When I shut my lid it turns my laptop off, shouldn't just go into sleep mode instead of turning off?

Check your power settings - maybe you have it set for hibernate insead of standby.

Sometimes I turn mine off, sometimes hibernate and other times I just close the lid and it 'goes to sleep' .

What is the state of your power - AC or battery? Both of these can have different settings. For instance when I close my lid I had it going to standby when it was on AC but for battery power I have it hibernating.

Hibernation turns everything off but saves an image of everything in memory to the hard drive whereas standby keeps everything in memory but refreshes it with a small amount of power. Standby comes up much quicker but hibernation beats a restart for speed. To come out of hibernation, hit the power button and let it restore memory from disk.

tcs, some computers with XP have hibernate while others may not (maybe it is a setting in the registry). Weird, huh? Open the "adjust power" applet and see if the last tab is "hibernate". If it is there, enable it and then set it for your defaults in one of the other tabs. No guarantee that will work because my new work laptop has that feature and it is enabled but it does not work properly so I just use standby.

Don, I'm glad you asked this question. I had no idea what the difference was between standby and hibernation. And it's something I think I need to know.

So in hibernation, everything shuts off, but any work you have up at the time is saved automatically? So if I accidentally close the lid on my laptop, forgetting to save my work first, I won't lose if I have my settings right?

At the office, I came in to find my boss' laptop on my desk. It was open and running. My coworker said my boss was gone for several hours and she closed the laptop and put on the boss' desk. I asked if she saved everything before she did that because a spreadsheet was up. She said, no, surely the boss did.

When the boss returned, she was so upset! She hadn't saved anything and had worked for hours on the spreadsheet. But when we turned the laptop back on, everything came up. None of us knew how that happened. So now perhaps I do?? I'm going to make sure my new laptop is set up that way too. Thanks for asking this question, Don.

Anybody that works for hours on a document without saving frequently deserves just what they will get sooner or later. On the other hand, most office programs can and should be set to make saves on their own often.

NancyAnn - Yes if everything works the way it is supposed to. I make it a habit to hit ctrl s if I even step away from my computer for 5 seconds. I have cats and cats are more than willing to set on my keyboard. I've come back and found things like 57 replies open to an email.

the Hibernate never showed up in my shut down options..l but i went back in and on the first tab, power settings, where it gave an option of hibernate [at teh bottom] I had "never" . after I reboot, i'll check again.

I recall with older versions of Office, it would not auto-save, so I too got in the habit of saving often. I had office 03 or 05, and Excel had a bad habit of crashing, and i'd lose everything... so i'd save about every 2 min.

due to having cats now, which is still sort of new to me - even after 3 yrs... I never leave the lid up on my laptop... with my Tower, i have a keyboard shelf under the desktop... so they don't walk there -- thank heavens.

Yeah, I don't know why hibernate doesn't work on some laptops and others it does (I've had Dell and HP and both can work or not work). Choose standby for your next option.

Autosave is a great idea and usually comes set at 10 minutes on most Office Apps. It can be a lifesaver at times.

I've always had autosave on my PCs, but never used a laptop enough to need it. I was surprised my boss didn't have autosave or think to save her document when she knew she was leaving the office. She said when she was at her meeting, she thought about texting us to save her work, but she didn't. I guess someone was looking out for her and must have put her laptop in hybernate mode automatically. Even with autosave, I frequently save my work, especially in spreadsheets, which are more difficult for me to create than a simple word document. I hate losing even a minute of my work.

OH -- my Hibernate finally did show up... but I have to put the cursor over the "Standby" and it says "to hibernate in stead, hold down the shift key"

I tried to get a screen capture of it, but it wouldn't take the whole thing... at least I know now it is an option.

Don, I prefer my desktop to my laptop. I just use my laptop for portable situations. People ask me why I have both a laptop and a desktop. The laptop, quite frankly, is just too small. I'd get carpal tunnel syndrome if I had to type it on it all day. But it's great to take to family reunions or vacations to show pics of my gardens and my family and just to check email and such.

Hi Nancy, yep,I still use my desktop most the time, easy and love the XP over the windows 7,on my laptop if the cursor gets close to something it changes to that item, where on XP you still have to click to get a change, and getting use to the touch pad is something else, only type with 2 fingers so Not worried I'll get carpel tunnel!!!LOL
