My Silkie Hen just started laying her first eggs this past 2weeks. An egg evryday so far! I took them from her and boiled and fed them to my Maran babies. Boy did that hurt my heart!
I heard that one should never try to hatch "first eggs". So my question is , How long should I wait for her to have good viable eggs? "ZZTop" my roo is definitely doing his part!
I cant wait to get new Silkie babies!

I`m going under the broody tonight when it gets dark and when I wake up in the morning I`ll have new brothers and sisters and a new mama.I have not had a mama cause I was hatched in an incubator.there are no others like me I`m a polish, and I know the silkies will not pick on me when I get bigger because of my hair do,Silkies have cute hair cuts to.My incubator mom will go out early in the morning to make sure I`m ok.I`m a little bigger and a week older but I think it will work out.

Eufaula, I'd wait a few months at least... well, if you can stand it anyway. A new layer takes a while before her cycle is consistent and there are no doubles, or eggs that aren't right. Sure hard to wait if you've been dyin for them already! :)

Green, that is the cutest lil polish baby ever! Good luck! I hope it works out. :)

Sigh. Yesterday was "hatch" day for my Tiny Turkens, but no sign of anything. I'm afraid it was just too hot for her. Maybe in the fall...

Well, there were bits of shell, but whether it was a live chick, or a failed attempt eaten, I don't know.

I value my hand, and prefer to keep my blood inside my circulatory system *G*. No. I haven't picked her up. I can;t really get to her easily, the drop cage over her is pretty secure, and I'd have to do some manuevering to get to her. There is a food/water door, but it has very rough edges :(. I'll wait a day or so, and then disassemble it all.
It's been up there temp wise, topping at 100 one day, generally mid-upper 90's, with higher heat indexes. She is in a shed, with a fan and good air circulation. There's another little broody hen back in the corner, who I can't get to either, without taking down shelves. How do they do it?? I didn't even know there was a nest...

Isn't it hard to imagine brooding during triple digits??? Uggghhh!! I have 2 new Serama babiez that hatched during 100 degree heat.. I don't know how, but they are here! Out of 7 eggs, that's not great.. but I'm glad to have them..

Yes it hard to imagine that,it was in the high 80`s here yesterday and the silkies were panting.Still got eggs hatching under one silkie.I`ve lost count of the new babies,I think 28.Big fight broke out yesterday between two of the mothersmone was trying to get in her nesting box,had to net one in a childs butter fly net while I put the screen around the other box ,those little nets are great she did not move at all while she was in that.So babies were going everywhere and I couldn`t remember which baby went with what mother but they didn`t seem to mind as long as they had babies and they are all about the same age.Jadee is the only one that does not fight and lets me hold her babies and lift her up,what a difference hand raising a chick verses not.

All the broodies left there nests and there was still three eggs left and one had pipped,it also had blood on it,I was going to let nature take its coarse but dh said we needed to try to hatch it,after going through the little polish deal and then having it die I did not want to interven,I thought that the mother had left it for a reason, but dh was so adament about it that I brought out the little incubator and put water in it and a wet sponge because the membrane had really dried out on the egg.Thinking that it would not make it I kept checking on it and about 6 hours later it hatched, still thinking it would not make it I left in there until tonight(it hatched last night)then took it out and put it under Jadee my sikies that I rasied and stayed out there for a while and it stayed under her,so heres hoping in the morning it will be ok and know enough to eat and drink. My house is chicken free untill Aug.6th and then my 40 eggs will start to hatch. The other two eggs I threw away. Its a cute little black one.

A lavender will be all the same color.. not darker on the head or tail.. if the head &/or tail are dark, they are blue. That one looks to have white in the pic, so I'd say splash? I'm no expert on Silkies by any means. :) Sure are cute baby pics!! The new set up is awesome.
