I have a south facing wooden porch that needs something to break its monotony. I do not want a trellis fixed to it and neither do I want very heavy climbers that I do love like the wisteria. Would you please suggest some vines for the place that would lend some color and interest to the place and yet be not too heavy on the structure just in case it escapes to the vinyl siding of the walls
To give you more specific information, it would be helpful to know what zone you garden in (http://www.garden.org/zipzone/index.php?img=neusa). One possibility, if you live somewhere in U. S. zones 3-9, is the perennial sweet pea that I mention in this article. The vines are very light-weight. You'll probably need tie them to a support in the spring to encourage them to climb upward instead of sprawling on the ground. In my garden they self-sow moderately if you don't deadhead.
