Answer to 9-25 Garden Riddle

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I am Okra. Abelmoschus esculentus.

Thought to be native to area now known as Ethiopia, okra has been enjoyed by many cultures. Popular for centuries in India and the Mediterranean Basin, this cousin to the hollyhock and hibiscus was brought to the New World by the Portuguese. Okra is either loved or hated for the slimy mucilage it produces, but it is a nutritious vegetable that deserves respect.
