The first person to cross off ALL the plants they have chosen should post “BINGO” in this thread. If more than 1 person posts bingo, the one with the earliest posted time will be the first winner. Once lbrabec verifies the bingo, the winner will choose a number (1-4) and will then receive the corresponding prize directly from the donor.
As we have 4 donated prizes, there will be 4 “Bingo” winners and 1 “biggest loser”. The biggest loser will be the person who has the most names left on their card after the first 4 bingo's have been called. In the event of a tie, one of my adorable kids will draw a winner from the remaining cards.
Ok, I've got one of two stratgies...but I'm not sure which I want to go with...either go for biggest loser (probably my best bet, LOL!!!) or go get me some kinda Bingo hat that is adorned with lots of luck and wear it each and every time I come to this thread. So far I'm on a roll for the biggest loser, but I'm used to it and happy with it...and LOVE the idea of it ;-)
I can't believe that you actually have both on your list - what a great start.
I am lucky. I'll win this game - no hat - Did win a chevy once at a hospital fair. Beautiful Impala - the car also saved three lives, because of the size. Very lucky.
Way back ,I think 1972 or 03. We were as poor as a church mouse, I did have a car though. DH took DD and friend ski-ing hit ice in vermont and had a 10 car pileup behind him. Friends of ours went in their impala (lrg at that time) were right behind him and brought the three home unharmed. The car stayed in Vermont, totalled. - Lucky twice.
It's time I win something againI think. No bingo Hat.
Thanks Connie! I have such low light inside the house, photo's are too dark so I usually take plants outside and take pic's of them with the pool water in the background. LOL, re: the bingo hat ... I've played before and it goes in spurts, get a few ... go a long time before getting anymore, but it's always so much fun to play!
I am sorry to say I am not going to be able to stay to play bingo. My frame of mind is not to good at this time and I will not be on puter that much. My son Matt leaves for hell tomorrow.
My time is up almost on Daves also and I may come back later but not right now.
Hugs to All,
My heart aches for you. You have to stay strong and keep a positive spirit for Matt. I am not playing so would you like for me to watch your card for you? Just think, you might receive a Bingo surprise in the mail right when you need it the most:))))) I would be honored to do that for you!
You know you are always in my thoughts and prayers as are your loved ones.
If you would like Sister Connie to watch your list in case you change your mind,I will forward it to her.
Let us know!!
I'm so sorry to hear that your son is having to leave again. Is he being deployed to Afghanistan this time? Please give him our best wishes for a safe deployment to wherever he is headed.
I was not blessed with children but I know it's only natural for a mother to be concerned and worried about the safety of her children, young or old ... whether they are in their own backyard, a block away at a friends house, away at school, and most especially when they are thousands of miles away ... a mother worries.
Playing Bingo might be a little diversion for you, but if you aren't emotionally up to it right now, we will all understand. Just remember that we are here if you ever feel the need for "company", just to chat, or need your spirits lifted a little bit.
I will keep Matt in my prayers, as well as you and your entire family.
The photo contest has closed and voting is now taking place. I did enter a few pictures but don't know why I didn't think of enter the one of the Gulf Fritillary B'fly! I did enter one with a butterfly but it was a Swallowtail B'fly.
... I just finished voting, took me two days to get through all the categories and photo's!
I didn't even find the County Fair contest until it was over and done with! I just went back through the Daves Garden Forum and found the winners ... scroll down to the bottom and each category is listed and if you click on a category it will show the winners: http://davesgarden.com/contest/2010-daves-garden-county-fair
edited to say: Old, ditzy, forgetful blonde here ... now that I've looked through most of those County Fair pic's I realize I did indeed find the contest and even remember voting.
Sorry, all . . . forgot to make the posts for yesterday last night after the meeting! We had a great program last night . . . David from Dave's Violets (yeah, THE sinningia guy - Ozark series!) was there to provide some information on the care and hybridization of sinningia's . . .
Calls for today (& yesterday!):
47. Streptocarpus – Northwoods Frosted Moonshine
18. Alsobia – Chiapas
56. AV – Galactic Storm
61. AV – Knight Magic
Nichole: You did make picks yesterday, November 10th 12:53 a.m. The ones called were 37, 3 & 53.
I have 6 so far!
I forgot to say, if I should get Bingo I forfeit any prize ... I just want to play for the fun of it and to chat with all of y'all again! So, when it comes down to the last calls ... if I holler Bingo, the next person in line can claim that particular prize!
Well, I know from the time zone differences it may have posted at 12am, but believe me, I was NOT up at 12am,! Those 3 calls were for my 11/9 at 10:59pm . . . but who's keeping track? I have no objection to making a few extra calls once in a while . . . we did get a late start after all . . .
Nichole: I forgot about the time zone difference, I guess it was 10:59pm for you and almost 1:00am for me but I think you are only one hour different than me ... maybe it's the time change from DST back to Eastern Standard Time? LOL, who knows ... sometimes I think I'm in a time zone all my own!
I do think the times here on DG may be messd up. It's 12:36 my time right now and Lynn, your last post shows 1:18 p.m. and Tommie's last post shows 1:24 p.m. ??!&% Aren't y'all an hour earlier than me?? I wonder if we have to re-set things in our preferences?
edited to say: I just came back to check and the time on my post is showing right for me, what about y'all?
I just went into my DG Preferences and fixed it. It's weird but in the 4 years I've been on DG I don't ever remember having to change the time back and forth ... thought it was automatic somehow, LOL. I guess it's that Ditzy Blonde thing again.
I don't think the time issue here is because of daylight savings . . . I noticed the times I posted vs. the "DG time" was an hour off for weeks. I think maybe because the new owners are in a different time zone than where the site originated . . . just a theory.
Apparently, and this isn't the first time, my strategy is to eliminate the numbers most likely to be called. I made a list and then cut it back to the required number to play. This is the same every time I play--next time I will make a list, cut it back and send the rejected list. It has just been a while since I played and I forgot I meant to do it that way LOL. For me it is truly not whether I win or lose-- but the fun of playing the game--good thing
I had been keeping the original "pick" list up to date with calls made, but I posted that list in a new thread, so all can see what calls have been made and when. I posted the link at the very top of the first post in this thread.
I've got 7 out of the 16 called so far. Did I mention that I'm just playing for fun? I forfeit any prize if I should get Bingo. I've been sick with a horrid cold the past three days and can't remember if I mentioned that I will not claim a prize.
Thanks for the update Lynn, it makes the game even more interesting. I was very sory for Susan's sad news... does anybody watch her card? Why don't let Lynn do it while checking all other cards? it would be only fair to keep Sue playing with us
I am still watching her card (along with everyone else) until she makes her final decision about continuing in the game and at Dave's.
I watch everyone cards, because I am the cardholder, but everyone needs to watch their own and call bingo when we get to that point.
I will post how everyone is doing ,especially when the competition gets tough.
jamjew, when you are making up your card, you can do it without having to write anything. Just copy and print a copy of the list, save it in notebook (or something similar) use your hard copy to make selections. Go back to the saved copy, delete line by line the ones you don't want to use, save that and copy, then paste the new list into e-mail--takes a little while, but you can be sure all the information is there in the same order it was originally sent.

The cat question was kind of like an "extra credit" thing. . . the person who answered the question was guaranteed a mark off their card - except that everyone with that particular number on their card gets to mark it off.
Jamie: Don't give up ... that's how Bingo always goes ... you might be on a roll for awhile and get almost every single call, then it'll slow down and you might not get one for awhile. I've been out of town since last Wednesday and didn't end up taking my laptop. My husband took his but I never got a chance to get on-line and when I checked just now I don't have any of the calls from the past few days! The most fun really starts near the end of the game when everyone is real close with maybe three or four needed to holler bingo! It's always fun waiting and watching for those last few needed!
Yippee, I got one of today's calls ... Petrocosmea HT2! And, that little beauty is one I just bought from the Violet Barn a couple of weeks ago ... teeny little plant but so cute, and I will be thrilled if I can keep it alive long enough to see those pretty blooms!
LOL Tommie ... I bought a Petrocosmea barbata from Rob's Violets a few years ago and it didn't really seem to do anything under my care, it didn't totally die but it wasn't a real happy plant. I ended up trading it to Raingazer before I could kill it ... and here I am buying another one!
In the 70's and 80's I worked really long hours and didn't have a lot of time to spend tending plants, yet I seemed to find the time to water them too much! I don't know why I thought they were always thirsty! Life is strange, now I'm retired and have quadruple the number of plants, all the time in the world to play in the dirt and take care of them ... and yet, I either forget to water, or I'm just too lazy and think "I'll do it tomorrow". And, nowadays I grow all of my plants (except Gessie's) in a chunky, fast draining mix. I grow everything on the dry side ... sometimes extremely dry, LOL.
Oohh, I like that petrocosmea HT-2 too! I'm tempted to order from Violet Barn as well. I haven't tried these before because I hear that heat will kill 'em. Does anyone know what max. temp. they can take and still live? My plant room gets to 82 in the summer.
ROFLMBO!!!! If that's true then they must thrive on neglect! Those poor babies I sent you would dry out and wilt and I would revive them, only to let it happen all over again. That's why they flew north! I still have 2 (Momo and barbata) they were so pitiful I was embarassed to send them, they are obviously tough though since they are still bumping along and still pitiful only larger.
LOL They are much more pitiful now.Every time I get new center leaves the old ones die.I have tried dry, med. and now I am trying wicking. They are not much bigger...maybe even smaller, the poor things.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful day with family and friends ... and if you happen to be alone on this holiday I hope you have a serene and peaceful day!
We usually go to South Florida to my sister's for the holiday but decided to stay home this year, so it's just the two of us. We are dog sitting our friends little dog while they are in Virginia. "Scooter" is used to his two cats but he sure isn't happy being here with our old kitty ... he barks and raises a ruckus every time he gets a glimpse of her! We are keeping them separated because we're afraid he would attack her ... he gets along fine with the two cats they have but he doesn't like other animals at all!
Well, I've baked a pumpkin pie, cooked fresh green beans, the turkey is stuffed and in the oven, and I will make mashed potato's a little later, so we can have an early dinner.
I know some area's of the country are experiencing snow and ice already but it's currently 81º here with low humidity, a perfect Florida day! It's so nice that my husband decided to take his motorcycle out for a ride, which keeps him out of the kitchen and out of my way, LOL.
I am so Thankful for all you wonderful folks here in Dave's Garden. Wishing you all many Blessings on this day of Thanksgiving!
Aaah, Wrangler's Pink Patches is such a beauty! I had a small one once but couldn't keep it alive. Pink has always been one of my favorite colors and I remember when I first joined DG ... I had no idea there were ANY AV's with variegated foliage, much less pink variegated foliage! I was in seventh heaven when I found some pink variegated AV's at Home Depot in 2007 and then got a small Wrangler's Pink Patches in a trade here. There's only one picture of Wrangler's Pink Patches in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/135448/
Gee, seeing all all of these beauties makes me want to set up stands and try my hand at growing AV's again. I've still been thinking of trying a trailer ... maybe after the first of the year.
I bought some Aeschynanthus 'Mona Lisa' cuttings at the state show earlier this month . . . I stuck one in a 3oz solo to root, but my friend Glenda from Austin said that if I laid the other piece down on soil it would root from the leaf junctions (I really gotta start using "official" terms) . . . I took a picture of the cuttings yesterday . . .
Here is another angle . . . it looks like some "thingies" are growing. My point, you ask? My point would be (Lin) hehehe that if they grow quickly, maybe in a month or two if the weather in both are places are decent, I could mail you one of the rooted cuttings. Not an african violet, but still related . . . baby steps and all . . .
Tommie: I might take you up on the Episcia stolon if we can wait until spring? I have three little ones I got from Rob's Violets a few weeks ago and I'm trying to baby them in hopes I can keep them alive. A couple of years ago I had some gorgeous Episcia's, AV's and Chirita's, I need to strive to do a little better with Gessies!
Nichole: I think I have the Mona Lisa lipstick plant. It's been hanging out on my front porch for over two years ... I moved it from the pool deck to the front of the house and should have left it in the screened area out back. Once I moved it, birds made a nest in the basket and the plant almost kicked the bucket. I've had birds nest in hanging baskets many times over the years and have had plants die because I can't bring myself to water when nests are in there. I'd feel so bad if I drowned the eggs/babies! I will have to get my step stool tomorrow and get it down to check it and I will take a picture. I have another lipstick plant hanging in the guest room and I can't remember the name ... it has never bloomed in the two years I've owned it (might help if I fed it once in awhile huh?) The tag is long gone but I think I remember it saying something pink, leading me to believe the flower may be pink (the reason I bought it.)
Nichole: LOL, I don't even know how many calls are left.
Well, I didn't end up going out of town today, I pulled a muscle n my back last night when I was moving plants onto the back porch out of the cold. It got down to 37º here last night!! I was supposed to go to Jaxonville, Florida today to attend a ceremony for a friend who is retiring from the Coast Guard but unfortunately my back isn't cooperating and even though it's only @ a 2 hour drive I can't comfortably sit that long.
I've been making Banana Nut Bread ... I have six mini loaves in the oven baking right now so I thought I'd check back in and was sure someone would have Bingo by now. Isn't it always like this at the end of a game though? There are probably a few people real close, needing just one or possibly two ... watching ... waiting for the next call.
I think you should tell what time you are going to post the next call. That way we sit at our computers like a group of crazed customers outside a store on day after thanksgiving. When door opens there is going to be a crush of keys for that Bingo. Half way serious! (He says with a gleam in his eye and saliva drooling at prospect of being first!!)
LOL, I know for sure it's not me either ... I need the last 3 calls that are left!
Tommie: I have a Mac laptop and just recently I found under the edit button in the menu at the top of the page ⤴ a section called "Special Characters". Unfortunately there aren't very many neat little character/icons to choose from.☹ Before my laptop crashed and I lost everything last year, I had a link to a website where there were tons of neat characters I could use. Now I have no clue how to find it again, the one's I've found are for PC's and are not compatible with Mac's. ☹
I am checking out for the evening.I know it's early, but worked all day and then physical therapy.I'm going to eat and go to bed.
Everybody check your cards and if anything else is called,I will see it in the am.
In order to be fair to everyone who played and after careful deliberation between Nicole and I,the final decision was to put all of those in the running for the losers prize in a basket and draw a name (done by my DH) who does doesn't know anyone here (or really know what's going on .)
The winner of the loser's prize is Phoebesviolets!!
Thanks to all who played and I hope everyone had as much fun as I did!!
You are so right Maria. Some really fun prizes are surprise boxes. They can be plants.leaves, tools, little ziploc bags of soil mixes, fertilizer, etc.,homemade items, back issues of plant magazines,seeds..There are so many choices and no one needs to spend a lot of money.
