Mekos, still praying for you and your family, and hope the surgery went well. Hope everyone else is having a good weekend and having nice weather. Kelly, sure am glad we don't have it as hot as you do! Thanks everyone for all the wonderful birthday wishes. You're right Kelly, it's hot even in New York. Garden is growing great, we're eating the early tomatoes already with more to come later. Looks like it's going to be a good year, hopefully free of the dreaded blight of last year.

It's been a busy week here. We're cleaning out Gramp's farm house for our final estate sale in about two weeks. Our son Richie is moving into the house and wants to move in some of his own furniture so a lot of the old stuff will have to be sold. I love yard sales but they are a lot of work to organize. Richie recently got rehired at Corning Glass (makers of Pyrex, Corelleware, TV glass, and many other things) which is only 7 miles from where he lives. He will be making new ceramic mufflers designed for future cars an trucks. Gramps was a mechanical engineer at the same company nearly 50 years ago.

I did get to the airshow last Friday, but we had to fly around a thundercloud in order to get there (such fun!). Made it in by late afternoon, wife followed up later in the car. Over 170 airplanes there for the show on Saturday and Sunday though I didn't get to fly during the performances, just watch.

Busy busy week, I'll send some garden pictures soon.

Al

Glad you had a great birthday Sandi! This is the time of year I wish I lived in Wyoming - lol - anywhere but Phoenix.

Al - I can't believe how hot New York and most of the east coast has been. Sweltering! Especially when you're not used to it. This time of year is our monsoon season, though we haven't gotten any rain, but the humidity is high. We're not used to that. When it's 115 and 25%+ humiduty it's stifiling. Glad your garden is going well. I still have a few 'maters ripening and the cherries are still setting fruit - even in this heat. Eggplant. okra, sweet taters, peppers and melons of all kinds going gangbusters. Oh and Basil. Everything else is limping through...

I think it's great your son is moving into Gramps' house - how neat! Good luck with the sale and all.

Hi everyone. Thanks to all for the prayers and good thoughts. He seems better today, we got a great dr. who actually started treating him for spider bite and just in the nick of time. He may not lose his finger or hand. But it has damaged his kidneys, so please continue to pray for his kidneys. Some # is suppose to be 1.3 or lower, and his is 3.6 and riseing. Very dangerous so I'm very worried. Take care everyone. HUGS!

RRM - looks like my Duranta repens - Sapphire Showers. I sent mekos a cutting last year that took me forever to get it to root. And it made it through her winter greenhouse disaster!

I found this morning glory today in a field a couple of miles from my house. Its just growing wild in the field. I'm going back to see if I can dig up one or find seeds.

It has a very large flower, almost the size of palm of my hand.

Hello everyone. I'm back for a bit. Marti that is a wild moonvine, I think. They grow wild around here too. I have several outside. They are pretty and usually if you dig them up and move them, they die, but seeds will grow more. They are real common in our fields and roadsides.
Yep, RRM, that looks just like the one Loca rooted for me and it bloomed and has been so pretty. I love it.
Thanks nettie. He seems to be better just having the problem with the kidneys and it is common for spider bites but very dangerous.
Love to see the flowers Sissy70.

Nice pics sissy!

RRM - the Duranta is a tender perennial. It will survive outside in the ground here but may need to be potted where you are at or at least in a protected spot. Jan's survived her big freeze in the greenhouse with flying colors.

I think mine is about to croak;o( It blew down last winter in a big storm and the big pot shattered. I cut it back and repotted it but it's not doing so well. Could be the heat too. I'm crossingmy fingers it survives the summer. If it does it will go in the ground. They can get several feet tall here in ground!

Good morning everyone. Danny got to come home from the hospital today. Shocked me to death. He called me at 6:00am and asked me to come get him, and he had begged the dr. to let him come home and just see his dr. at home. He didn't want to be so far away from everyone. So I just got back from getting him and taking him home. His kidneys are still not doing well, but the dr. said he could be treated just as well at home so I hope he is right. Anyway, I sure can use the rest.
Nettie, hope your check up is good. You don't be growing anything except flowers now.
Sissy the flowers are just beautiful.
RRM, that plant needs to come in for winter. Mine was in the greenhouse and when the power went off that night, it got bit a little but survived because the power came back on in the next day. If it had been longer without heat, it would have croaked too.
Mine is in a pot and growing great.
Got to go do some needed cleaning, so you all have a great day and thank you all for the prayers. HUGS my friends!

Mekos - sooooooo glad to hear Danny is home! Still praying for a speedy and total recovery...

RRM - I might take you up on that offer if this one croaks. I will be so sad as I've had it for years. It is a little difficult to root the cuttings depending on the time of year you try. I find them hard all the time - lol... Of all the ones I tried to root last year one made it - the one I sent mekos - lol. Many rooted but didn't make it when transplanted. It's a picky plant.

We are getting so many days with 100 and 105 degree heat. - can't remember having heat like this. I went out at 7:00am to take a picture and the camera fogged up!!!! What heat that early! You stay cool and hug the air too, I do.

My early miniature tomatoes grown from special "Tumbler" seeds purchased from Jung's. I kept four of these planted in one gallon pots, been eating them since first week in July (very early for here). Al, I loved your coleus! And I love the one from Home Depot, RRM! It's very cute with its spreading little leaves!
County Fair is going on this week here, so between work and that will be popping in only once in awhile! Gotta go to the fair and see all the kiddos in the area showing their animals and plants! Just gotta support the kids with their 4H and FFA projects, even tho ours are long out of it!
Al, my mater plants just keep growing and growing, and tons of blossoms, but no little maters yet! Only produce yet is actually one little cuke. You can tell how weird this year is and how far behind compared to what we usually have by now. OH! And got my first MG blooms today, lol! Thanks you guys. I think she will be doing stuff early. My oldest daughter started walking at 5 months and ran everywhere by 7 months and could talk your head off at 7 months. Cut her teeth at 3, 4 and 5 months and all her jaw teeth while I was in the hospital (having baby #2)at 11 months old. Out of diapers at 8 months old and off her bottle. Sucked a paci till she was 3 years old. She turned over for the first time in the newborn nursery at the hospital. No one believed it except the nurse that saw it. That was exceptional and none of the next 3 did anything like that. Each was slower than the one before it. My last one was very lazy. I'm really amazed at how well she is doing. Hugs everyone. Yep - my license expires on my 65th birthday - in 2035! They "recommend" you update your picture every so often. I think the initial license is $25 and you can get a replacement for $10. It's been a while so not sure if the prices are right or not still - lol. They get their money on emissions testing and outrageous registration fees... Any reinstatement fees from all the people whose license gets suspended or revoked. The fees for that kind of stuff are outrageous.

CUTE Trish. Just wait till he gets too big to sit in there with your DH. He will not be a happy camper. Ours got too big to sleep in bed with us and cried and cried when we moved them out. They pushed us off the bed they were so big. I moved them to the huge garden tub in my master bathroom and they could see us and they started sleeping in the bath tub at night. They took over the sofa, and it was not easy to get them off. They grew up thinking they were people instead of dogs.
You got your work cut out for you.

Lol Mitt "outside" dog..I've never had an animal in the house(except fish) till Caleb brought this pup home at 4 weeks old..To young to be weened, had to be bottle fed, to cold outside to be left out there alone..Sigh..Now he will be 4 months old on the 8th weighs 25 pounds and is more spoiled than the kids..He goes outside when I water or when the boys are playing..Otherwise he thinks this is a big dog house..Im still not crazy about having a dog in the house, but im crazy about the dog lol..He lets me hose him down outside, seems to like it actually, then dry him with a towel or he runs round and round like a crazy dog then he comes in and goes to his bed, or to one of the kids beds if they will let him... He sleeps in the utility room at night on his bed..To be a pup(with such a stubborn reputation) hope im not speaking to soon, he sure is a good dog so far..My husband spoils him worse than anyone, that was his pillow the dog was sleeping on after DH got off the couch.I try to keep him in his bed and off the furniture then he comes home and you see what happens..

More pretty porch flowers in bloom. Weather is finally backing off temperature wise, it's almost comfortable around here. Heard about Chelsea's wedding not far from here but I didn't get invited, so sorry I can't share any pictures. I guess they spurred the local economy a bit though, which is a good thing. I hope they ate well using local veggies and all.

Good morning everybody. I was just sitting here looking at Al's bird up there and a big green lizzard was on the screen outside my window in front of me and also a pretty good size moth and the lizzard slowely went over toward the moth and waited a bit just watching and then pounced and got that moth and in 2 seconds it was GONE! He had breakfast! Now to my pond for a cool drink ;0)
Congrats to your grandson Nettie. Something to be proud of! Hopeing the other does good with his chickens. (2 thumbs up!)
We are still dry too. No rain at all for a while now. Had to water stuff this morning and almost passed out , not gonna risk it again. Plants may die but I just can't help it.
I'm still weak and shakey. Got go rest up and cool off some more I guess. Have a great day you all. Love the rooster Charleen. CUTE!

Wow Nettie! Great going! Best of show is awesome! Would love to see some pictures when you get time! Congrats!! Sounds like our state fair a couple of years ago with all your heat. We had that problem, and the poor kids here lost so many birds and rabbits due to heat strokes, etc. Feel for the kids having to go thru that with their animals. Do the kids there use PVC pipe filled with water and then frozen and then put in the pens with their animals there? We've been seeing that alot here. Works really well to helping the smaller critters cool when they are cooped up in those buildings.

Nettie, I'm proud of you girl wit a Best of Show WIN! Congratulations! You can freeze water in a soft drink bottle too and put in the pens for the animals. Helps a lot in this heat. Take several frozen bottles and switch them out as needed. Keep the unused ones in a insulated container to keep it cold. Animals will appreciate it. And YOU ALL take care not to get too hot out in this heat too. Drink lots of fluids. Have fun and tell us all about it when you get back. Take pictures if you can. We like pictures! LOL

One of the treasures we found in Gramps estate was this 1942 Edition of Maule's Seed Catalog. Interesting piece we have here. It's was published in almost comic book format with pulp inside pages and a beautiful glossy color cover. It's a real look at gardening seen 68 years ago! Some of the varieties are pretty close to what we have today. I've spent hours absorbed in this thing, it even has the original order form and return envelope attached.

This is only one inside page. I tried to scan the beautiful cover but it wouldn't bump over to my computer.

It's really neat reading about the history of some of these seed varieties. Thanks for finding the web site on Wm Maule. Maule's apparently went out of business in the early 1950's. I'm glad that the Victory Seed Co. in Oregon, among several others, has managed to save some of the older seed types.

This catalog is so cool I was thinking about sending it out on a round robin tour if anybody is interested in seeing it. It doesn't have any particular value, but I would like to see it returned someday.

Hi nettie, glad you all are doing so well at the fair. I just love to hear about the kids doing those things. It is so nice. The frozen water jugs will make a difference to the animals. This heat is just too much on caged animals enclosed that way. Poor babies. I wish I could get him some of my colored egg laying chicks. Mine are the ones that lay colored eggs and so friendly when raised from a baby. Silkies make the best PET chickens. I've raised all kinds.
We got rain last night and so nice. Got to go see about the baby. She is waking up. Later.

Good morning All Im glad to say we did a lil rain almost an inch.. Guess that will keep the grass from dying and make the weeds grow even if theres no hope left for the plants. Some of my hosta's are looking real bad from the dry heat(the ones I didnt keep watered) They flowered are proceeded to start turning brown..They may get a lil more morning sun than they actually like, but have done well there for 3 year without this problem, or at lease this early in the year..My wild geraniums look like sticks now. This was my first year to see them big and blooming so not sure how long they last each year. Its to the point here now that only the strong survive..Hope you all have a great weekend.. Nettie my son is growing fryer hens for the county fair competition then hopes to sell whats left..lol Ive never eaten a chicken from the back yard.. HUNEY, the key to eating a chicken that roams around is put it up in a pen for 2 weeks feeding it grain or laying crumbles then kill it to eat. You don't want to eat one roaming and eating just anything , so keeping it in a pen for at least 2 weeks will ensure a cleaner diet and better tasteing for you. Hope they sell for him. Maybe you'll get some rain this weekend, it has helped us. We got a little last night late.

I saved a few of my "Tumbling Tom" miniature tomato seeds to try over the summer. My aim is to plant them now in hopes for an indoor crop around Christmas time. If anybody is interested I will likely have a few transplants available to ship around (?) October 1st. Keep in mind that this is kind of an experiment and I don't know the exact results until I try it. They seem to grow well in larger containers. Let me know if you would like to join this adventure and try a couple.

I can also do some stem clips from my green Coleus, which is still healthy but getting a litttle rangly right now.

Good idea nettie. I sure don't have a steady hand nor good eyes so I guess it wouldn't be my cup of tea. I always loved to see the drawings though. Someone drew a pencil sketch of my sister and it was sooo cool. I just wish I could do stuff like that.
I'd love to have the cake receipe for peaches. I use preserves to make the muffins. It is thicker and richer. More peachy taste. (Just ask Marti)

Tomatoes are self-pollination - no need for bees;o) A good breeze or shake the plant and the pollen will drop. They grow successfully in a greenhouse so don't see why they wouldn't grow inside if you had a nice sunny spot!

To make Peach Upside down cake in the crockpot, you need a couple of things. You need a baking dish at least 3 1/2 - 4 inches deep that will fit inside your crockpot. I had a large round crockpot that worked good for this recipe. I wish I had brought it from Calif with me, but thought I could replace it here. Now I can't find a round crockpot anywhere in this town. All of them are oblong and I havn't found an oblong baking dish that will work.

Once you have the proper baking dish that will fit inside the crockpot, than you need to take aluminum foil and fold it several times to make a long piece of foil. You need 2 of these strips. You will use these, crossed to lower the baking dish into the crockpot and remove it when done.

Now for the cake You will need:
1 box of Pound Cake mix
1 large can of peaches or you can use fresh or frozen ones.
a handfull of pecans (I prefer chopped walnuts)
Brown sugar
Butter/margrine
Bottle of cherries (optional)

In the bottom of the baking dish you melt 2 - 3 tablespoons of butter/margrine, than cover the bottom of the dish with brown sugar, nuts, and add cherries if you want cherries. Mix the pound cake per box instuctions but add 1 teaspoon Almond Extract. Pour slowly over Brown Sugar mixture. Place dish on crossed foil pieces and lower into crockpot. Turn crockpot on high for 3 1/2 - 4 hours or low for 6 - 8 hours. When done, lift dish out with foil strips and place on counter. Place plate on top and carefully flip over and let sit for about 5 minutes. Than slowly lift off baking dish. I like it served warm with a little whipped cream.
I've been making this here and putting it in the over as I don't have the crockpot and it comes out good.

Pretty Robin!

When I get around to downloading my pics from the trip, I have a rose I'm hoping you might be able to help me identify. My Mom dug it up years ago from an old farm, so I assume it's a wild rose. Beautiful hot pink blooms with real rose smell! Problem is it has a lot of dead canes (and black spot - but I told her about that - lol) and it needs to be pruned so it looks better. Problem is not knowing what kind it is I don't know when/how to tell her to prune it. I know there are different ways and times depending on the rose, but I know so little about them. Hopefully you or someone can ID it for me;o)

He is gonna dig late Thursday evening and I'm picking mine up Friday morning so if you want them when I get mine, I can get him to dig yours at the same time and pick them up with mine, or if you need more time to look, no problem, I can go back later and get them. Nope Robin - that's not it either. The buds on mine are small and tight and it's hot pink. I'll get the pics this weekend downloaded...

oh yes ive rested up from the fair im resting from a flower design class i went to yeaterday they tire me out because im so short i have to stand up to see what is going on. the train was from5 or 6 yrars ago i love to do trains i collected them for many years but how many trains does one person need. have alot of rock island stuff most of it packed away children will have a fild day with it when im gone. they will probley talk bad about me. most of the books will go to the library in town. i forget how much train stuff is stuck in yhis house may need to rid myself of some of it.im sure the grand sons will need some of it.they can do whst ever they wonto do with it. i won,t care.its just dust catchrrs my mom was like that it only makes more work for me.

Wow Nettie, praying for rain for you. I don't like the fires either. We been getting some little showers at night and not much but every little bit helps. It is letting everything turn green again. We needed it bad too. So hoping for rain for you too. Good night Hugs everyone.
