Terrific write-up. I seldomly see these in my yard. But they're fun to watch. Thanks for the interesting reading.

I know they are around, but I don't see them real frequently. That's why I was amazed at this one I found in my back yard. Maybe a Carolina Mantis? They sure are interesting critters.

I love the praying mantis. We had hundreds of them around here last year and I got lots of pictures. This summer and fall we have had hardly any. I don't know if that was because of the 32" of snow or the 90F and more heat this summer. I actually got to watch one lay an eggcase last year. Thank you for the post.

I have seen some around the yard here, not many. I might consider leaving the porch light on to see if they come, but it is one of those yellow anti bug lights. I remember seeing a photo of a large praying mantis holding a mouse and eating it. 3 years ago when our Miniature Pinscher was a puppy, she came across a Praying Mantis on the patio. The two of them had a stand off that lasted for some time. The dog kept staring and would occasionally lift a paw and the mantis just stood its ground looking aggressive and ready to box with the dog. The puppy finally left her post.
