Great to see this story retold. There is more. Beginning the year after the loss of Captain Herman Schuenemann and the Rouse Simmons, Captain Schuenemann's wife Barbara revived the Christmas ship and continued it for another 22 years. Lee Murdock, a chronicler, creator, and performer of Great Lakes songs has written a song about this bit of history titled "The Christmas Ship" It can be found on 3 of his recordings and there is a free mp3 version at his website (http://leemurdock.com/index.htm)

Thanks for sharing this, Aphthona. A folk song seems a very appropriate way to chronicle this story!
