This is our new ranch, BR Ranch Billy named it for us it will be a working chicken ranch someday.
I live where a lot of trailers and modular homes are and a stick built house is one that is built from the ground up. It is a Beautiful house on a cement foundation. It sits on 1.3 acres that is fully fenced in with a 6 ft high chain link. It is 2150 sq foot 3 bedroom 2 bath with a real garage. It is totally solar right now, I need the wind generator and have a lead on a 10,000 watt stand by generator. My neighbor hauls my water for 20 bucks a load, which is 750 gallons. The water tank is 2500 gallons. There is a shed, a solar room and some cement pads for Rv's on it as well. I am leasing it for a year to make sure Billy and I can survive, after that year I will be purchasing it for 30K. It is 11 miles from work, 3 miles on a dirt road. Neighbors are not really close to me, I would say a few acres between us. Billy will have a big room and I will finally have a guest room. My trailer I live in now would fit in the dining room and the kitchen of the new house..

MissJestr that looks wonderful! I had no idea you were moving; the house is gorgeous and looks like it's laid out beautifully. How much of your electricity will be supplied by solar panels? I'm assuming that you're not off the grid. Will there be a place for your horses?

I'll bet Billy is so proud of his new house!

Hey Green, I am Totally off the grid, the solar will supply all the electricity for the house with a stand by Generator just in case. Electricity is about 3 miles from the house so I think maybe in 10 years we can be wired, depends on how many people move out there.
I am figuring when I get the wind generator up the stand by generator will be in case of emergency. Since I live in Sunny Arizona I am figuring it maybe will be used when I need the air conditioning that is a huge unit on the top of the house. The house is well insulated, it was a 80 degree day outside and it was 62 inside with the wall that was facing the sun really cool to the touch. Billy LOVES the new place, it is a bigger room for him..

Thanks for sharing this with us! That is a really nice house and I do hope you will be successful with sun and wind for electric. I would really like to do that and get off the grid but I am not able to do that now. My house would have to be retrofitted. Expensive. Does it get very cold there? Here in Houston, it's the cooling electric bill that we dread, not the heating bill. I am so happy for you and your son. Happy Housewarming!!! Cam

It does get cold, but the wood burner will heat up the front rooms. For the bedroom I am looking into free standing propane heaters like I have in this place now, very efficient for little amount of propane. But I will work about that next fall. The heat will be interesting, maybe during our monsoon when it is humid. I am told that house does not get hot in the summer, we will see about that as well and there is a swamp cooler in the master bedroom that might cool off the bedrooms, and all the rooms have ceiling fans. There is always the horse water tank to cool us off.. LOL

I will rope off a little more than a quarter acre for the horses, 3 sides with the fencing, and one side with hot wire and a gate. Then they can get in the shade of the solar room until I can get the sheds for them put up.

I know Arizona gets up around 120 degrees at times in the summer. Can't imagine the heat.

I have a swamp cooler and prefer it. Only costs $20 a month to run. I've been told in places that are humid, like Houston, swamp coolers are useless. The new one I just bought is different from the others I've ever owned. It has a thing on top that fits in the window and can easily come off for winter. How cool is that? I may post a picture.

Whewww Busy day Green house it just fell into our lives, I checked and double checked and triple checked everything before I made the decision. I have lived on Solar before Billy, it is cool, but in a smaller house and a smaller system. I figure it is ment to be so we are going for it. When we drive up the sight all around is enough to take your breath away.
LFJ Today the temps were 74 here, and when I walked into the house at 5:30pm it was 60 degrees... It does get around 100 here, I am in Northern Arizona so it is a tad bit cooler.
Wren, the plan is to install water catchers on the roof to harvest the water for the chickens, dog and garden, wont have a garden this year, but next year I should have the water and the know how to conserve for the garden and we will plant flowers and trees. I did plant some Basil in the windowsill of the Kitchen today and am thinking I can get away with a small planter on the front porch, recycling the rinse water for the dishes to water them.
Mr Haystack, we will have two twin beds in Billy's room for when his brother spends the night and I have a guest room that will have a bed in it for Visitors... HINT HINT!!
Steadycam I am keeping a journal for Billy, I will pass the house down to him because he is the one who will be right beside me fixing, planning and living the dream...
Thank you for all the good wishes and I will keep posting pictures in this thread, since after all it will be a Working Chicken Ranch and I want you all to share in the process..

MrsC the house is outside of the airport going towards Vally Vista. Actually if you are on Rte 66 and you come upon mile marker 66 you can look over the tracks and see the house, but there was a Railroad accident and the railroad closed all the homemade trails that went under the tracks so I have to go thru the airport complex to get out there...

Hay I cant wait it is so awesome, my feet hurt from walking stretching and cleaning... It is awesome. I am not sure about how much a large bale will feed , I did some research awhile ago, I know they can weigh 500 to 2000 pounds and I know an ave bale is 75 to 100 pds. I am not quite sure how I would feed it and I am not sure how much one would cost.
Porkpal, My house now is in the hills, which is 14 miles away from my work. My new house is in the Valley and is only 11 miles from work.. I will miss the snow when the valley has the rain, but I think I can manage..

AND the new tip I got on my other thread. You know those Flower bed solar lights?? well put them outside during the day to charge then bring them in at night for free lights.. I am thinking a few baskets with some rocks in there will hold them and I can put one in Billy's bathroom and two down the hall (That gets really dark) and one in Billy's room for a nightlight. Just take them out when I leave in the morning and bring them in around dark... I am so loving that Idea...

The milk can is from my Grand Daddys dairy, the teapot was given to me by an old cowboy to water plants , the Iron stand is from a old railroad switch and the Gnome I bought so Lingernot would have a friend, the blue bucket Billy and I found on a hike...the rusted bucket you see on the right hand side is an old standard oil can and the horse shoes are from a friends wedding, they were the table decorations... The old handle on the left side and the coupler is from an old ranch here and that was part of the irrigation system. I even have the key that started it all... The family is long gone, but before the last boy passed on, he took me out there to see it. In its hayday they ran 1000 head of cattle and grew their own hay and had a killer water system.

I posted a comment but must have forgotten to send...The horses in motion, make me feel transfixed...There is nothing more majestic than watching these powerful animals at a full run, prancing or just plain frolicing. Love the Motley crew...The goats are cute though I'm not a fan of goats, I had two of them and they just ate the chicken feed faster than the chickens could. It seems as though you and Billy Bob are having a time of it...So happy for you. Hope you had a great birthday bash young lady. Wished I could have been there to celebrate with you all...Hay

Is the house adobe or is that a plaster finish? I love it. Not very green but I guess you are used to that? I'd love to live off grid but DH has to have his conveniences. LOL The sustainable living forum should be very helpful for you but please don't leave us hanging. We want to keep up with your adventures. Did you get everybody moved? I know how hard that is. It was a nightmare for us. And we didn't have any job security for 3 months after moving here so us and all the animals were just in limbo. Took a while to get all 9 horses and the pigs moved. Had somebody feeding them for us but they didn't do a good job of it. The horses lost a lot of weight and we had most of our hay supply disappear. The sow lost a litter of piglets in the malay. It was a nightmare. I pray your move has been a good one and everybody is settled in now. I can't wait to see how your place progresses. Tell Billy hello for me and give all the critters a scratch.

Please enjoy the last pictures of Billy Bob the turkey. The carnage I came home to today rocked me to my core,. What ever happened today took out 8 of my best layers and our turkey. When the numb wears off I may talk about it. The hens I lost took out my ability to pay for Billy (the Humans) horse events this summer but god will only give me what I can handle. I only have 3 layers left and egg orders I cant fill. I know that all will be ok in the am, but right now I cant stop the tears

I have made a call to get Billy(the human) a replacement Turkey a cross between a wild and a Nantucket. .
Yes I am asking for a material issue, please say a prayer that God can find me a way to pay for Billy Bob (the human) horse events this summer or it will be a long slow summer until the juvenile birds can lay and all will be ok.

I am thankful that I have a roof over our heads and food in our tummys. All will be better tomorrow.

This morning was bitter sweet. What was once a thriving flock is gone. I so wish I lived closer to you all. The one white rock made it thru the night and we found Billy Bob feathers and brought them in the house. I made a call yesterday to a friend who has turkeys, cross between wild and nantucket. I will call her back on Sunday and we will go see her. She has some month olds and some newly hatched and is out of town today but will be available tomorrow. I have not completely searched the parameter of the place yet, but I know it was not my dogs, they have been around poultry since they were born. I am thinking it was a neighbor dog got in and did the dead and got out. I wish the wind would blow to carry the feathers that are strewn about in the wind.
The animals are not as loud today it is subdued here and my heart is very heavy. Billy knows what happened he is taking it kind of hard but I know he will bounce back.
Repairs have been made to the coop last night and I will be stringing what is left of my ranch wire on the outside for added protection.
Thanks all for the comments it is just a setback one of many to come I am sure...

I have a hurt white rock in the house. I found her yesterday I thought she was dead but still breathing. I put her in the coop inside and thought if she will make it thru the night it is ment to be. She did and this afternoon I took her to the water and she drank. I figure I can keep an eye on her in the house so in a dog crate in the middle of the living room she is resting comfortably. I dont feel anything is broken, she just lays there sleeping. I am hoping she is in shock she does not move much and Billy talks to her she raises her head.

I did notice I have 4 black chickens left and I got three eggs today That is a good sign..

That's one of the most difficult parts of chicken raising is keeping them safe.

In thinking of building a coop at the horse lot the hardest part in my mind is how to keep a predator from digging under. What I would really prefer is to have a bit of concrete, one and a half feet down into the ground, not very wide, but deep. They rent machines here that dig these trenches, or so I've been told. The next option is laying wire down in an L shape, or slanted away from the run or coop. Either way, it is not an easy task.

I'm sorry for you and Billy. Surely things will get better from here on. You have much to be thankful for, a new home and the two of you are healthy and safe and have each other. That's the most important thing.

We are living and that is the important part. They ripped the wire from the wall in a small hole and that is how they got in. I buried the wire at least 10 inches underground so they could not dig under, never expecting they would rip it from the wall. The white rock is hanging on, she is in a cage in the spare room with food and water and still laying down. She moves, but just does not stand.. She is still living though..
All is well we woke up to face another day..

I am so sorry for your loss. I've posted my troubles/adventures w/the neighbor's dogs. It is indeed so hard to make the coop secure and then find oneself worrying while at work that the re-enforcements to the coop hold. I hope your injured hen pulls though, you find a good replacement turkey, and all gets back to normal soon...

Whitey died today, I think she had a broken back.
GOOD NEWS... Billy will be getting two new turkeys on Friday, he does not know yet. I found a ranch that has them and a few month olds, cross between Red and wild. I will surprise him by a tour of the ranch and then he gets to pick out his new ones. She tried to interest me in a piglett ummm no not at this time. Then she tried to intrest me in a cow... hummm no not at this time.
It was the most peaceful place, she had all kids of birds, has cows, pigs, goats and the most pretty peacocks just running with the guineas and geese. Then her husband explained some solar things to me and it was such a peaceful afternoon I did not want to leave... So on Friday morning I will take him there to look at the ranch and we will leave with the turkeys. She is giving them to me at a cost of $8 a bird, which the feed store had babies for $10. Also when she rotates her stock she will sell me some layers to replenish in a few months. All is good it was such an awesome afternoon...

Oh he is so stoked... He named them Billy and Nanny I dont get it but they are his. They are in his room and we talk to them and hold them. He reads them books. The people we got them from came by today and said they are in good hands... I will have pictures tuesday. She requested I dont take pictures at the ranch it is a private place for them and I complied. But wait till you see them at our place... They are really cool.

Billy hanging yesterday at the party... When he was a baby, I would lay horse blankets in one just like this and then put him in there and roll it up to the round pen when I worked out the horses.. LOL

Wheel barrels made the best seats when i was a kid. Its a very cute photo. Your way more moved in than I am! I still haven't gotten anything on the wall or all my stuff moved in. Got several boxes at mom's still... no idea where to put them. I need to put stuff on my very blank walls...

What a great picture of Billy in the wheelbarrow! I have never seen them used that way before. It took me a couple of minutes to realize what he was sitting in.

Grey DONT open the Closets and the Spare Room or the Garage...LOL You would be surprised..
Green. I wish I could find the pictures of when he was a baby they were cute. It was the Wheel barrel that we used to clean stalls and He would rest on a bunch of saddle blankets so he never touched the metal, and the incline was enough to help him sit up and watch. He was protected by the wind, the dogs and he had a round pen side seat. I could watch him and work with the horses at the same time. He was never close enough for the dirt to hit him.. He loves to ride in them now..

That is so cute Rosie! I love that picture.. well, both of them.. The wheelbarrow picture looks like one of those wicker chairs with the huge backs? Like to call those the queen chair.. so that looks like a King's chair which I think is appropriate..

Thanks a million for sharing the pics. You have great windows. I'll bet you could grow a garden in the sun from those windows.

I love Billy and the turkey watching TV. Looks for all the world like the turkey is engrossed in the show.

You are making a great life for Billy. He will never foreget his childhood.
