We came from http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1157526/

This Pot Holder Swap is now CLOSED. We will be making two pot holders to send to your swap mate. Please post the colors of your kitchen or the colors you want in your pot holders to make it easier for your partner. Pot holders should have insul-bright or some other insulation in them to make them heat resistant. Patterns are your choice.
While quilting is not necessary something should keep the back and front together.

I will be taking names until Sunday,Feb. 20 and will give you your partners name the next day. You will have until May 1 to finish and mail your pot holders to your partner.
Please take a picture of your pot holder to share.

Here we are at a new thread. It took me a while but I figured it out! I am waiting for a pattern so I can get started. Yes, I know, I was going to use the book I found but I found some fabric that I just loved for my buddy and it took me in a whole different direction. Ever have that happen to you? LOL

I made a practice pair ...the thick layers were a little tricky to keep lined up while sewing...I'm thinking for the next one that cutting all inside layers and the backing fabric piece bigger than the front will solve that issue .. then I can cut off the excess after the quilting/stitching is completed...too bad I didn't figure that out with the first pair, would have made it easier on myself!

Finally!...They took longer than I thought they would, but I really enjoyed making them. I'm sure the next ones I'll be making for some friends and family will go more quickly now that I have the hang of it! Thanks for coming up with this swap idea! I really enjoy the smaller projects. I hope other sewers/quilters can come up with some other fun projects like this one. I know some of the quilting guilds/groups make and share ideas such as this one. It will be a day or two before I can get these to the post office.

Thanks! I was pretty amazed that they came out so well. I was worried the colors/design/fabrics were too busy.. too much going on...picking patchwork fabric combinations is not my strong suit! But by the time I got it finished I really liked them. I even managed to get a little blue in there...that was totally not planned in the beginning, not sure how that happened, ha. I'm still pretty new to the patchwork too...this was the first time I ever made this kind of block and kept sewing to the end when I was supposed to leave a part open..so there was some stitch removing a couple times. So glad you like them and that they go well with your kitchen. And am especially glad they are going to get used!

Thanks folks! I've had that fabric for a long time. I used to do some sewing way back when. When I found it in the stash I knew right away what to do with it. The long piece is a kind of narrow sort of table runner just to use up the material. Someone sent me a runner last fall and I love it so much it is always in the laundry or on the table. Just right for two people.

Nicole, what are the dimentions of the pot pinchers? I bought a pattern but it makes a pretty large size. As my hands are small, I tried to shrink the pattern on a copy machine to make it better for me. I also wasn't sure what interfacing to buy...what I got seems too stiff. What did you use for that? I really love the fabrics you used! Thanks! tish

The little things are call "Hot Fingers" and I got the pattern from Clotilde online. It takes 2 fat quarters to make 3 Hot Fingers and I used Insul bright instead of the Fusible Fleece they called for since I had some left from the pot holders. They were fun and quick to make and I thought they would go well with the larger pot holders. I'm going to make some for a bazaar; they give you a copy of a card to copy if you are selling them.

By the way, does anyone know what happened to the DG site? I am getting everything in VERY tiny type that is very hard for these old eyes to read. Is itjust me or is everyone seeing it that way?

This forum is very nice. Friendly and understanding members. I really like it here. Just friendship and no pressure. There is enough pressure eveywhere else. Sewing and sewing forums are for relaxing and enjoyment.

I like that pot pincher pattern except I'd like each end to have a little finger hold. Easy enough to do. Also the place to put your fingers is not as deep as my pattern and I think I like that too. I will make one and see if I like it better. Thanks for the link.

The pattern I have is "Pot Pinchers! from Vanilla House Designs"..it calls for an interfacing called, Peltex or Timtex to go between the fabrics that form the top..it pooches open ready for the fingers to slip in. If I got the correct stuff, it is very stiff interfacing. Although I like how it stays open, I don't like the stiffness. I think I will try it again without that and see how I like them. This pattern also has the insulbrite.

Might contact my swap partner to see if I can mail when I cross over to the USA on 19th..wouldn't be much travel time difference if I send from here..last package I got recently took almost a month..time delay-customs!

Morning all, raining here today but did have something that brought sunshine into my life this morning!! On my way to work dropped into the post office and what did I find...package from Thunder..omg Thunder what lovely potholders, as with some of the rest of participants, doubt very much they'll be used as potholders..have a french cafe next to my kitchen so I'll display them proudly.

Would love to show you a photo but it must wait until I return home this evening..

Now for my swap buddy,

I'm not quite sure why this pot holder swap has overwhelmed me, is it because it's pot holders?? not quite sure..knowing I was travelling to the USA tomorrow I asked my swap partner if I could mail it beyond the date given and she said it would be ok..so that gave me yet another 2 weeks..so when did I start my pot holders??? 4:07a.m. this morning, so we all know what they will look like right? drats, not good but on the brighter side sent something as a peace offering for me being 'bad' so hope she understands..when posting my pot holders, please close your eyes...

I know the ones from Betty are being mailed today when she goes to the state but what about others? Let me know if you have not received a pot holder from your buddy and I will check it out for you. Since May 1 was the deadline we should be done soon.

This was a great swap and I'm glad I shared my idea for it with you all. We had lots of people sign up and some wonderful pot holders to share with each other. Don't worry Sheila. I had taken a pic of the pot holders before I mailed them out. I hope that you'd use them well in your new home.

Made her 3 types of potholders. Sheila gets a pair of each.
Thank God I did that...with the home to worry about, potholders will be the least of her worry!!

Sheila, wishing you good luck on the sale of your current home!

The best of the day Janice, Happy Birthday!!!

Have a story to tell my swap buddy..always a story to be had..

Was in USA, poor package travelled 1/2 around the USA last week, finally went into a Meijers that offered postal services and mailed all my quilt blocks I had with me, R/W/B swap package and of course my box of goodies for this swap.

Was driving home and said to the girls, can't understand why postage was soooo reasonable for all I mailed...WELL, no notation on receipt for the 'pot holder' box so I guess they would have 2 options..send it C.O.D. or cover the cost because they made an error and forgot to charge..not sure which they shall do!!! Surely they wouldn't just keep it would they?

Drats that IS NOT good, so dear partner, please let me know what happens..if charged I will send you postage!

Passed your house again, keep thinking one of these days I'm going to stop..lol

The girl had the sticker on the package, even told me the price, watched her put it in the bin but when charged no receipt..perhaps she put it on 2 and forgot to tally it with the others..have to wait and see!

Mittsy...We would take some of your rain if you want to send it down this way. We have had one day of rain in like 100 days.

Betty..You did a great job (no surprise at all)!!

Karen, if you ever get tired of those, send 'em to me, they would look nice on my table, countertop, oven door, ... LOL

Nice ones, Lucy!

You know what? Wouldn't that block look really nice on a quilt top with crocheted edging between the block and sashing??????

Laura, LK truly is a fantastic lady.. going through pain with her sewing hand, and yet making sure you'd get your potholders.

Nothing says, 'humbled'.
I am humbled to receive a pair of pot holders from my buddy, Cheryl.
Many of you know the trials she's facing, and meeting the deadline of making potholders should not be part of that personal trial.
Still, being a trooper she is, she makes sure that no one calls her a quitter.

Thank you Cheryl. I love the prints and it's so ingenous how the squares open up to even fit DH's hand.

God bless you, and I pray you continue to heal in all ways.

ETA: Cheryl, if you're reading this, know you're loved girl.

No no quitting here. I have to say I am proud of Jaye as well. I felt the worst being late for this swap because everyone got their squishies and Jaye was such a great sport about everyone getting theirs and never a sour tone for being made to wait. God Bless You back Jaye.

Thanks for that Barb, I love this group I stumbled in here one night while recovering from knee surgery I joined and I am having a blast and meeting some of the nicest people all around the world.

I am fine now getting back in the grove here I am dealing with some sickness with my Dad, right now he is ok but will be tough in times to come. Gonna just be as positive as I can and just be there.

Cher, consider yourself blessed!
There were more than a couple swappers, after deducing who my buddy is, and knowing your obstacles, offered to make them for you!! Serious.. I had to turn them down, especially one persistent quilter.
What's a potholder amongst friends?

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It's never an easy road when your sick loved ones are dependant on you.

Cheryl, I would also like to add my thoughts to the others--we are definitely here for you and I have found this is the most understanding, compassionate group of ladies I have ever known. I have been involved with my Mom for the past 15 months so understand about your Dad. Please take care!

LK, if it's the International Quilt Festival, take that trip!! Do it!!! If you didn't do it again, at least you've been exposed to one of the greatest in USA if not the world.
I had been to one in the late 80s and couldn't see it all in one day!! Well, I'm lucky I didn't have to pay for room and board for that weekend. But I ended up broke from the booths!
