I am high desert, but gets plenty hot anyway. I need plants that if I skip a day they won't croak. Any suggestions appreciated.

http://www.highcountrygardens.com/ has a lot of suggestions. I have a ton of lemon scented geraniums http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54857/ that do well in heat with watering every other day. Want I should send you some? ^_^
