Can I put lava rock in my sand filter .Presently use filter mats but they clog up weekly. use for mechanical filtration only. Have bio filter at another location

Yes, you can. I have done it for many, many years. The only problem is the weight when you have to do a thorough cleaning. I have changed to using hair rollers that you can buy in many stores. Those are cheap, light weight and to me easier to clean. Hope this helps.

There are also vendors on ebay that sell big bags of the bio-balls for well as the newer plastic string type media.
