Thanks for reminding me, Michelle! I knew we were getting close :)

The picture I used this time is from my very first swap after joining DG- it was the frog swap and I received that welcome sign. That's a very young Miss Sarah checking it out .. I think she was around 3 months old at the time.

Here's a recent pic of her.. she's grown just a little!

I'm looking forward to the sock, sniff, sip. With these kinds of swaps do we put seed in too. Or is it basically like getting a present and then filling the empty box with the presents for the next person? I'm new to all of this so I'm trying to get the idea of each one. I really like the gardening in the new year one. Robyn

Thanks, Chris :)
Robyn, it really depends on the swap you join. Each swap describes the rules you're to follow at the beginning of the thread. I haven't done many of these yet, either, but here's what I've figured out so far. Some swaps, or round robins, have you take something (like seeds or plants) out and put others in for others to choose from. Other swaps give each participant the name of someone they are to send to, and you send the items as described in the rules for that swap (anything from seeds/plants to windchimes to food, etc). And then there's the birthday club where each participant sednds all of the other participants something (cards for 2012) on their birthdays and they send you something (again, cards for 2012) for your birthday. Feel free to follow some of the links to the various swaps to read more about them. Even if they're already closed, it will still give you a better idea of how things work. Hope this helps :)

Hello all. I'm thinking of maybe putting up the sign up thread for the Sock, Sniff and Sip swap. Sounds like there is going to be plenty of interest. I think I may put it up next week for delivery around the middle to end of January. This swap will be a person to person swap. Each person will be assigned a recipient and will send to and receive from one person. Boxes need to be sent with a delivery confirmation number sent to me so I can keep track of delivery of everyone's boxes, and follow through if one does not arrive. Thanks everyone for your interest!

I see you plan on a Windchime Swap in February. I have had my eye on some neat ones and thinking about this swap. Are you still going to do it in February, or later on or at all?????

The Sock, Sniff and Sip Swap is in it's final stages. REVEAL THREAD!!!! This had been a huge success with 19 participants. I think this will continue to be a yearly January swap. Everyone has had so much fun with it.

Thanks!

Patti, it's up there and yes, I'm going to do my windchime swap-- so start gathering up those windchimes!

I'm sorry I've been MIA on DG.. life has been totally crazy for me- planning a trip in March to Cozumel, looking for a place to buy (NOT in Cozumel, dang it!), mandatory OT of minium 8 hrs each week, son in law in the hospital, and on and on...

And this weekend, I have 3 grandsons coming over to go to Battle At the Barn with me.. they're 14, 14 and 13.. this will be FUN!
BATB is indoor racing of go-carts, riding lawnmowers, golf carts, basically anything small.. and just for the heck of it, they smear coca-cola syrup on the concrete track to make it slick. Gage and I went last year and he's been waiting impatiently for it to come around again :)

Hey, who else is thinking of hostessing a swap this year?? It looks kind of bare up at the top.. let's get a list of upcoming swaps going cause that gives us something to look forward to while we're snowed in!

That is GREAT Robyn. The SSS swap was my first one to hostess. I've been in a lot of swaps, and the fact that this one has run so smoothly has me hooked. lol

I know one suggestion that I was interested in that I didn't see take place was a dishtowel swap and a pet toy swap. We also had a painted rock swap last year. I wonder if the hostess is doing another one of those? I enjoyed that!

Terrific! I added both of them. :) LK, I won't be doing the chime swap in April..if I finally start doing the 2nd one, it'll be in Sept.

Patti, I'm guessing you're doing a St Patrick day swap.. so maybe things that are green only or have the names of 'shamrock, Ireland, Patrick, Patty' etc in them? Don't want to make it too challenging though :)

Robyn, you will have a blast when you do host your first one! And if you're nervous about doing one on your own, there are plenty of 'seasoned' hostesses around to co-host with you!

I did so many last year that I decided to sit out the holiday swaps this year since I'm not a big holiday decorating type of person ... but I'm definitely in for LK's frog swap which I've never done, as well as ClanC's windchime swap this year (one anyway).

I've already started shopping (which should come as no surprise to anyone). :-D)))

Boy, did we start filling up quick! I love it :)

Betty, Heavenscape (Jaye) did the Trash to Treasure a couple of years ago, but we didn't have one last year at all. You'll do great as the hostess for this one..you're so darn crafty! :)
I hope she's going to do the Red, White and Blue swap for July- that's a very popular swap.

Neener, I'm sorry you won't be hostessing swaps this year..you always do such a wonderful job!

Crit, I put the Painted Rock in Oct for now- I remember that we used that swap more for the colder time of year as everyone is so involved with gardens during the spring/summer.. so if you want it at another time, just let me know where to move it :)

Maybe the dish towel could be another cold weather swap.. I don't think we have a hostess for that, so maybe Robyn will consider it (IF she wants to, of course!!) for late in the year.
The Pet Toy one can be a short and sweet swap..maybe open it as an interest thread for both dog and cat owners to see how many will be interested in joining, since we've never done one before. Wouldn't take up alot of time since it's just for pet toys.

We'll also have to see if Julie (Froggie'sGirl) is going to do a birdfeeder swap again.. then we also have the 3B swap .. the PJ swap...
wow... so many fun ones! lol..

Sorry you aren't doing any hosting Neener, but I will be GLAD to do the rock swap. Yes Chris, October is FINE for a swap. Maybe open the end of Sept. and mail out the first part of Oct., as I suspect there will be a Halloween Swap the end of the month. That one was fun too!!!!! Love Fruity's "Neck of the Woods" swap, and someone did a Thanksgiving swap in November which was good. Aw shoot, I just love swaps (can you tell????) Haven't been in any that I 'didn't' like! ^-^

Neener, were there any other swaps you have done that you will not be doing? I would be glad to take them over.

Well ya'll know me and my snake phobia...can't go there whether they're dead, alive, imagined or in a picture.

Patti, What if you kicked up the decorated rock swap a notch and called it a decorated hardscape swap? You could add the possibilities of embellishing a pot, make a stepping stone, doing a decoupage craft, or of course decorating a rock. I had such fun doing my buddy's with glass mosaics. Crazy thing is I never made one for myself! Anyway those are some suggestions that might entice more participants since each of our crafting abilities is different. Just kicking around ideas whether you decide to use them or not.

There should be another Raise My Baby contest, and of course our Christmas exchange.

Edited to mention our next Houseplants / Tropicals round will begin in mid-May or early June. If you're bored with Winter and have the room or inkling, you could start cuttings or plant seeds so your seedlings would be large enough to share by Summer.

The closer we get to the gathering the more I wonder if I will be able to make it. DH had to use his vacation time when he was sick the first of the month. And with only 1 income and his commission work not very high at the moment, I'm not able to save anything. Will have to see the closer it gets.

Yes, that makes more sense Cindy.

Betty, he died of a heart attack at 46 years old. He was an old fashioned, house call making doctor. I can remember traveling all over around towns where we lived for him to make housecalls. Or the phone ringing in the middle of the night (my room was by theirs) and daddy getting up and leaving with his little black bag. I was only 6. They weren't going any kind of heart surgeries in '64. Same year JFK died.

Thanks Betty. Yes, even though I was so young when he passed. I remember, surprisingly, a lot of him. My mom once said it was because she had told me or something, but I told her stories of things when she wasn't there and my brothers confirmed. lol He always made time for us kids. We had a boat and spent a lot of time at the lake, when we weren't at our little farm riding horses. ^_^ Mom was afraid of the water, she couldn't swim ... and was afraid of horses. So a lot of time was spent with dad doing those things.

I know what you mean, Betty!

October and November are open. I don't decorate outside for Halloween like I used to, but do change the flags and hang Fall wreaths. The trick-or-treaters we used to have are grown and the little ones in our neighborhood now either go to their schools or the mall to do their begging. Just noticed no one has claimed November for a Thanksgiving swap yet. I'm not volunteering, just making an observation.

I've missed our monthly plant swaps, Susie, and am so glad you decided to bring them back. You know I'll participate in as many months as I can. It's such a pleasure to walk my gardens, admire a particular plant, and think of the person who took the time to share it with me.

Cris, I read your thread and it sounds like you all are going to have a wonderful day and time together.

Sometime ago we were talking about a Flag Swap. Wonder if flags could be included when someone hosts a Dishcloth Swap? Both are lightweight and postage wouldn't be much. Just a thought. I went to change our Winter flags today and realized I have none that are appropriate for in-between Winter and Spring. Guess the ones of Winter birds I found at Lowe's several years ago, and "Let it Snow" that you gave me Carole will do for another month.

What do y'all think about a new swap, "Something Old, something new, something borrowed and something blue?" I couldn't sleep last night and for some reason that kept creeping into my head. Old could be an established plant, something repurposed, something made by hand (old style). New could be anything. Borrowed is a bit of a trouble, but could be something the giver didn't buy, or... Blue could actually be the receiver's favorite color, something in that color.

Just had a thought, what about gifted instead of borrowed. One item wrapped like a gift?

Ideas????

Those are excellent ideas, Joy, and you've got my wheels turning. Could borrowed be a plant someone has shared that's ready to divide? It might just be me but often think of plants others have given me as borrowed and I'm merely their caretaker. You know whatever you decide for each category, I'll go with the flow.

Chris, I hope you had a big ol' slushy margarita tonight to celebrate your birthday!

Joy, that could be a really fun swap.. with the name like that, it should be limited to only the 4 items :) For some of us, that can be a real challenge LOL

Cool, now when would be a good time? There is the frog swap in April but I don't know if it is early or late, the next light month is June. I have never hosted a swap before so I will definitely need help, but it could really be fun. Wow, I hadn't thought of limiting it to just the four things, that could be a hardship on some of us overachievers.

Joy, June makes sense as this is a common month for weddings and that rhyme is wedding-related :)
How about the "something borrowed" being something that is re-gifted? Perhaps you could let the sender pick which of these ideas works best for them?
Sounds like it could be a lot of fun :)

From Weddingbee:

Something old - continuity with the bride's family and the past
Something new - optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead
Something borrowed - an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride
Something blue - Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."

Cool, June it is. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue Swap.
A four item swap that encompasses the spirit of the WeddingBee. Old could be an established plant, something repurposed, something made by hand (old style). New could be anything. Borrowed is a regifted item, something the giver didn't buy, or a plant that was given and has been divided, something that the giver has had good fortune with. Blue would actually be the receiver's favorite color, or something in that color.I will also add a mystery item, one extra to make your box special to the recipient. The skill will be in the limit of items and how to interpret the original rhyme.

Sedum NOID

Wow, great box Deejay! So thrilled with all these plants. I love the surprise horseradish plant. I have always wanted it but forgot to put it on my wnt list. Although I've added a lot of purely ornamental flowers to my garden this year, I like to boast that I have so many edibles--like fig trees, jerusalem artichoke and blueberry bushes--now I can add horseradish to the mix. And chives, I have garlic chives but not these traditional onion kind. Plus the sedums and semps will help complete my stone stairway project. Lily of the valley and fern have a spot reserved in the new shade garden.
Can't load pix from my iPhone or iPad so I will add that tomorrow:

Sedum ogon z5
Blue spruce sedum
Horseradish
Chives
Semi fuel
Speedway semi
Lemon spry semi
Arachnoidium sparkle
Fern
Lily of valley
Euphorbia polychroma
