red opal?

Corning, CA(Zone 8a)

red rock found in tehama county california. any ideas? it seems metamorphic type of chert mixes or opaline sort of. upon close inspection there are translucent veins of some quartz like appearance. I really feel that this specimin represents something that was once alive. perhaps an algae bog with worms and other things that fossilized? there are octopus like transparent features in there... this is why i believe it to be Opaline something.
