Do you have the wire cages from your old lamp shades? This will make it easier. You could also buy appropriate sized shades from a second hand store. Joannes Fabric has the lampshade fabric and you cover the wire cage with it using hot glue. At that point you can decorate it anyway you wish using hot glue. Hope this helps.
I also want to make my own DIY lamp shade. What will I use for the covering of the lamp shade? Is there any special material so it will not be burnt? I will also use my old wire cages. Thank you for the tip. Can you post a picture once you have done your lamp shade? Thank you!
You can also make your custom designs with rubber stamps. Since you won't be washing the lamp shade, any kind of ink will work. Try fitting the fabric around your shade, then stamping your design before you glue it on. http://bit.ly/1svi99L
