Good morning everyone. Time for a move again. Can't have tired people staggering into the Tea Room.
Its a nice morning here. Cool but should warm later. It seems to be getting into real Autumn weather now. I already have one of my Belladonna "Hathor"bulbs out in flower. The others will follow shortly. There is another iris blooming now. I do hope they remember to flower again in spring.
Lots of green bulb leaves popping up everywhere. I must get out and tie up all the berries as they are growing madly. Lots of berries on the plants too.
The blood plums are done so its nectarine time now. I can stand under one of the trees and eat . They are very large this year due to the extra rain . Heaps of grapes on the vines , but I think the birds have them numbered to eat as they ripen. We have actually got lots of figs this year. Usually there is just one or maybe two that fall off. I hope these stay on and ripen. I love figs.
It seems the Orb spiders have packed up and left for parts unknown now. We won't see them until next year.
Kat, great to see you are okay up there. I love snakes. If you don't want him, send him down here. I would like to see him hanging around my window.
My son in Darwin, gets them too. He doesn't like that they eat the frogs though.
Hello to everyone else. I am off outside to tidy up my mess from clipping around the paths yesterday. Have a happy day.
    Jean.

oh dear, that is all I seem able to do this last week.
Working nights is not good for me.
It is my day off today & all I want to do is sleep & there are so many things that need doing!
At least I worked up the energy to walk Copper, he missed out big time yesterday.
No walk & no dog club, hubby dropped me off & I had to ask for a lift home with one of the other instructors.
Can't do that when I have Copper as I think that is asking a bit much.
Hubby went to an open day at Wigram - used to be the Airforce Base here but now only the museum & small original part of the base remain.
the rest was sold off as housing development.
Low cloud meant the Rude Chickens couldn't fly...
oops - I mean the Red Checkers display team.
But the Iroquois helicopter display was apparently 'awesome'
and he enjoyed looking at the static displays - years ago hubby was in the ATC & volunteered to help on the restoration of the Museum's Avenger.
Guess where we had our wedding photos taken?
Good thing I like aviation history as well...

I was thinking some of them looked they were taken at an airfield.

I'm guessing we probably shouldn't ask what was under the kilt? hehehe

Lovely photos, Dalfyre, but isn't the groom a little young? lol! (looking at first photo) Are you the original cougar? ROFL

Hopefully there are some pictures attached. The first should be the white ginger, then the spicy ginger which has had four bracts flowering and I only think to take a photo when it's on its last gasp, then the view out the back window to the back garden, then the front window.

Good morning everyone. Lovely morning here. Yesterday was warm and fine . Same for a few days they say. I love autumn weather and the sight of lots of little green leaves poking up from the autumn bulbs. Naked ladies are running everywhere but I only have the one belladonna Hathor out as yet. Had a very nice feed of nectarines yesterday. Once they start to ripen, its a mad rush as they all want to ripen at the same time. One can only eat so many. The birds, oddly enough, never worry too much about eating them. They make a mess of the plums and grapes but maybe don't like nectarines much.
The lack of summer heat is good for the brugs, they are standing up very nicely. Lots of lovely green leaves and buds.
Nice to come in and see all your photos Kat. I love the jungle look. Are there any tigers in there ? Looks like heaven for the turkeys and snakes.
Hello Chrissy, Butterbomb is nearly out. I'll post pics when it opens .
Teresa, lov d the pics. Beautiful wedding . The bride looks very lovely. What was under the kilt ????
Hello Pam, Dianne, Karen and Sue.
Anthony we are over here, can you hear us. You will have fun with your new seeds later.
Time i moved and checked on whats doing this morning around the garden. I have 2 small lavenders to move so had better get to it before it warms up.
Hello Louise and Charleen. I hope the furry friends all had a nice treat for Valentines Day.
Have a happy day and try some Cream Puffs with your cuppa.
I always think of Leisa and Brian when I put these out. Didn't they love the cream ? .

    Chrissy,
I'm with you. A group hug is certainly in order. Consider yourselves hugged!!!!

What a year 2010 was and the beginning of 2011 too!
Hope that everyone, (partners, kids, uncles, aunts, cousins, grandies, etc), are on the mend. Gosh, illness and its consequences can drain even the most hardy.
Your gardens are looking wonderful not to mention how very yummy your tasty offerings are also. Thank you.
It is Tuesday morning about 11.am. and the humidity is 90% & rising, temp 26C...need to shower every few of hours just to feel clean...think that I am over Summer this year...can't wait for feel of sox on feet, rug over ageing knees, reading a good book.

Our flat/unit/arpartment is now on the market and we need a buyer pronto. I have been told that we not going to live in the Souther Highlands now! (this was a lifelong wish of mine, never to be). Astonishing...the scales are never balanced with these Librans. However, we are apparantly staying around the Central Coast...pity.
My balcony garden is beginning to 'brown' a wee bit. The gardens around the huge apartment blocks are beginning to show that summer is about to end and the new buds waiting to bloom.
It makes me angry & disappointed that we owners pay such huge levies only to have the gardens tended, (I use that word advisedly), by folk who have little knowledge and less interest. We have a line/row of 18 Lilly Pilly that is riddled with pests, etc. Not to mention the other flowers, shrubs and trees that niether compliment the bricks and motar nor 'do 'anything for the appearance to create an ambience. Unable to say anything to the Executive Committee who 'run' the Body Corp. for fear of retribution...they really believe that they are running the country instead of several home units. I recall something about 'how the mighty have fallen'...wish that they would...not far...just a stub of the big toe would suffice...lol Oh, give me my own garden once again.

A wee bit of advice please...for inspection of our home I need a nice, smallish plant to place inthe centre of our small outdoor table...not too expensive and 'now''..cannot wait for it to grow, take on, or whatever. I seem to have lost confidence when I go to nurseries. I used to be able to tell the difference between 'good' and 'not so good...but with potential'...now, well...maybe I am having senior's day today. We had friends to lunch on Sunday and one of them brought with her a gift of a most beautiful bright magenta cyclamen/man? I have never had one of these plants before and do not know what they like/dislike...
    Await advice.
    Keep healthy, keep smiling, ...

It needs to go outside at night Anna.
Water it only if it droops a little and only from below (sit in saucer of water for an hour or two then drain the pot).
Most people kill these with love.

I think a nice succulent would be good out there.
Find info on your lovely new plant here ...

Good luck with everything perhaps you may have a little garden when you move.

It's light sprinkles here so hopefully the plants are sighing with relief (like I am).
    Can't do anything out side.
I wonder what kind of Autumn we will be in for?
I haven't seen a blowfly this Summer very strange don't you think?
Lots of cicadas though, I remember the years when there were none of those.
I haven't heard one cricket (the first time ever)
Of cause the ever present mozzies are always there.
The other thing strangely missing is all the ants ...not one has come inside and there are a lot less outside.

I am surrounded by market gardens and sometimes I wonder what they may be spraying on the vegs, or is it the weather?
Any one else noticing strange critter behaviour?
I use no poisons here ...just noticing some odd stuff going on out there.

On to happier subjects ...Love being able to cook again :-)
Can't eat anything in the big heat.
Hey Jean you can start the next Brug thread with shots of Butter Bomb when it blooms, I am so looking forward to your reaction.
Hi Charleen and Loise we are over here! ...Coooo-EEEE!
Loving the pics everyone and don't we have some very clever people here.

    Hi Chrissy,

So pleased that you are almost back to a 'normal 'diet. Cannot eat in this awful heat either. Spend most of time not thirsty...a good sign of dehydration...a worry...we had our first roast dinner last night in about 4-5 weeks and it was lovely if I do say so myself. after chomping on lettuce leaves for that time I could have eaten a horse and chased the rider...well, almost...
Thanks for the info re cyclamen and pot plant. Prompt reply indeed.

We have had a cacophany of noise from the cicadas again this summer. Thought that after last summer, when could only speak in the bathroom, (only quiet room in the house), that they would need 7 years to 'regroup'. Ants...well, 9 floors up and we have hundreds!
They are in all cupboards, armies of them running around the floors & walls etc...wee black ones...endless...have treated them to lots of beer, honey and dissolved sugar left strategically in containers... works a treat. Mind you, having to clean out cupboards all the time does not impress.
    and
found a wee cricket languishing on the kitchen floor last night, picked him up, gently placed him outside on a branch...sweet thing...do not where he came from. However, no blowies, just a few small, black flies in the heat of the afternoon and a few mozzies. Strange indeed. Are there moths around? Not many here on the coast...or are they hungrily eating my wardrobe from the past 15 years? Secretly hope so as I could do with a few new clothes for winter, at least.
Jean, your garden is profilic! Nectarines & grapes...I adore them but they are now ķut of season here according to all the markets.
    Will drop in again shortly

it's funny that everyone seems to comment on the kilt hubby wore.
He didn't go traditional - bit concerned about the weather in June!
We had a stunning winter's day - frosty start & a freezing wind but the sun shone & it was bitterly cold out on the old runway.
It was pretty cool inside the Air Force museum too but I really wanted pics in front of the Avenger & on the steps of the Dakota.
The distant scenery is the Port Hills - starting to get a bit built up in places, when I first moved here there were very few houses on the hills & strict regulation to keep them under control.
Things have changed since then & developments have encroached into the view.

Hi everyone. Some rain going on here. I have been playing out in the carport with some Tillandsias. I love those air plants.

Oh ants! They are dreadful here. Yesterday they came pouring out of the corner of the wall by the gazillions and were heading for the kitchen bench. Others in the bedroom, others in the lounge. Its a never ending war as they live in the walls. The ground outside is always on the move with them too.

And butterflies. I have never seen so many butterflies in such a small space as my back yard. The usual common crows, blue triangles, orchid swallowtails, common jezebels, the 'dead leaf' butterflies, and a few unknown surprises from time to time. They are truly magical creatures. Surprisingly, the one common butterfly I do not see here is the Monarch. Strange, that.

Good morning everyone. A lovely morning here. warm, no wind and none of the predicted thunderstorms as yet.
Yesterday was the same but a bit humid. Not usually humid here but I can live with it.
Chrissy, I always used to watch Jackie French on the garden shows. Very sensible lady. Thanks for posting that very interesting article.
Hubby laughs at me as I can eat whatever the weather. I don't overeat, but I like my food. He says I would have a roast dinner in the biggest heatwave.
Hello Charleen, You should teach Charley how to find us then you wont get lost.
Hello Anna. Chrissy is right, a succulent is a great plant for a quick decoration. See if you can find a plant of the large rosette type , then just pop a rosette or two in a small pot. It will look well grown and give you a plant for later as well. They root so easily and look great.
Hello Marlene, so glad to hear that Fred is coming along much better. Hope your daughter gets well quickly too.
Talking of insects, I well remember when I was travelling across the north of Australia , having to have a good supply of baby powder. Ants!!!!! They were everywhere. I was amazed at how quickly they take over anything . I would have to get out of the car as soon as I stopped and spread the powder around the wheels of the car to stop the little b***s getting in. As soon as a chair hit the ground they would be up it so one had to be quick with the powder.
I was using ant powder at first, being a newbie to the place, but a caravan park lady said baby powder works as well. It does too.
We have hardly any cicadas in this area . Sometimes you may see one. No noise though. I grew up with their sounds in Melbourne. Loved them. No crickets here either. Lots of other bugs .
Karen, you mention butterflies. I have never seen so many in the garden as this summer. White, black & white and the lovely Monarchs. Most have gone now except for the white. There were so many that you had them landing on you whenever out in the garden. Even with all the insects we do have, the garden thrives. I think because of the variety of plants and all the different small ecosystems . Lots of birds too. I never worry about a few holes here and there in leaves . I like to see the various insects wandering about. I do spray if there are too many in one place, like the tips of my brugs.
Better get out and see whats going on around the garden this morning. I am watching Butterbomb, Chrissy. Nearly out. I also have buds on my Formosa Lilies I grew from seed.
Hello to everyone else. Louise, Sue, Teresa, Colleen and Anthony.
Have a great day. Here are some tasty Apple Cinnamon Turnovers for you.

Good morning everyone. It's lovely and cool and fresh after a humid day yesterday with an almighty thunderstorm at about 2pm. I've never heard thunder so loud as I have this year. It sounds as though it's right on the roof. Cameren is going to be an SRC for his grade 2 class for 2 terms this year. An SRC is like a Prefect and helps other kids and tries to set an example for them. I'm not holding my breathe about that though. lol. He is relishing his room by himself and lines all his cars and shoes etc. up in neat little rows on his shelves. Everything has a place so he knows where it is. Branden isn't so houseproud but he's not too bad. They're still doing their chores without much prompting and line up for their pocketmoney. Branden is a bit behind in the money stakes as he's not as keen about the chores, but I'm hoping that when I take them to buy their games or whatever and he hasn't quite enough because he hasn't worked so hard that the penny might drop. We'll see. Hope everyone is feeling better. Dianne hope hubby is on the mend and Marleneanne glad to hear the Fred is getting better and best wishes to all. Will be back later. Colleen

Karen I hope your shoulder gets better soon...so inconvenient for you..

Jean...I hope your son didn't have any property damage during that storm they had in Darwin.

Charleen...DG has been doing some odd things lately...re the threads...you have to search for some of them...they must be doing some work on the site...maybe...that's probably why you are having a prob finding us.

So many other things to comment on...Egypt..now what will happen to the other middle eastern countries? troubling times ahead.

Colleen, your boys sound as if they are doing ok with their pocket money...good idea to let Branden find out for himself the value of his money...Congrats on Cameren being chosen for SRC...pat on the back for you...will be in touch soon.

Its good to hear things are improving all round. I see a cyclone is headed for Darwin (so far). I hope it fizzles out. There has been enough damage already this year.

Had xrays done, but doc cancelled today's appointment. Next Wednesday. Suits me, I'm about doctored out. Still, I'd like to get this shoulder settled. Have a feeling it will just be more pills though.

Garden is very happy today, nice rain, not too little, not too much. The air smells fresh this evening too. I like that.

There was a lot of thunder and lightning around yesterday in the late afternoon and evening. We had just one teensy shower of rain. About 4 miles from here, one of our neighbors had a real downpour that overflowed all his gutters.
We can stand outside and watch the rain falling elsewhere. Very frustrating.
Hello Dianne, lovely to see you back. Hope all goes well now., Your rose is lovely. Mine lives at the back of the garden where she can just grow. I never prune her at all. She does have quite a nice light perfume.
Hello to everyone else. Anthony, you can't leave us as we love to see all your liliums and hear the news on what you are doing.
Just keep an eye out for my signs when I move us. It is easier for those on dial up as the threads do get long.
Better get going. I usually do all the banking online before we leave so must get to it.
Have a great day and try this Chocolate Cake with your cuppa.

Good morning everyone. Overcast and like a misty fog everywhere here. Lovely and cool, in fact a bit nippy. Glad to hear everyone is on the mend. Shoulders and knees ahhh they hurt don't they? I've had a crook knee since 2003, 2 ops and still no better. All it was ,was a torn cartilidge and a botched op. I can't kneel on it or bend it properly and boy do I cop it when there's rain around. Enough whinging. I'm in my glory at the moment with all the brugs doing their thing and some of the cacti too. You should smell my yard first thing in the morning. Anyway here's another pic of Riverland Frosty Pink doing her thing. Colleen

Oh, working again. Tried to get in earlier but something went wrong. Seems to be fine again now though.

Doubt I'll be getting any new plants this fortnight. Did some unexpected spending in other areas. Also ordered a Leonard Cohen oldie CD. Anyone else a fan of his?

Finally the patch I poisoned is dying. I obviously didn't saturate some of the leaves enough and they objected, but are now rallying again. Will have to get it done again as soon as the weather allows, before the growth all slows down for winter. I so want the area cleared so I can start my bromeliad garden.

Colleen, would love to smell your garden in the mornings. Sometimes when I walk early, I can smell the trees that line the streets. Once the traffic has started up though, there's only fumes left to smell. Have you ever tried acupuncture for joint pain? Finding a good acupuncturist is the hard part.

Marlene, would love to join you for a cuppa. Something harder might be better. Had a session with Telstra earlier which left my nerves jangled (putting it mildly). I got cut off the first 2 times, then I got so upset because the third woman was really trying but I just couldn't understand her accent. Just gave up in the end.

Life can be very challenging. I'm up to the challenge though. So long as I can have a rest and recover.

Yes Karen I did try Acupuncture. It lasted about 2 hours then the pain was back. I don't think that the relief was worth the pain of the needle going into the sore spot. I join you when I talk to Telstra workers. They're hopeless aren't they? I don't think Telstra wants us to phone up about anything. I'll join you for that cuppa now thanks. a pic of Cameren who lost the 2 top front teeth at school yesterday. 1 came out naturally and he thought that he would give the other a bit of help. Colleen

Good morning everyone. Its dark here this morning. Time daylight saving was turned off for the year. I think it is left too late here.
It was a strange day yesterday. Low flying clouds or misty rain around the hills. Very humid over in Hamilton but no rain until we were on the way home. We had one short shower of about 10 points then nothing. Lots of rain elsewhere around the district.
I found no orphans to bring home. The table was full of daisies and a few lavenders , none of which I need now.
I am in orphan withdrawal. Next time maybe.
Chrissy, Butterbomb is nearly open, I'll start the new brug thread then.
I have another flush coming on Frosty.
Lots of new shoots around the garden. I must dead head the roses again as they are going beautifully. I have some grasses that I put in where the roses used to be. they are stating to get to look like clumps now. When the dwarf kniphofias grow amongst the grasses it should be pretty. I also have liliums, dutch iris and salvias around there too.
Lots of weeds sneaking about. I need to Roundup again.
Hello Colleen, your brug is gorgeous. .
Hello Marlene, nice to see you back , hope all is going well for you.
Hello Karen, don't mention Telstra to me either. *****&&&%%$$^&*** is all I can say.
Hello Pam, aren't I lucky, I don't like milk, so never have to bother. I only keep powdered milk for cereal, cooking etc . hubby likes it. My kids were reared on it too. So much easier , not to mention cheaper than other milk.
Hello Charleen, how are Charley and friends. looking forward to sunny spring I bet.
Hello Louise, I hope you an fHank are enjoying some sunny weather too.
you will be thinking of NH by now. Pats for the girls ( oops, sorry, young ladies)
Hello Anthony. I do love those pretty liliums of yours. Such colors.
Hello to anyone else out there. Pop in for a chat.
Kat, Sue, Teresa . hope you are well.
Better see whats out in the kitchen for you all.
Here we are, always yummy, Blueberry Muffins.

Pam, nothing worse than not having milk for a cuppa, especially that first one. Hope you have it by now.

Charleen, I hope that internet sorts itself out in a hurry. We need you here!

Colleen, I think acupuncturists vary a lot. But the one I had believed the more it hurt, the quicker you got better. He used bigger needles to ensure it was so, and in all honesty, he cured me of life long migraines. Took a year but was well worth it to be pain free. Doctors could only offer morphine.

Chrissy, I am always fearful of getting bitten in the garden. I don't know what white tails look like, but I have some suspicious looking fellows around here. Luckily I don't get redbacks, but I seem to breed the biggest daddy long legs you ever saw. But its the monsters that come into the house through the smallest cracks that give me the horrors.

Kids are so cute when they go through the various stages. Been a long time since there were any kids in my family - the youngest grand daughter is now 15 going on 25. Not fair when I'm still only 30...ish...and a bit. It isn't age that makes you old, its remembering how old the grand kids are.

Hi Jean. Yes, the days are getting shorter, I've noticed. Soon be Autumn. I love Autumn - my favourite season of the year. Beautiful golden days, the plants rushing to have that last flowering. Not so hot. Just glorious.

Nice and sunny here today. The garden waste man is coming to take the bag away so I can fill it all up again. Hope everyone has a great day.

    Karen

Awe give him a snuggle for me Charleen, I bet he is glad Spring has Sprung.

It feels like Autumn here Grey and drizzling, heavy rain overnight, mornings are getting darker, days shorter.
    I love it!
I really have to ask what happened to Summer though, it was washed and blown away ...I could just about count on my fingers how many sunny days we have seen here in my area.
I suppose if we have to lose one season Summer suits me, can't do heat.

About the spiders we mainly have Golden Orbs and the Saint John's Cross spiders, I admire their beautiful webs. Yes lots of pretty nasty ones too but luckily they seem not be as plentiful as the friendly ones, the Daddy Long Legs are not true spiders.
here take a look (I hope this works)

    http://www.csiro.au/resources/White-tailed-spiders.html
    http://insects.about.com/od/noninsectarthropods/f/daddylongl...

Good luck with the Round Up ...it does a good job and it is the only thing I use that isn't organic but I am very careful when I do use it. In Summer it is almost impossible to use because we have a sprinkle or rain every day.
My garden is always much tidier in drought!
So the Sun flares are disturbing radio waves and satellites, that may explain some strange happenings with the various modern things we so depend on these days.
    More coming hmmmm.

When we moved here we swapped the fragrance of car exhausts for the scent of manures.
    I know which one I prefer. :-)
I hope everyone is looking forward to nice soupy/stewy times in Autumn, I have taken out my crockpot.
    Bring it on!
    Have a great day!

I love spiders, we had a golden orb web spider outside our laundry window & a Huntsman in my bedroom in Brisbane.
We get white tails here - only spider I target for death as they are not native & eat other spiders...
apparently there are Huntsman spiders here too - blew in from Aussie but very isolated breeding colonies.
Shame as I would love another one as a pet.

Good morning everyone. A wild and woolly night last night. After a day of drizzle all day, it blew a gale during the night and is still very windy out there, with a little rain.
I love the rain but I don't know about the wind. I never have liked wind.
all this talk of spiders. Huntsmen as pets ??/
Teresa, I can send you as many as you want. big ones too. If annoyed, they will stand up at you, but don't have the large fangs of some of our other ones.
I don't mind spiders outside, but I'll kill them all inside. We haven't seen any whitetails for a while. I think as they seem to be inside houses, maybe putting the insect bombs in the house each year , has wiped them out. I certainly hope so. I see the odd redback outside but no problem with them. They will hide rather than bite.
Daddy long legs are a pest. They can whip up webs everywhere overnight.
I won't be doing much outsidetodaye. Maybe in the greenhouse for a while.
Hello Anthony. You must be completely surrounded by your lovely liliums now. They will be so beautiful next season. Lots of prizewinners again.
Teresa, perhaps you should remane NZ to Jerry Lee Lewis land . There is "a whole lot of shakin' goin' on "
Hello Charleen, your first sign of spring with that little lily. Charley looks very huggable there.
Hello Karen. You should try putting the insect bombs in your place. It may help stop the creatures. We hardly get any inside now and this is a creaky old place with lots of gaps too.
You will know whitetails as they have a longer, thinner pointed shape of a body with the white on the tail. ( not always the white mark either)
Hello Chrissy, I am just off outside to see if the weather has affected Butterbomb. Hope to get better pics.
Hello everyone else out there. Enjoy your weekend.

    Hi everyone.

Chrissy, thank you for the links. Looks like my suspicious spider is not a white tail, and they don't mention them this far north, so maybe we don't get them. Hope not. They seem to be a very nasty critter.

Teresa, I always thought NZ was spider free. Or was it snake free? Now I'm confused.

Charleen, that Charley Boy looks like a real character. Very huggable too.

Anthony, sounds like you are going to have some beautiful photos to show us in the future.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend. Going to be a very hot one, so they say. I may go hibernate if it gets too bad.

Jean, I'm with you. Spiders and I cannot live in the same house. If I can get them out, I will, otherwise they get sucked up the vacuum cleaner.

I had a very large huntsman spider (Ludolph) and a carpet snake (Wriggly) as pets when I was four. (We also had a cat, chooks, snake-necked tortoises which we used to take for walks on string..one sister lost one by taking it down to the river bank and it was too strong..we also had tame possums we could feed and pat) My (very prim and proper) gran was visiting and put the spider in his home in the sun as she thought he would like it but he cooked. I was very upset. The snake eventually went to Lone Pine animal sanctuary as an elderly neighbour was totally freaked out by him..and us having him (he was in a large cage and we could open it to feed him and touch him)..so, I have never fitted the 'scared of things' mould either..but one of my sons has always been freaked by an type of spider but totally is unaffected by snakes..even had one fall out of a cupboard in the kitchen while he was cooking when he was about eight..and he just put everything back in the cupboard..including the curled up snake..the second time it happened, the snake moved its head and he realised it wasn't a toy..but still didn't freak. It had been curled up napping and as the day warmed up it started to 'undo"..another time he was sitting under a palm tree with a chook on his lap and a snake just dropped down at his feet. Both of these were at least two metres long...but a tiny spider? No way!

My daughter is not fond of wildlife. When the kids were younger we had an enormous python come in the house and was just lying across the back verandah room floor..I had to step over it to get in and out of the kitchen but the older kids were up on the dinner table! Lol! We've had a few snaky visits like that..usually quite comical getting them out, especially when they get under the stove!

It's going to be hot and humid here for the next few days! Take care everyone!

    Good morning everyone.
Lovely rain all day yesterday. Still very cloudy and sprinkling, but at least the wind has eased off. I can just hear all the weeds growing . After all the wind the night before, our poor nectarine trees are all broken with the weight of so much fruit. The fruit trees will all have to be cut right back this year. A job for hubby and his chainsaw. I have never seen trees with so much fruit. At least we get a good feed along with the birds. I had to cut a large branch off one of the nectarines already a sit was weighing down on the shadehouse. We are still watching the figs and hoping for them all to stay on the trees and ripen. I have another belladonna 'Hathor"out. beautiful flowers. There are still quite a few flowers out despite the wind. I had to go down and tie up my poor brug Butterbomb as she had such big heavy flowers , they had nearly tipped her over.
I have flowers on some of my tillandsias which is great as I thought they would take along time. Flowers and pups on the broms too.
I may be able to get out and tidy up a bit today if the rain holds off. The paths need clearing again. I must move a lot of the spider plant from the paths. They look nice but send out so many new shoots , I am forever cutting them back.
Hello Kat. I don;t mind the snakes but no spider is going to live inside the house. I do like to see them out in the garden though. Fascinating creatures. How are your turkeys ? Didn;t get washed away in the floods at all ?
Charleen, Charley looks impatient to have his turn in the dust. They will love having Spring back at last.
Hello Karen. Those rhinoceros beetles always intrigued me as a child. We used to pick them up and carry them around.
Hello Chrissy, Anthony, Dianne, Marlene and Teresa. Elaine, hope you are well too.
I'm off to see whats going on outside.
    Have a lovely day .

    >Are you all going into fall Now??

We call it Autumn in these parts Charlene, and it officially starts next month. It's the best time of year for getting things done in the garden in these parts (south eastern Queensland.)

It turned out our fridge has died, so we're off to buy a new one today . The freezer is still working fine, so it beats me. Once we worked that out we simply divided the (new) bottle of milk into cup-sized containers and popped them in the freezer, and just pull one or two out at a time.

You can have all our spiders and snakes if you like, Kat. We get yellow-faced whip snakes, which really tend to mind their own business, so I've had to work hard to get hubby to leave them in peace when he finds them. I think he worries about our little dogs, but the whip snakes are so retiring I think they'd be gone well before the dogs spotted them. It's the eastern browns that worry me, as they tend to be quite aggressive. We get what I think is marsh snakes too - they do a lap of the dam and pick off the little frogs. grrrr! Hubby has tried to net them a couple of times, but they're very quick, Best left alone, methinks.

Enjoy your day all, looks like another stinker in the making here.

Yes, Pam..definitely a stinker coming up! It's only 10 o'clock and hot and humid already..cicadas are going mad!

Our fridge needs new seals and door hinges but hubby gets so mad at it that I bought a new one in January..just had to wait till new stocks came as they gave me a better model at advertised price as they were out of stock and it was the day after the catalogue sale ended anyway! So, as I like the old one and I think it's just icing up because of the seals and hinges (as that is the only spot it ices), the new one can be kitchen and old one can be laundry spare (with attention from mobile seal and hinge service!)

You can have your eastern browns but we get the yellow-faced whip tails and the dwarf crown snakes here too..cats used to bring them in but the museum told me, even though they are poisonous, they aren't aggressive (as you said) and their fangs are right back in their mouths, so they would have to latch right on to a little finger or something small to do any damage. I just wish the carpet snakes would become vegetarians and we could be very good friends then! I have noticed there aren't that many turkeys around at the moment...either the whopping big snake has devoured them, or someone is disposing of them or relocating them. I've seen a few and a few babies but not the hordes we usually have. I'm not complaining, mind you, just observing. It's hubby's birthday and he got a nerf gun (very soft sponge "bullets") and I suggested he could scare the turkeys away but not shoot them. He shot us instead!

Too hot to garden today..but we are helping middle son deliver furniture to his new place. Had a bbq with eldest, daughter, yesterday so I guess when they have all gone, there will be places to visit (though, knowing youngest, he will be overseas somewhere!) Have a good day all and stay cool!

Hello all! I shouldn't be reading this thread with all the talk of huge spiders and venomous snakes right before bedtime...eek! I'm just not a fan as you all tend to be. One very frightening situation with a poisonous snake when I was a small child affected me forever.

I spent the morning upgrading my phone to an iphone and then trying to figure out how to set it up. Amazing technology out there these days. It will make our travels quite a lot easier, as it is much easier to use and has much better directions than I had before.

It's beginning to get so warm and dry here that my annuals are drying out pretty fast. We've had wonderful green beans from my patio pots though, and the puppy girls LOVE them as treats right off the bushes. As Charleen said, Spring is here in this area, and I hear the snow is mostly beginning to melt up in New England. Time is just flying by here.

Jean, I see you've been baking again! How DO you find the time??? lol Have you adopted any orphans lately?

Charleen - love the photos of Charlie...he's such a cool dude!!

Tonight I think I'll tuck in early since I have a few good books to crack open. Hope you are all enjoying your day!

    Welcome aboard Tanzen...
I always liked snakes & spiders as a child, used to catch spiders & chase my poor little brother around the house with them.
Don't have to worry about snakes here, just shakes ;)
I have spent the day at dog club stewarding for the Championship Obedience tests.
It was good weather, not too hot/cold. A bit windy but we finished before it became too much of a problem.
Next week I will be helping out with Rally-obedience as well as competing.
Fingers crossed that we can get the final Qualifying certificate to give the mad dog his Novice title.

    Afternoon all...
What a windy day yesterday was...had to laugh when a baby's wading pool went flying by and rolled up the hill...that wind was so strong,
I always worry about my grafted flowering gums on windy days...the 2 on the nature strip really take a pounding...The council planted them when the estate was new and they won't replace them because of the cost...I think that our street is one of the few that is totally flowering gums left...I can't get used to calling them Corymbias...it's as bad as the Michelias now being Magnolias..The next generation will probably change them back..

Welcome Tanzen...your input should be interesting...I love Hoyas too...I have a new one H.macgillivrayii about to flower for the first time..

Charleen, your pics of the Longears are great as usual...hope that you and Louise have a lovely, gentle Spring...after the weather both of our countries have had in recent times...

Thank goodness Autumn is almost here...though this year Summer has been notable by it's absence...nothing is burn't..The Camellias are about to flower and Sweet pea and Cineraria seedlings are popping up everywhere.

Anthony, you will be worn out by Autumn...lucky that you have an obliging Nana who has green fingers...

This Stephanotis just gets better each year and the perfume is wonderful.

    How is business ?
We love Hoyas too, maybe not so much the snakes though some are ok even beautiful.
    Welcome.
You didn't bring any into the tea room did you?

No snakes in NZ you learn something every day? you know I knew that Ireland was snake free but NZ?

Hey Dianne do the stephanotis smell like tropical hyacinths to you?
    Lovely aren't they.

Sleep tight Loise what with all that snow I don't think any munchers or stingers will get you,
I am surprised anything survives it.

Good luck with the fridge Kat, they sure have to work hard in this heat.
The Cicadas sang all night here around 29C.
We won't even talk about day temps.
Roll on Autumn ...if we missed Sunshine this Summer then so be it.
    The steam is a shocker.

Have a rest Anthony ...believe it or not everything will still be there tomorrow.
Something I have had to learn the hard way recently.
Waving to all our busy gardeners out there.

Good morning everyone. The kettle's on . Just popping in for a quick cuppa and I'll be on my way. Great to see everyone is getting back to good health. I have a friend of Brian's coming to have a look at the garden and have a cuppa with me. Firstly I have to get the boys off to school and then go shopping and back home by 10.30. Have had a little sickie again over the weekend. His teeth again. I think we're in for a long few years of second teeth coming through. I had to take him to the DR on Saturday morning because he has an infection in his gum and his poor little face is all swollen. Off to the dentist as soon as I can with him and try to get this sorted for him. Well will get going as have quite a bit to do. Will be back later. Colleen

Good morning everyone. Cold here again this morning. It seems that every morning has been cold for so long, even when we had a few hot days. I got nothing done yesterday due to showers every time I ventured out. I did see the sun for 5 minutes.
I have seedlings to pot up and fertiliser to throw around.
Oh well, it will get done eventually. Hubby says we are in for about 30C this week. I told him he was dreaming, but then , you never know. I would move to somewhere that has at least a semblance of summer if I could win Lotto.
The garden is lapping up all the rain, but does need some sunshine to bring things out.
I actually found 2 zinnias growing out the front. This from about 6 packets thrown around. I have lots of different hollyhocks coming up in little peat pots. I hope they don't disappear when I plant them later in the year. The lemon bottlebrush is flowering. Poor thing, it usually only flowers in spring.
Hello Tanzen, welcome to our Tea Room. Watch out for the python out the back. It came from Kats place and I like to see him out there. You have an interesting job, handling all our snakes. We have copperheads and tigers here mainly. I know they are around , but one never gets to see them these days with all the growth around for them to hide in. I keep water dishes on the ground for the snakes and lizards. I always make sure that I make a noise when I am around the garden and never dive my hand in anywhere. Its not so much the snakes but the 8 legged creatures I don;t want to meet too closely.
Hello Chrissy, hope your brother is doing well. My brugs are looking good and soon I will have more flowers.
Hello Anthony. Keep up the good work with your liliums. We do enjoy seeing them as they flower. Chrissy is right, we do need to remember to rest instead of trying to get everything done now.
Hello Pam, good luck with the new fridge. We bought ours and the freezer, a few years ago. Hubby wanted to hang on to his ancient one , but one couldn't fit anything in it.
Hello Dianne, lovely creeper. Your roses are looking well here. I really must get out and deadhead again.
Hello Louise, its nice to hear that you are getting some good weather. I hope all is well with your NH place after the winter snow.
    Hugs for the darling girls.
Charleen, give Charley and friends the biscuits I left out for them. Nice to see you are getting to enjoy some sunshine. Teresa, I hope all goes well for you with your training and the rally. I hope your dog gets his certificate.
Hello Kat. thanks for sending some rain, but I never ordered cold with it. Maybe your turkeys were washed away in the floods. Pity you couldn't have sent fenceman off somewhere in a boat. You must have areal jungle there now with the wet weather and humidity.
How is your painting going. I must admit, I havent done any for over a year as the back room has been too cold to work in. Besides, hubby tends to fill it up with his bits and pieces.
Hello Colleen, sorry to hear about the little fellow not well. Have a good day with Brians friend . He will enjoy seeing all your plants from Brian.
Better move and get a couple of things ready to post later when the PO opens.
I will leave something tasty for you all. Lovely Boiled Fruit Cake.
Have a great day and enjoy your gardens.

Good morning everyone. So much reading to catch up on. Is good!

Hello Tanzen, and welcome. I love hoyas too, but not snakes. Only ever had one snake here, a young brown. He'd been driven out of the swamp by bulldozers. Plenty of the nasty ones up near the river though.

Am not very chatty today as I am down with a monster chest cold. Darned bus driver was barking away while driving his passengers, and spreading it through the aircon. Probably everyone on the bus that day is now sick.

Keep cool today everyone. I pray for relief soon. The ants are swarming so must be something coming, I hope. Do ants lie?

    Good morning everyone.
Its funny getting up in the dark now that we are nearing autumn. I'll be glad to see us back to normal time soon. Daylight saving time is good in the summer but I think they could end it a bit earlier.
I potted up a few new cymbidium orchids yesterday. It was cold but fine and being down in the orchid house, I was out of the wind. I bought the orchids on eBay. They are mature flowering size and were going cheap. I thought I may as well try them and see what happens.
I found another two zinnias seedlings coming up. I may yet have a show. Maybe if they grow and self seed, the seeds will grow again . I have no problem with plants self seeding but if I put seeds out myself, they never appear. We do have millions of ants around so they don't go hungry with all my seeds around.
We have a lot of the biting black ants. They are about half an inch long and their bite stings like burning. There are nests every few metres when you look around. Not a problem really unless you disturb them , then look out. I know they are there so am careful if I have to dig a hole. There are lots of the smaller ants too but not a great annoyance as long as they are outside. The black ants have a freeway up the middle of the front path and just before rain and even in the rain, they get out on the march looking for food. They also get in around the back door wandering around at night.
Poor hubby went out last night, not looking , and walked right into one of the orb spiders webs. It was across the back door. Are they trying to keep us inside ? He moved the web, but said madame was back redoing it later. I think she may have found him a little tough to eat.
    Hello Charleen, Louise, and Anthony.
Also Karen, Colleeen, Chrissy and Pam.
Hello Kat and anyone else popping in.
I am off to see how many flowers are out on my brugs.
Have a great day and stay safe.
Try these yummy Oatmeal Cookies. ( Don't give them all to Charley, Charleen. )

I am jealous Jean ...my poor babies are starting to perk up as the temps start to drop and I can see buds starting up but the terrible heat may have deformed the next lot of blooms.
I found nasty grey weevils munching on some of the new green leaves this morning leaving nothing but lace grrrr!
I think they migrate from the citrus,
    http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/horticulture/citrus/he...
There are bite sized scars on the branches that were hail damaged ...so terrible to look at :(
Hopefully when the new leaves grow they will cover that.
Gee you are brave buying those orchids.

When I first moved here to this garden my family donated some rhubarb plants for my veggie garden.
Unfortunately they came with nests of Green Head ants.
They leave an awful lump that lasts for days and stings like mad.
I don't know what happened to them because after about a year they disappeared.
Maybe the local ants killed them.
Isn't it sad when the seeds start germinating too late in the season to survive Winter.
I am so happy to finally have been able to sleep as it was only about 22C overnight and they say it won't get much warmer than that today ...perfect weather for garden chores except I have people coming from the blind society to visit with my brother.
    Oh well perhaps tomorrow.

    Charleen love that hat :-)

Good morning everyone. My camera has gone on the blink. When I turn it on it won't stay on, just turns itself back off again. Anyone got any clues. I have fully charged the battery, but maybe I need a new battery. I feel as though my right arm has been cut off without my camera. Will have to buy a new one if I can't get this working. Beautiful weather here. Cool in the mornings with a slight breeze during the day and lots of sunshine. beautiful for whatever one wants to do. It was shopping day yesterday so I have to wash this morning but can do lots of things in between the loads. I noticed the camphor laurel has sprouted again so will have to deal with that and pull some more thistles for the galahs. I have my own on going supply of thistles for them. The roses are still flowering beautifully but some need to be dead-headed again. It's a never-ending job isn't it. Well had better get to it as I've lots to do. Be back later. Colleen

I am fine, my family are all ok - but the scenes of devastation on the tv are just horrible.
I went in to work & was sent home, my boss didn't want anyone inside as we have been having strong aftershocks as well.
My stepson has just left to go to his girlfriend who is in a bad way after seeing the bodies of some of the quake victims - I would have preferred he stay put but can understand him wanting to be there for her.
this is worse than the September quake, there were no fatalities back then, this time there are multiple deaths & serious injuries.
At one stage they ran out of ambulances, people volunteered their station wagons & 4 wheel drives to ferry people to hospital or triage stations.
At home here we suffered a little more damage, the back fence is a block wall & it was cracked by the Sept quake & has collapsed completely behind the garage taking out the window as well.
A pillar at the front of the house has snapped & only saved from falling because it is wedged against the eaves

Copper is flaked out again on our couch.
He has been very whiny since September & getting so bad that this morning I put the camp bed down in his room & slept there - it was 5.30am, hubby had gone to work & I wasn't starting till 2pm.
Copper settled once he had company & I finally got some sleep.
He was actually very quiet this afternoon & I had just let him outside & was in his room folding up the camp bed when the quake struck.
I crouched down & hung on while the house shook, I could see the water in his bowls slopping out & hear things falling down.
All the cupboard doors were flung open & cans & packets of food thrown out of the pantry.
I found a crystal glass in the dining area...
it had been tossed out of the cupboard & rolled along the floor - unbroken.
we are still finding things that have fallen over but nothing major & at the end of the day you can always replace stuff, you cannot replace people!
Anyway we are going to go to bed & try to sleep.
I have filled up water jugs just in case the water supply fails here.
Only one reservoir in the nth west is still pumping - that would be why we still have tap water here when 80% of the city has lost theirs.
We have got power too... again very lucky as many suburbs have lost power.
We will have to wait & see what tomorrow brings.

Teresa, I'm so pleased to hear you're ok. My precious little 3 month old grandson's other nanna and her hubby live in Canterbury, and as of 5 pm (here) they'd been unable to get news on whether they're ok. Can only hope and pray.

So many natural disasters lately. It's just heartbreaking to see the devastation. As you say Chrissy, the media should show a little more respect. It's just disgusting the way they behave at times.

Good morning everyone. Not such a good morning in NZ. Teresa, so glad you are safe . Our heartfelt condolences for all those who have now lost a loved one.
I saw the mess on TV. Chrissy, you would think at times like that , right in the middle of a disaster, the reporters would have a little more sense . I saw a young female reporter asking obviously shocked people, inane questions , like "how did it feel when things were falling on you". She may have meant well but was clearly inexperienced in dealing with people in shock.
I know we must have news, but surely there is some sort of training for reporters in emergencies.
So sad, to have come right on the heels of the last bad one, before people had a chance to get themselves over the trauma .
Teresa, I hope your house is safe for you. So much structural damage can be unseen at first. Sad to see the lovely cathedral so damaged too.
I am not going to worry about anything else today as we are feeling sad for our NZ neighbors.
I'll just leave out a tray of Mixed Cakes for anyone coming in .
Hello to all our friends out there . Colleen, Chrissy, Dianne, Anthony, Marlene, Pam, Karen, Kat, Charleen and Louise.
    Jean.

Good morning everyone. As Jean said ,not a good morning in NZ. So many disasters in such a short time. What is happening?
Dentist today for my little grandson. Hopefully they can find out a solution for his problems and then no more pain for the poor little fellow. He is being so naughty at home and at school at the moment, and I reckon it has something to do with what he's feeling. We'll see. You can't have an SRC misbehaving can you? His induction tomorrow and he gets a badge. I hope my camera's working by then. Well everyone have a lovely day and my thoughts are with the people who have been through these terrible times. Good morning everyone. Its foggy here this morning. We have been having a few very cold mornings but the day eventually warms up by lunchtime. The rain the other day has bought on fresh growth on everything . There is now a smell of rotting nectarines as they all fall off the trees. We are like the birds now, having eaten so many, one just walks by the trees. I have small seedling trees popping up all over the place. I said to hubby, we could plant a nectarine forest. I just hope they die off, unlike the Ash tree seedlings, which I am still pulling up from everywhere. I found one yesterday, about 4 foot high, coming up through another shrub. I tried Roundup on all the ones out in the open , but they are persistent things. The main trouble is that even when tiny, they put down a long tap root so its very hard to just pull them out. Oh well. A tree is a tree, I suppose. There will be a forest of Ash trees . Usually in a warm to hot summer, they die off because of lack of water but this year they have had lots of rain. Hubby planted the original which is now nearly dead and has to come out.
He has lots of work to do with his trusty chainsaw as there are lots of branches to come off the gum trees . He loves cutting the branches off, but then one has to get rid of them. It gets a bit messy for a while. We usually have a nice big bonfire when the fire restrictions are over.
My chrysanthemums should look good this year with the rain they have had. The plants are all growing very well. I have puppies on the broms and more flowers on the brugs. Next on the list will be the zygos starting to form buds.
I have to be careful going into the greenhouse to check on things as Mrs Orb has put her web across the doorway. Even though I get rid of it each day, she persists in putting it back . Hubby has the same problem as he goes out the back door at night. He moved that orbie but she came back..
Hello to everyone , Colleen, I hope the little fellow gets better soon. Its no fun with toothache.
Teresa, I hope all your family and friends are safe there. It is terrible to see the grief of those who have lost loved ones.
I am going off to the kitchen to put out something nice for you all. Yellow Buttercake..
    Stay safe ...Jean.

Hello all. I was holding my breath reading the thread to see if there was word about our NZ friends and was so relieved to hear that you and yours are safe, Teresa! My heart feels so heavy for those who have not been as fortunate. The shocking traumas are just one after another everywhere, it seems. I guess all we can do is think of each other with warmth and caring and pray for the safety and comfort of those who are suffering in any way.

Colleen, I am sorry to hear your little grandson is having such a tough time. I am thinking of him and hoping for better days for him soon.

Good morning all. Well we had our visit to the dentist and it's not good news. He also has an absess on the other side and both teeth have to come out because the absesses have killed the roots. I took him for X-rays and his poor little mouth is absolutely crammed packed with teeth to fall out and teeth to come through. The dentist said once these two are taken out he should be okay until about 12 years old and then the teeth pulling and braces start. Poor little fellow. Pam have you heard any news on your little G/D other Nanna? I hope all is well. SRC induction today so I'm off to the school to watch at 9.15. Have had a busy week so far. I have been trying to get to Berri to see if my sewing machines are ready but haven't found the time yet. Not today so maybe tomorrow. Will have to go. Be back later. I hope everyone is well. Good morning everyone. Hope all is well with you all. Things are ongoing in Christchurch and we just can't imagine what it is like. It is wonderful to see the rescues still happening, but so very, very tragic for the loved ones of those who didn't make it.

Colleen, so sad your grandson has to go through all that. Teeth are great when they are in good health, but can cause the most dreadful problems if things go wrong.

I am still not very chatty. This chest cold is really bringing me down, mainly the coughing. I count my lucky stars that I am not in a danger zone, but I do wish I could count them without the coughing.

    Have a lovely day.

Nanna is safe thanks Colleen. It must be so horrible for all the people who are still waiting for their loved ones to be found. There's still hope that some will be alive in there, so we can only hope and pray that they're found quickly.

Poor little Cameron's mouth must be so sore, it's little wonder he's been a bit naughty. Once they get it sorted, and the infection cleared up I'm sure he'll be feeling much better. Poor little man!

The RSA where I work in Papanui is not open yet, my boss rang to say not to come in today & she will update me tomorrow.
I have been out in the garden for a while, the after shocks are not as noticeable out there & it took my mind off the whole horror story for a while.
My baby brother in Sydney offered us a place to stay if we wanted to get out, Air NZ has done amazing cheap flights first on domestic to get people in or out of ChCh, and then they discounted international flights as well.
We are staying put though, we have power & water - albeit needing to be boiled for 3 minutes before use.
We also have enough foodstuffs to get by.
we keep extra bread in the freezer & UHT milk in the pantry & just stocked up on tinned goods on our last shop.
We also have enough pet food for a while, and the pets are another reason to stay put, they are both jumpy right now & I couldn't abandon them.

Teresa, I can only hope and pray that, for the suburbs at least, life can quickly return to normal, as close to as possible. As needs arise, they will be attended to, but for those near the city, I imagine they are still in shock and needing a lot of help and guidance. It is such a massive job ahead. Its getting those things like water and sewerage restored as quickly as possible that will help with the first steps of getting things underway. I hope there won't be food shortages.

I am so glad your dogs are safe with you. They can only sense that something is wrong, but not what it is.

    Hugs to you

Yes the animals seem to know long before we do ...after what is happening in NZ it sort makes you a bit nervous when they start to act strangely.
I have been noticing odd things happening out there.

NZ looks like it has been bombed ... the poor people feel like it .
Lets hope and pray that the huge waves of public support and aid will give them strength and hope.

Teresa you just take it one day at a time ...we can't say anything that can make it better for you but we hope it helps that you are not alone in spirit ...we are right beside you.

To all our gardeners here in the tea room it's been a sombre time in the year 2011 so far,
    let's hope it improves.
Thank goodness we can find friendly shoulders to weep on, sympathy when injured or ill, and happy smiles to celebrate with us when things are going well.

Right now we are willing our mates over the ditch and those here who suffered floods and cyclones, towards the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

It's Friday so lets look forward to the weekend if we can ...to work in the garden is to find peace and respite from the tribulations of life.
So go do it if you can ...we need it.

Link was fine Teresa, horrifying vision, when you realize that there are still people in those buildings.

How many of the newer buildings are being built to withstand earthquakes? is that the normal building practice in CC.
It was being discussed that this quake shook sideways instead of up and down so they doubted if the precautions would have helped.
Terrible situation, for those who want to stay in CC...what do you do?

Good morning all. A lovely day yesterday and looks like being the same for a few days. Lovely Autumn weather. I can live with this with maybe a day of rain per fortnight. I didn't do a lot in the garden physically but was out there cataloguing and checking numbers with names on irises, epis etc.
Lots of amaryllis out now. I do like "Hathor"as one of the nicest white bulbs. Nice scent too.
I see my lilums sending up new shoots. Mrs Orb spider was back in her place last night. She is certainly showing hubby that he cant move her around. It must have been an epic trek for her to walk all the way across the garden to get back in place. I have a new one in the green house too. There are now 3 large orbies in there. Makes it a bit squashed when I need to get in to water. I have to watch them all so I dont disturb them and have them on me..
Hello Chrissy, we all have those granny moments. I hope your brother is feeling a lot better. Its always hard when on new medications.
Colleen, hope the little fellow is feeling a lot better. My cacti from you and Brian are putting on babies. Cute little things.
Hello Teresa, I have been watching the news about the quake. What a terrible time it is for you all. I see that a lot of historic buildings are badly damaged . I know the loss of life is much worse but the lovely old buildings are part of who NZ is, so it is a shame they are so bad.
The rescuers are doing a tremendous job, as they always do in disasters. Stay safe where you are.
Pam, hope your cold is going away. Not a nice thing to be stuck with.
Hello Dianne, your roses here are doing so well. I love that Maurice Utrillo.
Hello Karen, I hope you also are starting to get over your chest cold too.
Louise, It must be looking lovely at your place now that Spring is nearly there. Lots of new things popping up. You will be looking forward to seeing NH again after all the snow. There will be lots of new things coming up there too. Pats for the young ladies.
Charleen, how are you and Charley going. Lots of nice weather coming now for you all. Give Charley and his friends a pat from me.
I am going out to move a few irises this morning. I have decided that there are a few I can get rid of and make room for new ones.
Have a great day and stay safe .
Here something tasty to nibble on. Blackberry and Apple Bread.

Colleen, hope you grandson is comfortable today.

I had a call from work, they want me to come in & work 3.30pm - 9pm...
normally the Friday shift would be 5pm -11.30pm but they want to be closing early.
Good call I think, last thing people need is to be driving around after dark with a few drinks on board.
And I don't want to be working late at night either.
It is raining again today, they haven't found any more survivors & this cold weather is not helping.
After the Sept 4 quake we had amazing weather, and no deaths...
this one so much the opposite, it is just incredible that going through two earthquakes 5 months apart would be such different experiences.
I slept on the camp bed in the dog's room last night, hubby was snoring loudly & I could hear Copper whining so figured keeping him company might mean we all got some sleep.
Another after shock hit & Copper leapt up in fright - I reached over to pat him & he nearly jumped out of his skin at my touch.
He settled when I spoke to him & curled up with his head resting on the bed till we both fell asleep.
On our walk this morning I could see a few people out in the rain shovelling the footpath & their driveways clear of the grey sludge that has bubbled up with the liquefaction.
the dairy around the road & the bakery next to it are open now, I will have to go buy milk we are getting low - I thought we still had plenty or I would have stopped in then.
I guess Copper won't mind a second walk.

    Good morning everyone.
A bit foggy here again but like yesterday , it should get quite warm later.
It is such a nice time of year in autumn. Still lots of growth on the roses and others, lots of bulbs poking their heads up and the leaves on some of the trees are looking a bit yellow.
Chrissy, keep your spirits up and pop into the Tea Room for a break when you can. Your brother is so lucky to have you caring for him.
Teresa, hope you are still okay there. I bet Copper loved that second walk. Take care and our thoughts are with you and all the people in NZ.
Hello Karen, I hope you are recovering well now.
Pam, how are you going ? . Over that cold yet ?
They are not nice things to have at all.
Anthony, how are things in Tassie ? I bet you are flat out getting all the liliums potted etc.
I am still watching my longiflorum seed pods.
Very disappointing year for the zantedeschias . Only one flowered although they all grew well. I may move them out the back somewhere and forget them for a while. Neglect seems to work on many plants.
    Hello Kat and Colleen.
Hello Jean/Moon. Nice to see you pop in.
Louise and Charleen, hope you are seeing some lovely early spring weather there..
Elaine, how are you going ? Busy with your mosaics.
I am going out to check on my b rugs and see if Mrs Orb spider has blocked my path again. Those web threads are very strong when you walk into them. I almost feel like she would pop out and wrap me up for tea.
Have a safe day all . Here is some Lemon Cranberry Poundcake to have with a nice cuppa.

    Morning all.
Looks like a lovely day ahead.
Anthony, on the radio this morning they reported that the Fruit Fly has been spotted in Tassie...it's supposed to be in Victoria as well,
haven't heard of anyone with it thank goodness.

Jean, I'll skip your lovely cake this morning for the real stuff...Our nearest nursery has scrumptious scones and jam/cream...so I'm headed their way with Matilda this morning...She loves the scones too...I am looking for a white Luculia, haven't been able to find one yet...they are a lovely plant that flowers in the summer...That and a Lapageria are the 2 plants I need to have all the plants that I want for my garden.

That doesn't mean I won't be buying others...but I have a list of my favourites and they are the last two.
My Zantes have done the same thing Jean..lush growth no flowers.

    happy gardening everyone...

Anthony, I've had trouble getting fresh apples here. My birds won't eat the old apples, only the best for them. Can't the fruit fly be controlled? I don't know much about it.

Dianne, have a lovely morning, and hope you get those plants you want. I love having scones and tea. Not sure if the nursery here does them though they do have a cafe there. Quite the place to go on Sunday, actually. So I'm told.

Pam, sorry to hear about your cold. Hope we both improve quickly. Why do they hang on so long? I got no sleep at all last night. Soon as my head goes down, the coughing starts.

Chrissy, I hope those antibiotics run out soon. Sometimes I wonder if "the cure" isn't worse than the disease.

Hello to everyone else too. I am trying to type between bouts of barking here. But actually don't feel that bad. The last cold I had was much worse than this one.

    Have a lovely weekend.

Back again, scones were great..I was a bit naughty with the cream, well more than a bit..lol

So much for enough plants...I bought two Buddleias...Pink Delight and Black Knight...full of flowers and only $5.50 each..
They will go in my bird and lizard garden out the front...It's really packed in there now...plenty of birds, haven't seen any Skinks yet..

Talking of apples, on the way to the nursery we go past lots of farms and on the side of the road near one of them is a massive old apple tree...The apples are for cooking, though some people like to eat green apples, my daughter included...anyway this tree supplies apples for many people and the nursery has used the wood for grafting, it is such a wonderful tree...Nobody feeds or waters it...it just grows and it's very big.

When we went past this morning, we normally stop and see how close the fruit is to ripening, shock horror...NO TREE. Sign on the verge had been put up saying that this is a conservation area...maybe it is, but there aren't any other bushes or trees of any sort for at least 100 mtrs either way...

How sad to take a tree that was so useful away...The dear old thing was growing in knee deep grass and as well as supplying fruit, it was a lovely shade tree for the horses in the paddock and I bet they used to enjoy the apples too..our horse always did.
In this day and age of diseases and inedible fruit..to destroy a tree like that is criminal...who knows when we might need all the old varieties again...

It's a strange world...isn't it...It's possible that something rare is growing in the grass along there but if it is, the apple tree has been there over 50 yrs, so they must have been compatible.

I'm really annoyed now...tomorrow I will look and see if the other fruit trees that are growing wild in the area have been removed.

    Is this happening all over?
    Dianne.

Oh Dianne, I know how you feel. There was a lovely avocado tree growing where I walked, and I used to collect free avocados. Then one day a tree grinder was taking out the stump. That gone, nothing left. The avocadoes were different, brown skin, and buttery flesh, totally delicious. I could not understand how anyone could kill it, and let the owner know how I felt. He was a doctor. The tree was perfectly healthy, the fruit was healthy. But he said it was leaving a mess (the mess being ripe fruit that dropped on the ground).

Too much is being lost to us, sadly. But when its food, I have to question the sanity of such a decision.

Karen - what a waste, when there are people going hungry how lazy to let good fruit rot on the ground & then to cut the tree down because of the mess.
every year the RSA's in the South Island are gifted with citrus fruit donated by people in the North Island who have trees producing more than they can use.

Teresa, to me, the biggest crime of all is the selling off of our fertile soil to housing developers. So little of Australia's soil is suited to growing, and close to us we have beautiful rich red soil ex farms being divided into housing lots. Can never get that land back, and the day will come when we need it. They are bringing in millions more people and taking up the very land that should feed them to put housing up for them. Greed rules!

Back in 2004 when my daughter and son in law were looking for a home in the Brisbane area, she sent me an article about housing in the area. The Statistics at that time said close to 1000 new people were moving into the area each month. If that trend is still going, then Brisbane would have close to 72,000 new residents by the end of 2010. That's a lot of houses... My first visit to Brisbane was in 2007...last summer when i was there I was amazed at how much the area had grown. One development after another from Northgate to Caloundra

After hurricane Katrina, the population in our rural parish increased by close to 7000 folks. developers swooped in and started buying up pastureland and putting in subdivisions...now we have about 20 new housing developments that are only partially full and a few that didn't even get into the construction stage. In the 2 years following Katrina, nearly 2000 of those folks moved back to New Orleans, adding even more empty homes to the tally.

They cut down 100 year old live oaks like they were weeds and stripped away tons of top soil changing the topography for ever. The end result was heavier flooding in some areas, small creeks that had never flooded were over-running their banks after a heavy rain and the overall infrastructure (roads, schools, employment base) were stretched to the breaking point. Our Parish President was quoted as saying he wished more consideration had been given to the approval of these new subdivisions and their impact on our parish...spilt milk...and hindsight is always 20/20. And the trees are gone forever.

When beautiful trees are destroyed, I actually feel physical pain. There is no stopping developers, nor local governments who think they are going to reap a fortune off new tax payers buying into the area. They call it progress. I call it criminal destruction.

Elaine, so sorry you have been bed ridden. I hope you are getting back to normal now. Take it easy. Have fun with the guitars.

Morning all. Elaine, I hope you're feeling better. How was the theatre?

Girls (and Anthony), don't get me started about our farmers. Given that they're the backbone of our country I think the way they're treated is absolutely disgusting. I flatly refuse to buy imported fruit and veg. Apart from the nasty chemicals that aren't on it, the Aussie grown garlic tastes far better than the imported stuff anyway. I'd rather pay a higher price and know that I'm not eating chemicals that have been banned here for a number of years.

I've noticed it's getting harder to get canned produce that is grown in Australia. A couple of companies that I'd have thought would have been Australian produce have surprised me. And rice ... I picked up a pack of Koala brand one day, I figured with a name like that it was a pretty safe bet, but found it was a product of Taiwan. Now is that a deliberate attempt to deceive people who can't be bothered checking or what?!

Karen, I hope your cold starts to improve shortly. I think mine has finally started to turn around. There's nothing more frustrating than having decent days to work in the yard, but not the energy to do it.

Good morning everyone. We had a lovely drop of rain last night. Its not cold or windy , so it will be nice outside today.
I get annoyed when I read about trees being chopped down Dianne. How utterly stupid some people are. I have no time for these so called "conservationists". Most havent a clue. If there was anything there worth saving, the horses would have eaten it buy now. People that chop trees down should be made to replace them . I know there are laws about trees being cut down, but it the laws seem to apply only when it suits councils and such. If you have an unsafe eucalypt in your yard, oh no, you cant cut it down, but have a long avenue of stately elms or the like and next thing they are gone.
I have a few ideas about what I would do with these politically correct idiots. We dont need them at all.
I watched River Cottage the other day on TV. The chap was documenting all the wild fruit trees around England. People were encouraged to visit the trees for the free fruit. I wonder how old the show was and whether the trees are as plentiful now. Some of these were varieties that no longer exist in orchards.
When living in Bright, I used to wander along the river with the kids and have feeds of wild fruit. Apples, plums, apricots, pears. I bet most of them are gone now too. People should realise, when you chop a tree down, it is gone forever.
I'd better get off the soap box and see whats in the kitchen for you all.
Lovely to see you back Elaine. You keep up that resting.
Anthony, more lily seeds ? You won't be able to get out of your house for lilies. How lovely they will look in flower. Look forward to a new lilium thread this spring.
Hello Pam and Karen, I hope you are both on the mend now.
Hello Jean/Moon. It seems the same thing happens everywhere to our lovely trees. We have those "conservationists" trying to tell us we should only have native trees growing. If they had their way, they would rip up our Botanic Gardens too. There is a large Arboretum near here. One of the largest for native trees. It is nice to see them but it just looks like normal bush , not a place to wander and admire and sit on lawns with a picnic. Our native trees here have evolved to withstand the harsh climate and certainly do that, but most are not for urban areas. I dont deny there are some beautiful ones and smaller ones which can live happily beside the imported beauties. I have both living well with each other.
We should be allowed to plant what we like to look at and councils should embrace imported trees more , just as our early settlers did. I know they did it to remind them of home but those imported trees do thrive here and when they are old and die, should be replaced with the same not some gum tree.
Hello Colleen, Kat, and anyone else out there.
Hello Louise and Charleen , both enjoying the move into spring.
I will leave out some Carrot and Walnut Cake for you all. Not too much cream Dianne.
    Happy gardening.

Yum, I love carrot cake. Thanks Jean.

It's such a shame for those wild fruit trees to be removed, if they're not a problem, and not bug-infested. There are so many pleasurable things we've done in our lives that our children and theirs will never get to experience. The simple, basic things that we simply took for granted, such as being able to go pick wild fruit like that, or to simply head to the local park or bushland and play and explore for the day, with our parents knowing we were safe to do so.

I so agree. We used to get on our bikes and go incredible distances, incredible places, bush, creeks, shorelines to explore. Had wild gooseberries and sweet potatoes growing in the bush behind us. Only houses there now. Very sad.

Went to Lagoon View Road Nursery today at Redland Bay. Plenty there to see, and they are working hard on their own gardens too. Makes it nice to explore. I only got one plant today, a bromeliad, but will be going back, and look forward to seeing their future plans come to fruition.

Are they the caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly? I am trying to keep a caterpillar of the Orchard butterfly alive. Admittedly, he eats most of the leaves on the little lemon tree, but it doesn't seem to affect the fruit or the new growth. They are such beautiful things.

In many countries the streets are planted with edible trees, why don't we do it here.
I think perhaps in some places it happens but not council planted.
I suppose there may be litter but that happens with most plantings anyway.
If carefully chosen old reliable varieties like the ones found neglected but thriving in abandoned farms were the ones chosen there should not be too much maintenance involved.
Perhaps we can only dream of such things.

Good morning everyone. A nice cool autumn morning here. The sun is not up yet but it should be a lovely day. I went around yesterday with the hedge clippers to cut all the paths back. It doesn't take long for plants to start wanting to hang right over them. I found another iris with buds so I wonder if any others will decide to come out and see whats going on this time of year. We have a yellow bottlebrush that has decided to go mad and flower too. I had to push my way in and get behind the large plumbago as it was growing over the roof of the zygo house . It was getting too dark along that side so ,"chop, chop " Just a little bit because I do like the plumbago and their multitudes of flowers. This one was the blue and I have another out the front plus 2 whites.
Better get out in the kitchen and see what there to put out for everyone. Hubby an dI both have hearing appointments today so it will off to town twice this week.

Elaine, although some may feel that it's somehow disrespectful to enjoy life when there's suffering going on elsewhere, we MUST look after our mental health. It's an integral part of our wellbeing and provides us with the ability to care appropriately for others and their situation. Without it, we're as good as useless to them . By all means, take the time to nurture yourself, and don't feel guilty for doing so. After a month in bed you deserve to spend some time doing what you enjoy.

Let's make March "LOOK AFTER YOUR SOUL" month...it's a beautiful time of year for reflection and there wouldn't be one amongst us who doesn't need the inner peace...
So all through this beautiful first month of Autumn let's concentrate on what makes US happy...

If it's spending more time with loved ones or going somewhere special or just sitting in the garden...
    JUST DO IT.

It's my mother's birthday tomorrow and we will go to the Botanic gardens and have afternoon tea there...So we will start the month on the right note...
I hope that everyone does the same...

I'm off to the knee specialist tomorrow. This is my second visit. He doesn't want to do a knee replacement because my BP is too high.

I can't see it being down tomorrow as I had to go to Toowoomba last weekend to my granddaughters Engagement Party. Three hour drive up and three hour drive back.

    Teresa...how are things with you?
I do hope the after-shocks stop soon. It must be frightening every time there is one. I cried today when I heard the first funeral was for a five month old baby. *SO SAD*

Hello everyone. Quite a cool morning here with a small shower overnight. Yesterday was mostly cloudy but warm. After seeing our hearing lady and having hearing aids adjusted, we had a lovely lunch. During the afternoon I dug up a few irises that I have sold . I have never seen so much growth on them at this time of year. Its thanks to all that spring and early summer rain. I found yet another with buds coming.
I hope all you ladies are feeling better and able to get out in your gardens. Teresa, be careful walking so far if it is warm. I do hope the after shocks abate but sadly I don;t think they will any time soon. The Earth is very restless.
Anthony, I can just picture you with lily leaves poking out your ears. It will be an exciting time for you as they grow and start to flower later in the year. Hope Cocky is going along well there too.
My lilium pods are gettiing fat. I hope they hang on and I can get seeds to grow. My formosa lilies are nearly out too.
Lots of little green bulb leaves poking up everywhere now. They are a bit early , but then with the weather who knows what season it is. .
Madame Orb spider has continued to make her web across the path at the back door. I also have another Madame in the greenhouse who puts hers right in your face at the door. Lucky for her , I don't need to go in every day.
Better get out and finish digging the last few irises.
Try this Buttermilk Fruitcake with your cuppa. See you over in the new place.
