    58 Days till Spring!!!!!!

    God's Cake

    Sometimes we wonder,
'What did I do to deserve this?' or 'Why did God have to do this to me?'
    Here is a wonderful explanation!
A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong, she's failing algebra, her boyfriend
broke up with her and her best friend is moving away. Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and
asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, 'Absolutely Mom, I love your cake.'
'Here, have some cooking oil,' her Mother offers. 'Yuck' says her daughter.
'How about a couple raw eggs?' 'Gross, Mom!'
'Would you like some flour then?
    Or maybe baking soda?'
    'Mom, those are all yucky!'
To which the mother replies :
'Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves.
But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake! '

God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult
times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just
have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful!

    God is crazy about you.
He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.
Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen.
He can live anywhere in the universe,
    and He chose your heart.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are
here we might as well dance!

Thanks everyone! I made this my mission to put SOMETHING together correctly, since I had all these scraps laying all over the table. It was just finding enough pieces of this and that to make 9 blocks that were the same. There is only one lavendar that is different in one of the blocks, but other than that, I used 20 different pieces for each plate, not counting the center piece. Helped reduce the 'swap and donated' pile, but now just smaller pieces LOL
Working on a heart project this morning, trying to just use stash and leftover stuff... straining my poor brain. LOL This is a quarter log cabin, made into a heart.

    Thank you one and all.
This is soo difficult as the reality sets in.

We moved permanently here to Fl. 2 years ago. We did have this place for over 20 years so it was the thing to do. I do not like this island living as it is very transient - people come and go. Winter we have the snow birds (such as we were) and in summer very busy with Floridians vacationing. Plus to do any shopping is always 1/2 + hour to get to Sarasota or Bradenton. So this January I accepted the fact that we are staying in the place because he was to have knee surgery, eye surgery. and this procedure for gall stone. So much was spared him with what happened but I am in a Pickle Jar - finances what they are have affected this household as well, then I have never lived alone. Just Chris and I was hard enough because there were always other people living with us.
So many decisions ahead of me which many of you have mastered in one form or another.
Again thank you every one Helene

And if you need to get a way for a bit or have visitors, ask out. I echo what the others are saying. Don't do anything but heal right now. I also strongly recommend that you call Hospice for a spouses support group. You're not the only one who is going through exactly what you are and will be. Believe me, you will find some solice, solidarity and, most important, not be alone with the support that awaits you there.

geeez... Thank you again all. I am not whining just want to share too because i learned other things here besides quilting

My DD's are coming to Fl. tomorrow - they are old enough to take over some of the planning. For here we thought service in the club house and lunch, as people he knew want a closure.
    Eulogy given by my DB.
He knew many and was loved by many and then up north Brewster NY where he was involved with soccer club and other things, fam, friends neighbors etc.etc. service and lunch at restaurant up North.

His motto was to make a friend every second day and he did, beach, pool and biking.
Europe it's customary to send a black framed cards with birth and death date's info. which we have to send to many of his remaining soccer friends and extended family.

Perhaps one of these days I'll share a bio. quite interesting as most of our lives are, if well lived, planned and with pebbles thrown into our paths. This is more than a pebble more like a boulder...Helene

54 years ago he still had his gogeous hair.
I much rather plan a wedding...

I know this may sound strange, Helene, but try and relax and enjoy the services for your DH. When Dad passed the pastor who gave the service knew Dad quite well and had many personal things to say. Others who came to the viewing and service had known him in very different capacities and shared thoughts and incidents that I never knew. It did me and my children good to hear how everyone loved Dad.

My one DIL even had it together enough to take flowers from the service and bring them home to dry. Then a friend of hers made a necklace made from beads made from those dried flowers. She gave me the necklace at Christmas.

As others have said, Helene, take your time to get use to the idea of being without your DH. I know that your daughters will be of comfort and help you make those decisions when the time is right.

There are so many options open to people today in retirement that it takes viewing all the options, reviewing your financing, and deciding where you want to live; not in that order. I knew I wanted to live near one or more of my boys so that narrowed the search to an area. I took my finances in to my local credit union where I am a member and they had someone who would review everything and tell me how much I could afford to spend as down payment and daily expenses. That was free! Then I knew when I looked it I could afford the place or not.

This cold spell is keeping my ears cold all the time.
Even the cats curl up in tight balls to sleep.

Need to get downstairs & fire up the long arm. I have 10 tops (not counting mine) that need quilted. If I had pellets, I might even fire up the stove in the basement. Luckily we did put heat vents in down there a couple years ago so it stays rather warm.

It is "stay in the house and move around a lot to stay warm" weather up here right now. I don't know how Karen in Michigan and all the other ladies in the central states manage to stay warm. Barb, you all had more than we have had this year. It seems to start with us and get worse as it travels east. We have had single digits and below 0, too. My bedroom is the warmest in the house so at night I gather my books, TV remote and the dog and climb in my warm bed.

I was in Lansing last week to close on the house. It went to a 22 yr old man that only brought a check for $1700 to the table with a loan of 4.75% interest and monthly payment of $305! I, on the other hand, brought a check for $27,000 to the table after having been making payments of $550 a month. Oh, well, it is done and gone and I don't have to worry about it any more. It was a shame though, it was a really nice house with new windows, siding, kitchen, bath and hard wood throughout. He got a steal!!!

Janice, I sure feel your pain. We have this place plus our home up north for sale. No bites on either one. If up north sells we will probably just strip this one and walk away. In a few month we won't even have a choice as we won't be able to pay lot rent here and will be evicted. We can live cheaper up north until it sells. This is a very nice mobile in a nice clean senior park. We have added a large room and made quality upgrades, but no one wants to pay more than 5 or 6 thousand. All we are asking is 20 and at that we will be losing 40.

Saying prayers for your place to sell for you, at price you need for no losses! SO hard to live in a mobile home park, as the lot rent is so expensive! When my Mom passed away, thier home was valued at $40,000.00, but we had to sell it at $10,000.00 just to get rid of it! The $450.00 per month lot rent was killing all of us, just to keep it there, plus the utilites we had to keep active, so things would not freeze.

Yes, we've all been hit by this recession. The thing that gets me is that none of us expected to get rich on our homes; just get a little out of the updates we put in and have someone take it that would love it like we did. Instead we are having to see our houses lay vacant or going to speculators at outrageous prices.
All my life I have always paid my bills on time even when money was really tight. I prided myself on having excellent credit. Then I had to stop making payments on the house to get the bank to even consider a short sale and now, even though I
have sold it, they show a reposition on my credit. Luckily, at my age I'm not going to buy anything big or, with Dad's money, I can afford to pay for things and so I don't need the credit. But most are not that lucky

You are right on Janice, We've never been wealthy but we were comfortable and have never had to struggle with bills. This is just a foreign concept to us. In the 7 years we have live here our lot rent has increased $200. It does include water, sewage, and trash pick-up so really isn't outrageous. But paying here and maintaining up north is simply beyond our means. We had always thought that would be what we would leave our children to enjoy. It's breaking our hearts to sell but we need to survive a few more years.

Karen I'm going to be in Detroit this week to stay with the grandboys. I found a quilt shop called Guildcrafters on W. 12 Mile near Royal Oak. Do you know the place? The pictures make it look amazing and I could get really lost in there for a while. I looked for some others but got them in Brighton and Howell. Have to look those up when I go to Lansing sometime.

Thank you Karen, not sure of your age and no need to tell, around fifty years ago we were going to relatives in Detroit, after dark, and there was a huge birthday cake all lit up with neon lights (I assume) and my guess was that it was probably a milestone for Ford motor company, do you recall that "cake"? Don't know why I never asked my parents, they're gone now, but I never forgot that.

Had a notice about this quilt show in NYC and thought that any of you who are near or planning on visiting there would like to know. It's billed as the largest Quilt show in NYC history.
    http://www.folkartmuseum.org./infinitevariety

Added: this is the article in the newsletter:

The Biggest Quilt Show in the History of NYC
How is that for a luscious quilt photo?
In case you haven't heard the news, there is going to be a once-in-a-lifestime show of quilts in Manhattan from March 25-31. There will be a display of 650 quilts at the Park Avenue Armory, all of them red and white quilts, all owned by one private collector. "Infinite Variety" is the name of the show, because no two quilt designs are identical.
There are many remarkable things about this upcoming show, not the least of which is that it will be FREE, thanks to the wealthy collector who wanted to share her unusual collection to celebrate her birthday (she's not saying which one). Also unusual is that the collector hired a cutting-edge design firm called Thinc to design the exhibit, a firm that has done Epcot pavilions and major museum shows in the past, and it won't look like any quilt show you ever saw.
You can read more about the press-shy quilt collector, Joanna Rose, in my column, The Skinny, in the February issue of Quilter's Home magazine.
But here's something you won't read there, because it happened just recently: I've been asked to moderate a public conversation about modern quilting at the Armory, between two members of Quiltopian royalty: Paula Nadelstern and Alex Anderson. Both are extremely wise, warm, and open, but come from different spheres of quilting. This will happen at 4 pm, Saturday, March 26. Although the quilt show itself is free, this event, followed by a reception and book signing, will cost $25. Be there or be...sorry.
You can find the address of the armory at the website of the American Folk Art Museum, which is working with Joanna Rose on the show.
    http://www.FolkArtMuseum.org.
And while you are at the site, look up my lecture and workshop at the Folk Art Museum itself(45 West 53rd Street) on Saturday, January 29. At 11 am, I'm giving a lecture called "What is a Quilt? And Why You Should Make One." In the afternoon, I'll conduct a beginners' workshop called Your First Quilt. If you know any beginners in the area, this will be a fun class.

Helene, I have just managed to get online and was deeply sadden to hear of your husbands passing. I agree with everything the others said earlier--take time for now. That was probably the best advice I received. My heart goes out to you anf your family and like everyone else, if I can be of any help, let me know.

We are going on adrenaline right now. We were told Wednesday it could be a day or if we are very lucky 2 months but the Hospice doctor doesn't think it will be that long. Mom has been told what is happening but that no conclusive diagnoises unless a biopsy. She said no. No time expectations have been discussed unless she has taked with the Hospice reps and we haven't been told. Sew dear friends, keeping working on your projects and if you have a second, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Im working on some daylily door prizes. Little wall hangings with sayings and pictures. The sayings are just screen printed on them and as careful as I thought I was being, the warm fabric has made one of my daylilies streak. Do you know if there is anything that I might be able to wipe that off the fabric with.

Thinking of you often Marion. Looking forward to seeing you in the next 'chapter'. I think and hope its under the heading of fun. I dont know whats with the VIRGOS having such a rough 6 ish year run...I know Im personally getting sick of it ;-o.
I know you just want your Mom to be pain free and comfortable. I think even at this age and in this circumstance, the saying "if mamma aint happy, nobody is happy", still fits. Maybe in a different way, but you get it.
    Blessings

Laura - it should come out to about 77 X 91 when it's finished. I'm putting a pretty wide border on it...Just the piecing alone would be 57 X 71... So I have a long way to go. Making the blocks for eadh row is time consuming but I can't sit and make ALL the four patch blocks or ALL the step block for the whole quilt at one time. I get too bored. This way I only make what I need for the next row...Silly perhaps but it works for me.

I thought they were easy enough for beginners (me)... quite a few Christmas and kiddie-type designs. I love the multi-pieced designs that are more detailed, but I like to whip out some easy ones that at the end of the day, I have a pile to look at and say "Wow, I actually got those blocks done!!" good grief! I wonder if he's tried the shelters to see if they have anyone to contact. Just read last nite on the Web about the sled dogs that were destroyed because the Sledding business that someone started after the Olympics went under and instead of trying to find a place for them, the guy just had them shot, not humanely either... I understand that finding homes for a large number of animals can be difficult, and they have to be fed in the meantime, but they saw this coming as the business declined. Just sickening...
It's probably a good thing I don't live on a big farm in the country, I'd want to take all of them in...

Same happens with Greyhounds in racing. I opted to not participate in the Pharmacology lab in Medical School when they used Greyhounds. I hope the horses find homes. I know that there are several rescue organizations in multiple states, but, as with dogs and cats, usually they are overwhelmed with local rescues.

Taters... One puppy is with a friend, one was bought by an AKC judge and we have the remaining 4. They're growing and being puppies. We've started taking them to class, getting them used to being on a lead and the show ring. Two are spit fires in the ring, one seems like 'well, I'm not sure what this is for, but they give me cheese if I walk' and the other, the smallest, is not so sure she likes being there. She's also the one that has her brothers on their backs submitting cause she's queen of the roost. All are healthy and have picked their favorite adult dog to play with and terrorize. Thanks for asking.

BTW... NO MORE PUPPIES till some of our elders have moved on. A baker's dozen and four puppies at one time is a bit of work. We've had a max. of two at a time with the boys and the others were the only puppy in the house when they joined us.

This week while doing the FabShopHop, I discovered Grandma's Attic offer a pack of 50 4" squares of odds and end remnants for $5. I thought of a 4 patch scrap quilt that I could practice my 'valueing' (I think it's called) into light and dark. Got the packs Thursday and played this weekend making sets of two 'light' and two 'dark' 4P blocks with the restriction on only using what came in the packs for them. Came out with thirty-something blocks that will finish to 7". Going to sew them into a top tomorrow, alternating brighter and less bright sets and hope to come out with an interesting scrappy through for the guest bedroom. I'll most likely need to border it as I don't think that I'll have enough in the sets to make it full enough for the size I want (oversized lap/Twin)------- I'm seeing what # blocks across and down I need as I place the blocks out. Glad I decided to do this. I wouldn't have considered most of the fabrics for projects, so I figured that I would wind up with a fairly ecclectic array. Prints I thought too bright and modern will blend in well when I put them surrounded by more muted colors. I want to wind up with a vintage-looking scrappy. We'll see. I'll post the front when done.

It is made of several different blocks. One is the four small blue squares. Then there are two different four patch squares, a square in a square, a plain square and triangles. The pattern comes about by the order in which the blocks are attached. I added the first border.
Edited to add that they are all 5 1/2" squares that finish at 5"...

Pam - Lay the diagonal along the seam line and go from there making sure the size you want is completely under the ruler. Cut the (right-handed) right side and top. Turn the square so the sides you just cut are on the left side and bottom. Now place the ruler again with the size block lined up with the edges that have been cut making sure the diagaonal is on the seam line and the size block is completly covered by the ruler and cut the right side and top again. Now you have a perfect square.

I was gifted with the border fabric and pulled the colors for the body of the quilt from it. I do wish I had used the border fabric as the center block for the stars. It would have pulled the design in a bit. But I do like it. Think it may be a raffle quilt for some organization that needs money...

Barefoot... I like to go with single fabric or large 'I have it and don't know what to do with it' picing in LARGE patchwork. I make the back to be used. I figure, the less sewing, the less chance for seam issues and wear at seams and the better stabilizing it is for the front. I have only done one reversable quilt.

Those are just gorgeous, T! I would make them into two quilts, too - they're too nice to hide either of them.

Don't agonize - just find a wide backing fabric that looks nice with the front and let your quilting be the design on the back. I love the marbles and tone-on-tones for this because you can really see the quilting. :)

Speaking only for myself, sometimes the issues is money. Buying a large single piece is more spendy than using up scraps. I was at JoAnn's with my 40% off coupon and spotted what I thought would be a great back for one my projects only to discover the 108 wide fabric didn't have enough yardage on the bolt! LOL... the only thing I wanted that wasn't already discounted and not eligible for the coupon! DRATS!

Well I guess I am "strange"...but I just don't care for one large piece of fabric...
I have done that with a few quilts, and do use one piece sometimes on crib quilts.
but most of the time I piece the reverse side...usually using some "leftover" blocks from the front side, leftover fabric pieces used on the front, and additional co- ordinating pieces as needed...

I had sometimes done the back side in one fabric...and I was usually not totally happy with the results...so I started piecing the backs, and I always like them ...

I usually can not find a fabric I like enough...to go with the design / theme of the quilt...that I think would be "good enough" to use on the whole back...

occasionally I find a "perfect" fabric for the backside...then I will do it in a few pieces...I have never done one with the extra wide fabric, that could do the whole back in one piece...never saw one I liked enough, that I could afford!!!

Barb, I did think about that...that is how the side I am now working on started...and that may be what I end up going with...?????

Thanks for the Joann's tips. I am always amazed on what I don't know about places I shop OFTEN. I did ask about the end of the bolt thing with extra yardage twice (half price on the remaining yardage if it's a yard or less) and once I was told, 'Well, I give it to you this time' on the fabric I was getting, but not on another that had a half a yard more on the end piece that they could sell at regular price. Another time I was told that they don't do that at that store.

the "rest of the bolt" is supposed to be for less than 1/2 yd. If it's 1/2 yd they will make a fat qtr from it.
Back in the "old days" when I was working at JoAnn's customers would pass up having someone else cut their fabric & wait for me. They knew I was a sewer/quilter & would cut their fabric straight.
Not all fabric is available for order, but a lot of the basics sure are.

I guess "my" JoAnns is better than some of the others. Never a problem with "end of the bolt" discounts. In fact I don't have to ask, they offer it. I know they have said on more than one occasion "we can order that for you". I'm also fortunate in that there are several within 25 miles or so and they are very accomodating about first checking on the computer and then calling to locate more of a fabric for me locally.

I was at the Joanns in San Antonio yesterday, and I was not happy with the store at all! They had one person at the cutting tables, and she was so slow. I too had several bolts, I told them I would take the little bit left, and she told me they don't offer that discount anymore! So I found thier sales paper at the front of the store, and took several of the 40% coupons, and gave the cashier one for each piece of fabric, and I got my discount that way. He never batted an eye when I handed him the coupons.

Never had an issue with them honoring multiple coupons even from the same flyer or combining flyer and computer coupons. They even try my 10% off card from Quilters of America after all is rung up to see if it qualifies for any additional discount (if I don't have a 20% off coupon off the total from a flier). Sometimes they'll say that only one coupon will work per order, but I ask them to try and they are always surprised that all the coupons are honored. There are times that my $ saved far excedes my $ spent. I had once bought $135+ merchandise for $58 after all the discount coupons and sale prices. I have to say that I really like my Joann's. It's where I learned to quilt and the people (for the most part) are really nice and helpful. I'll often bring in completed tops to show the fabric ladies as they always seem to be taken that a guy quilts and how much fabric I get and USE.

In the beginning was it hard to get service and be taken serious? When I was a teen, my Dad would send me to the service desk to pick up auto parts and I really had to learn to be assertive or they would comletely ignore me. Not sure if it's my youth or being female in a very male dominated field. I used to help my Dad in the shop, I always enjoyed the look of shock when I would stop sanding a car to respond to some customer coming in. I don't know a thing about car engines but I can spot a bad paint job or recognize a quality one.

When I go into a LQS for the first time or with staff that hadn't seen me in the shop before, I get side looks and asked 'can I help you' with an undertone of 'what are you doing here' a bit more frequently that I see them trying to help the ladies shopping. Not sure if it's 'he obviously doesn't know what he's doing' thoughtline or 'he's a guy in a quilt shop by himself, he must be up to no good' thoughtline. Did I mention that on the weekends when I do most of my LQS visits, I give my face a shaving break (I do no look homeless). Actually, when they find out I quilt, most are interested and ask me questions on how I got started, what type of patterns/quilting do I do, etc. I often get comments about fabrics I choose and asked how I'm going to use them. It's kind of fun... once they realize that I'm not there to pick up something for my wife or rob them.

Stu, I think I know exactly how you feel...I used to do a lot of wood work...and got those looks, when I would be looking at saw blades. Had many a salesman say "what kind of saw does your husband have?" I always got a kick outta telling them if my husband could even figure out how to turn one of my saws on...He would probably chop off a finger or two!!!! (not true of course..but was fun to say!) then I would get those other questions...what got you into wood work?? etc...

    Sondra...Great border !!
