What time of the year should I cut back lilac from "tree" status to become "bush" status again?

I'm no expert, but had lilacs in Alberta (zone 3). I don't think it will hurt them to be trimmed back at any time. Where we lived you could not kill a lilac. I think they bloom on second year wood so all your existing 'suckers' should bloom next year anyway.
