| I have a pullet (or so I thought) that will be 10 weeks this friday. Just yesterday she/he softly did a partial crow a few times only in the morning. This morning the same thing. I haven't heard her do it at all during the day. She is a barred rock and the coloring looks female to me. I'm not sure about the comb. It's the only BR I have so no others to compare her to. I have her with a RIR, Red star, BO(younger at 3 weeks old), brown leghorn and an EE(6 weeks old). They are all females I hope. I will include pictures if someone can help determine if I need to re-home him. Thanks in advance. Dawn

| Sometimes females crow when young. We have a Sebright though that is a couple of years old and she crows, strange hearing it come from a female. The comb is looking a bit red and if it looks redder and bigger than the others the same age you might have a roo. |

| I agree that the color looks female and the comb seems quite pale to be a rooster. I vote pullet. |

| It's pretty much a crow. Sebright males even have a bit of a different crow than other roos and sometimes I think it's the male crowing, but it's the female. I don't think it's as perfected as the males crow, but it's a pretty good crow. She also seems to be more aggressive than our other Sebright female. |

| Your Barred Rock sure has the beginnings of a rooster's tail.. A hen's will be straighter like praying hands.. AND as a chick, it has the white head spot.. (roo) again.. I think she is a he. Sorry! |

| Yes I see what you mean about the tail. In the first picture they are turning down at some of the tips. DARN. I was hoping it was a she. Well thank you everyone for the input. Wow I started with 9 chicks. I am down to only 3 hopeful hens only. |

| Don't get any with a white spot on the head. That's the roo sign for sure. If you have to, get small white spots or very clearly defined.. no blury edges.. I'm sorry you had bad luck, I know that's frustrating after raising them all this time.. even if it's only been a month, that is too long to get your hopes up! Good luck! |

| All my Barred Rock pullets have had white spots on their heads as chicks, but as ZZ said, they were clearly defined. The big blurry ones are a sign of roo-ness. I wouldn't totally give up hope though - if she keeps those dark feathers... Also I have a Buckeye with a turned down tail who is clearly female. What shape are the hackle feathers? |

| I don't see any pointy hackle feathers and today as I'm looking at the tail it doesn't look like there are any turned down feathers. Not much crowing this morning either. |

| Yes, that white spot is kind of big and blurry but I think I've had pullets with spots almost like that. I'm still hoping... |

| Well it has been just about a week and the crowing noise has not changed at all. Still sounds like a goose. She only does this a few times in the morning. I never hear it during the day or in the evening. But yesterday I brought home a mature serema. She can lay an egg any day now. The barred rock may have been displaying to her. Do they do some kind of mating ritual? It was walking sideways near her fluffed up and one wing down. He wasn't mean to her at all. So that may prove it is a male if that is what it was doing. I am going to a farm swap meet Saturday and guess where he is going. |

I've been in that same boat when I tried my best to wish a Dominique into pulletness..
