopefully, after my first show, I'll get a better idea of what the public may want. You all have been my first "public" showing of them. lol Thank you again. -
Sandra - the first one I am doing is at the Oct. 16th flea market, but I will be set up at the Farmer's Market because the booth rental is so much cheaper there. There happens to be an agility dog competition at the arena that day too - lucky for me. We went to the flea market this past weekend to check it out, and the traffic is very busy, but not sure that was the traffic to buy these. We will see.
The craft fair I am doing is the "Fall Frenzy" - Tipton County's JA fair on Nov. 5th & 6th. (if you want the info on it - dmail me) Paul thinks these would do better at a craft fair than the Memphis flea market. I am not sure he thinks anyone would buy these. lol.-- he has already quizzed me on how much $$ I already have in these that I have done. oh me.

And yes - I do have a little love in each one of these - thank you for saying that. When someone buys one, I plan on attaching a little pet toy, etc to the mesh bow based on if it is a cat or dog. I have a bucket of these items I have been picking up - just $2-$3 toys.

Maybe you could do custom embroidering of names or something like that or pain names on the cases for customers who want custom for now. It would be an extra that you could do while they shop for an extra price. It would dry by the time they came back. You may not have time if they went well though.

I'd just have to mail them. The ones above on the sold cases are all out of my scrapbooking papers, etc.

I love the doggie beds, but my two prefer sleeping in OUR bed, such spoiled girls.

Try finding some small toys at the thrift stores, most of them look brand new and the price is always right. I did that when my mini schnauzer was a puppy and she loved them, except I had to look for eyes that were embroidered on as they love to chew them out right away. She does have a few special ones that look like they should be in the trash. Never thought I would be stitching up stuffed toys. LOL

My daughter's dog sleeps mostly in their bed too, but he will get out and sleep in his suitcase bed more often than they ever thought. He likes to hide his chewy bones under the pillow. I think success lies in where you sit it that the dogs like to rest. . . especially if they can see you. I haven't found a suitcase large enough for my dog yet. Yeah those big muscle breeds like Pits would be hard to fit on one. Chests don't come wide enough even if you got a big one.

Some rich people in a mansion had a custom Ottoman that was large as a square coffee table, maybe it was slightly longer than square but it was very dense foam and a great material on it almost the texture of an area rug but nice and it had legs on it like your cases but it was for 3 big fat pugs. We have a dog show here in February ... it is usually a really big one. It is right after Westminister and a lot of the same dogs come here. It would be great to offer them for sale there!

I think I would need one of the really LARGE size for my three French Bulldogs... but with short legs... LOL... the two young ones can jump like crazy but the momma dog can't jump at all! :)

How many do you have made up Bonnie? I bet you are going to need a bunch! Need to buy up as many of the old suitcases in the area that you can before the show to keep someone else from snatching them up!

I also like the photos of vintage suitcases made into tables and such. You don't have to always make cat and dog beds, some people don't have animals. These are links to some cute table ideas. Also if you Google vintage suitcase furniture you'll see other ideas.

I kind of think they may have done better a bit closer to Christmas when more people are out wanting to spend money.

Sandra texted me yesterday and told me she got me 4 more cases and my mom is camping up in KY and she called and said she got me 4 more. omg - These had better sell !!!... otherwise, I may have to come up with something else to do with them. lol.

You guys are THE BEST ! I will try to remember to take pics. A neighbor of mine that does craft fairs (purses, embroidery, etc) I saw them unloading this morning from an event and they told me not to get discouraged from the first one. They've been doing it 4 years and still have dud weekends. One real good advice they told me, is to make sure I have small $$ items in my booth to bring people in. I have 1 idea that I don't remember if I mentioned above or not.

A few weekends ago, we checked out the place we are setting up and met a lady that sells (human) pet jewelry - so she is kind of gearing toward the pet industry also. She told me she would be setting up at the dog agility show at the arena part of where I will be. So... I emailed her and asked if I paid part of her booth rental, would she allow me to put 1 bed and business cards in her booth and if questioned about them - she could direct them down to where I will be set up. I am hoping that she will just say that is fine - but no money for booth rental, if I'd just let her showcase her jewelry in my booth. That would be perfect and I wouldn't have to come up with some small items to sell.

helln - I tried the dog & cat events - but I think they are all done in my area for the year. If I decided to keep doing this - I may check into the spring events. That would probably be the best place to be set up, huh ?

It does take a bit of time sometimes to get established. I know at our Farmers' Market I look at some of the craft items for awhile before I jump in and buy.

Did you say you were making these for cats too, Bonnie? I just may have to have one for my Miss Boo. She loves to nap and sleep on things like pillows, boxes, chairs, anything that's stacked and elevated. Mr. Buster, on the other hand, is content to stretch out on the carpet. He's a bit of an odd cat though ... was from a feral den. I was thinking that if I get to make the nursery trip with the mid-South gals in April, I could get it from you then.

Cats are funny about where they choose to sit! I used to have 2 cats. One always sat on the back of the love seat. I think it gave her a good view. I finally just got a saddle bag (like a rug) and put where she sat so I could take it down and vacuum. The other one continually changed where she sat. If I brought in something new, that would be where she would sit, if she could get on it. Neither one of them would ever actually use the beds I bought for them or sit where I wanted them to sit.

Excited about your upcoming show Bonnie. I know they will be a big hit. By the way, we have a huge local craft fair that always takes place the last Saturday in September, and it is thought to "signal" the start of Christmas buying. Jessica works at Merle Norman and they had a HUGE day, and the owner told her that the Barn Sale ALWAYS kicks off the Christmas season...so maybe your show will be the same Bonnie. People are already thinking about Christmas and trying to get started early - well, at least some of them are!! Even if they don't buy, you may be planting seeds for later shows...

Thanks Genna - we will see. My neighbors tried to talk me into traveling in surrounding areas - but if you have to start paying hotel bills, etc - that is just not what I am about. I also work 4 days a week - which is an hour from the house, so traveling doesn't appeal to me much.

psych - that is what kind of worries me. Both of the sales are 1 day events, so no one will have the chance to come back the next day. However, I have some "homeade" business cards printed up - guess they can call me later.

n2birds you might want to tie your card to a dog bone/treat or something to make it stand out .

We sold our booth this year it was a one weekend a month market.
But you have to do something to stand out so people remember you . I know Im really bad about picking up cards and then losing them or If I don't write on them I don't remember who or what it went with .

we run into people all the time that say Oh I know you from Market... I still have your card

I will forsure do that on the business card idea. Will have to take a picture of that forsure to show you. Isn't DG the best !

I just rec'd an email from the lady with the jewelry and she didn't say I could do that in her booth, but that she forsure wants to buy a bed and her business partner will proabably want one also. How about that. So, if I sell only those 2 - that will be worth the show. NOW, I am getting excited.

Bonnie, your neighbor is right, when Judy and I were doing flea market it was the same way then, some days you could not even give stuff away, other days they would pay twice what something was worth, not even dicker about it--lol
With you having the cards to pass out, one sale can turn into several when that person's friends find out about the beds and want one for their pet, then they tell a circle of folks. So even one sale at a flea market can turn into several after the sale.
The main thing is to make sure you enjoy what you are crafting, that is why I make jewelry, I just love doing it. I never make anything with the idea in my mind of what I can sell it for, I make it because I love seeing those beads come together into something beautiful. In fact, as you know, I hate trying to sell it--lol

We knew early on that if were weren't selling fall flowers, vegetables or pumpkins - we weren't gonna sell a thing. We did learn a few important things from it. I knew we may not - and everyone kept telling me not to get discouraged, but it is a little hard to spend 4 adults entire Saturday and not feel like it was a wasted day:-(

n2birds: DO NOT GET Discouraged! Some days are diamonds, some days are coal. When I was going to Art shows and selling my oil paintings,I had the good, the bad, and the ugly days. One of my favorite memories is the day I had a oval 18x20 canvas which I had painted a beautiful (if I may say so myself) floral on it, and framed it in an antique gold oval frame. I would generally display my paintings on the display stands and then sit back and paint on something while the lookie loos came by. One lady stopped in front of the oval painting and exclaimed...Oh, it's perfect! It's just what I've been looking for! By this time I was at her side, and she continued to rave. She asked the price and I told her, and she said, No, I don't want the painting, I only want the frame. How much for just the frame? When I got my composure back I sweetly said, same price for the frame, and you get the painting for free! She didn't buy it but I did sell it later. Then I had the lady who asked me how I did the painting. I explained that I used gesso and a pallet knife giving the flowers a lot of texture and they just 'poppedout", and looked like there was a lot of oil paint used. She said they were just beautiful and she was going to home and give it a try,as she also painted. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. You will also have to learn to dismiss the comments folks make and don't take them personally. I don't know why they make some of them, just being rude? You may hear, Oh, I could do that!, Nice, but too expensive. Why would anyone want that? Have to remember not everyone likes the same things, that's what makes this such a great world. So, hang in there, one day you will have people falling over themselves trying to purchase one of your beds, and you won';t have enough made!

Your dog can't jump ? I know there are some pets that are old and can't jump (or shouldn't) but this is not like jumping a 5' hurdle or nothing. lol. My friend that was helping me said she was done with those folks and would have just held her hand up - like "go on". lol. I can't do that. Guess if they asked me how much I had in it, I'd probably answer that question too.
I am trying to keep upbeat about it. Between you guys and my family, no one wants to throw in the towel yet.

n2birds, NO, don't give up yet!! And absolutely dismiss the rude comments of an ignorant public, too. I truly think most people don't realize they're being rude and a small portion are just plain mean (or just stupid). A couple of us crafters rented a booth at a craft show and thought be would make a killing. The sweet ladies in the booth beside us were selling handmade dolls with the most hideous colored outfits. We were quite sure they wouldn't sell a thing and might even be laughed out of the place. To our surprise, we didn't sell much of anything and the doll ladies sold out of their stock, LOL. The next day of the show we sold a whole lot more of our crafts, but the doll ladies didn't sell a one of their 2nd group of dolls. That taught me a couple lessons: NEVER judge the acceptance of another person's craft, and the public is superbly fickle!

I was told once that there was a buyer for everything, you just have to put your goods in front of those looking for them. If you wanted a cleverly made pet bed/sofa, where would you look? You might sell a few at craft shows, but as someone already mentioned, a consignment deal at a retail store might be the best bet: pet supplies and pet care service stores, like dog walkers, groomers, or sitter service places of business; set up a display at the vets, or rent vendor booths at pet shows. People spend an obscene amount of money on their pet babies and I bet after you find your proper market, you could raise your prices, too!

SOOooooooo true Sundownr, finding the RIGHT place to put the goods in front of the right people, at the RIGHT time! I used to work in an upscale ice cream parlor that was in a mall (over 30 years ago LOL). We ran our bunnies off during big sale days at the mall but the tips were lousy. People were in a bargain/ saving money frame of mind during those days. We got MUCH better tips on days that were not huge sale times.

Another thing you might try is to find the most exclusive clothing stores in town and ask if your pet beds could be incorporated into the next window dressing session. I figure Christmas is right around the corner and most stores will be dressing their windows up with the most expensive and unique gifts they can muster. At the very least, your beds may generate "talk" which will in turn send more folks to look at the store's windows. The store can refer interested people to you for custom critter couches and the store got a little attention... a win-win for you both.

Too funny sundown about the doll ladies. We sat there and laughed at these ladies that worked so hard to set tons and tons of fresh flowers out. Well... they sold so many, we even thought about going and buying some. I think the location we were at - the vendors are regulars, so the customers were coming specifically to buy what they knew was there. Again - the WRONG LOCATION. lol

I just want to say - you guys are THE BEST !!! Each and every one of you with all of your encouraging words. I was telling my step-daughter and my DH about how great you guys are.

Interesting thought Sandra. If gas was up this past weekend - no one told all those people that went to the flea market. The parking for the flea market was all the way over at the farmer's market. However, don't know if they were buying anything. hmmmm.

hang in there Bonnie! You just have to find your niche! Do NOT tell people what you have in it as far as MONEY, but you might casually say well, about 6 hrs worth of work (searching for the luggage, bringing it home, gas to and from to pick up luggage, paint, supplies, etc and your TIME actually putting it together!)...yes, someone CAN duplicate your idea, and a handful MIGHT, but most people are not going to bother with attempting it themselves! Pet stores might give you the chance to put a one in there on consignment, kennels should be a GREAT place to put them on consignment...because during the holidays a lot of people will be boarding their babies while they travel; also grooming shops, veterinary clinics, etc. There is lots of potential, you just need to tap it.

And, on the woman who wanted the legs cut off because her dog couldn't jump... I had to laugh out loud because my momma french bulldog cant jump either...she just never learned how. Her babies can jump several feet up onto things... she has to be PICKED up! LOL...she might could crawl up onto the beds since they aren't very high off the ground, but she would definitely need the shorter legs. But you just tell those customers, that you would be happy to make a custom bed with shorter legs, or not legs at all... I am sure that would shut her up because she probably had no plans of buying one! :)

Hang in there Bonnie, you have a great product and you will find the right way to market it...

When I had my shop/booths and even now with things on consignment, the public can just drive you crazy sometimes. Many a time I've wanted to slap someone silly. But you do get used to it after awhile. Those beds are wonderful and you will find the right market. People are crazy about their pets and our pets are a multi-billion dollar a year business in this country. So there. :-D

I have another one of those dogs that can't jump. It's not the breed, she just doesn't know she can. When she was a puppy we never encouraged her to jump up. We just always picked her up. So she doesn't know she can. Then we got Charlie, who is the same breed and I can't keep him off stuff!! He learned to jump totally on his own - we never encouraged it. I have a loveseat in the sunroom that just sits in the middle of the floor and he jumps up on it and gets up on the back of it and just prances around! Samantha watches Charlie and his antics but she never tries it herself!

Yes the public can drive you crazy. When I had my store there were some strange people but I had one that too the cake. She brought an expensive vase back to me about 6 months after she brought it (she lived out of state) claiming it had been broken and repaired before she bought it. I knew that was not the case and was very nice but stood my ground. It was obvious that it had been broken and repaired but I knew it was not like that when it left my store. The reason was she had wanted to have a lamp made out of it and wondered if it could be done. I had thoroughly looked at it as well as a couple of my employees and also let her take it down the street to a lamp shop to see if it could be made into a lamp. With at least 4 people other than herself looking at it someone would have noticed if it was damaged. She threatened to report me to the BB if I didn't refund her money. I told her if she felt that was what she needed to do that I could certainly understand. She did not report me and that was the last I ever heard of her. She was just trying to blackmail me and I wasn't going to let her do it. Yes you do run into all kinds dealing with the public!! That is just one of many stories I have.

That is one of the reasons I don't like to sell my jewelry, it is homemade and a lot of the things I do are put together with needle and thread--threads will eventually break, they get snagged. The way people are if they wear it a year and it breaks they will grieve because they paid 5 bucks for it and say I did not make good jewelry. I don't guarantee anything I make, but do offer to try to repair it if something happens to it.

Know what you mean! Nothing with last forever and you never know what they have done to it.
I forgot to say the piece the lady claimed was broken and repaired was a brand new piece I bought from a company at the Dallas market! It was not a vintage piece that could have been broken at time and repaired.

Yeah, sometimes the ones who are vendors or have businesses themselves are the worst. They make me the maddest. They want you to sell to them for nothing so they can turn around and resell and make a profit. Phooey. Find your own stuff and do your own work. At least that's how I see it. :-/

This is the best idea! We found that there is a peculiar spot in the American psyche that makes folks not respect an item if the price is acceptably low. When the price was raised to ~nearly out of reach for most folks~ the vendors couldn't keep it in stock and had waiting lists.

Not sure what your price is. But they have to be fairly pricey with all the money you have to be putting into them. The stuff you are using is not cheap. I don't remember who suggested it but the idea of approaching a boutique to use them in their windows I thought was a really good idea. I don't think it's the price - but getting them before the right folks. Finding the right type show. I know our Junior League does a Christmas show every year and it has high end merchandise. They screen what is allowed in. I'm sure there are more of that type show in your area.

There is a lady that comes to our flower and garden show every year and she sells pillows and denim shirts that have verses embroidered on them. Her pillows are made out of beautiful floral material. She always sells out and they are fairly expensive. I think she has found her niche and style and the right market.

Your beds have the boutique look...so i wouldn't lower the price for sure! I would just try to find some higher end stores to let you put them on consignment, etc... and you might need to raise your price in those stores to cover their fees ...

hellnzn11 - Oh my gosh! What kind of neighbors do you have. Can you get a video of them spraying your dogs? I don't know what I'd do, that is so wrong. What a monster. Mine just calls me White Trash, she apparently does not like my garden art, but then who cares. The rest of folks on the cud de sac, just stay away from her. We've discussed her and have come to the conclusion that she thinks she is better than us (listens to Opera) most of us listen to country or we think it's a lack of meds or just plain nuts. But hurt my animals and I would be all over her.

I know we don't know if we could prove it. We were going to give him an autopsy but realized that we could not prove he did it without footage of it. If another dog gets sick we can exhume Corby which would scar me for life but we need a solid barrier wall up. Which would solve most of the problems. He sprays Herbicides and Pesticides too over here. I have 2 Pines there too. If something happens to my dogs there will be hell to pay. Corbin was driving him nuts barking, but the loser does not work, he has a pest control company and he stays home and makes his wife work spraying houses. He just has an OCD for spraying to kill all weeds and seeds daily. My dogs see him through the chain link and think he is in their yard. We watch him he lunges at my dogs baiting them. My husband was so pissed the other day that he saw the dogs over there looking at him and yelled Chloe and BoBo come here before he poisons you.
