have tons of drying safflowers, but do not know how to save the seeds. do i save the entire head or open it up? will it open by itself? seed heads are kind of prickly, not sure how to handle. any advice greatly appreciated, do not want to lose them.

Wait until the seed heads turn brown and dry. Then pick the seed heads and put them in a paper bag. Some of them will open by itself, some not. If not, remove the pricky leaves and break the pod open to collect the seeds. After that keep them in a paper bag for at least a week to dry them well.
