the yule log is one of the winter traditions that makes sense to me. we have a few "all-nighters"...big, gnarly, knotty trunks or tree crotches we keep on the woodpile for those long, dark freezing nights.

thank you for covering the part about the meat and drink feast. makes perfect sense. vikings.

i am contemplating a maple and walnut spice buche de noel...something from actual trees.

What an excellent idea! One recipe I saw had a sprinkling of pistachios. Black walnuts would be good too.
