Let's see YOUR pictures of hostas beginning with "H and I"

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

For Sunday we'll look at hostas that begin with H or I.

The first one - 'Halcyon'. Another which I've had for a long time. But mine wasn't growing fast at all. Divided it 2 years ago and now have 2 that are the size of what I had before. I think it liked being lifted, divided and replanted - I likely enriched the soil. This picture taken July 16. It's blooming right now at the end of August, but I don't have a pic.

'Harpoon' was new in spring 2008 and is an enthusiastic, upright hosta, though not too big (I don't have many large ones - no space). This picture taken July 19.

'Heavenly Tiara' was on a sale table at my local hosta nursery this year; so it's new. This photo taken July 8 when it was still in a pot. I now have a space for it in the garden.

'Hidden Cove' taken June 20. this hosta has been decimated by slugs and earwigs this year. A candidate for a copper collar next year. It was new spring 2008.

'High Society' was new spring 2008 and this picture was taken July 19 though it looks just as good today and is flowering. (I took a pic yesterday and may post it later). This one and its relatives always look good throughout the season.

'Holy Mouse Ears' taken July 19 was new spring 2009 and seems to be getting progressively smaller each year.

'Hope' June 29 was new spring 2003 but has had some real set-backs the last couple of years.

'Ice Age Trail' taken June 20. Was new to me spring 2006 but languished in a dark corner until 2009 when I moved it. Since then I've seen modest growth each year and it has bloomed both years - or rather, it's about to bloom this year.

'Ice Cream' - a member of the 'Vanilla Cream' family of sports. I've had it since spring 2007 and this pic was taken June 22.

'Illicit Affair' taken June 22. This was new to my garden spring 2008. In spring 2010, I divided it up and planted it in a group of 3 plants, one of which was again divided for sale this spring.

'Invincible' was new to me September 2005 and this pic was taken July 16. I love its glossy green leaves.

'Invincible' blooms late August. This pic taken August 23.

'Island Charm' taken July 15. Mine was new spring 2005 and has definitely been a very slow grower for me and mine has much shorter leaf petioles than on others I've seen. Still, it's holding up quite well in the garden.

Rose - I love the 'Hands Up'. Might have to get myself one of those. How old is your plant?

And please check your pic of 'Hope'. Either you've posted the wrong pic or you 'Hope' was mislabelled, I think. While the colour looks similar to some of those at the Hosta Library, the size is wrong as 'Hope' is a real mini.

Oquawka, IL(Zone 5a)

I'll have to check Hope out. I have it in my mini bed, so I must've been having a senior moment! I just got Hands Up this spring from Naylor Creek.

I've been wanting 'Hands Up' too. Here's my 'Ice Cream' planted three days ago and uprooted by some animal two days in a row. GRRRRRR.

Good luck with that 'Ice Cream'. I had that happen with 'White Dove' last year. Seems a bit slower this year, but your 'Ice Cream' seems a good sized plant. It should survive the digging up.

This was how I found my 'White dove' last year.

Inniswood was already fully mature when I took over the garden. It's probably the one hosta that made me take notice and identify the dozen or so varieties already here. While I'm all into yellows and ruffles right now, the corrugation on these leaves is simply amazing.

Rose , Hope is a real beauty. Nice little Hosta. But what is the big one in-front of your tree?? I think I have seen that before and I really want one. Do you remember where you got it??

Oquawka, IL(Zone 5a)

VirginiaRose,

The one that I posted as 'Hope' is really 'Unforgettable'. I got it from Hornbaker's in 2007. They do have a website and sell online.

Eleven, your 'Inniswood' is spectacular.

There are two 'Halcyon' in this bed. 'June' in front really took off this year. Two 'Gold Standards' are on the right and left. I took this picture in May. All the hostas in this bed are going to be divided next spring to give them more room.

It really is beautiful, thanks for the post.

Irawon,

Your June is beautiful. I'm definitely going to move mine next spring!

Portsmouth, VA(Zone 8a)

irawon, beautiful Hosta garden and love that 'June', can't wait for mine to get big. Gold standard is very nice too, might get one of those.
'Inniswood' and 'Unforgettable' are going on my wish list, thanks for the pictures.

This is 'Hudson Bay' he is a new addition and hasn't quite gotten over the 'mail-order-shock' or is it?

I also just bought Hudson Bay but they have a ways to go before they look like this.

Isn't Hudson Bay supposed the be the new and improved version of Eskimo Pie? I had Eskimo Pie , and after 3 years it suffered a slow, painful death. I hope that Hudson Bay will do better for me. It is a pretty one.

'High Society' planted in 2007 and picture taken on September 8. The blue edge on mine has greened up.

'Holy Mouse Ears' on May 11, 2011. Planted in 2009. There a lot of little seedlings around HME. 'Salute' is in the vicinity. Two yellow ones look interesting.
