I live in Washington State where we have mild winters. At the end of summer into fall my E. Martinii is looking beautiful in all it luscious glory... then the cold weather hits! Our average winter temp is 42 degrees, with maybe 32 degrees hitting a total of 2 -3 weeks with that temp being scattered throughout winter. And only bout one week total of below freezing.
Now with that said my E. Martinii gets flattened and splayed out from any freeze that may hit it. We are wet here most winters, and the water that accumulates on them can weigh them down but but they usually stay up, so how do I keep them from lying down from the weight of a freeze or especially snow? They will not pop back up and often the blooms that come in the spring are sticking out horizontally. I thought about pruning but I would I not sacrifice the bloom? I prune out any dead stalks that did not survive the freeze at that time of year but otherwise I put up with looking at a splayed out plant...the stems are a pretty red but the center has much to be desired.
