Hi my name is Cindy (aka purpbutfly) and I am hosting a 3 B House Swap

Bats, Birds and Butterfly House
The swap is moving to Spring so there will not be one in August like there was last year. And I will have it at this time every year.

I am opening it February 20tht, and will take names until March 5th, then posts your buddy name and address on the March 6th. I would like to ask you all to mail your buddies house so that she may get it before the first day of Spring, March 20th. If you are not in the address exchange please dmail me your addy.

It does not have to be home made, it can be bought. If you want to make a homemade one it can be made out of ANYTHING,( old cowboy boots, cowboy hats, cans, gourds, you name it.) If a bird can get in it, it's a house, but bat houses and butterfly houses are a special type of house. I posted some links, that tell about bat and butterfly houses. Pictures alone do not qualify, but if you want to decorate with pictures that will work.

Anything goes so long as there is either Bat, Bird or Butterfly with a House, inside decoration or outside decoration. Here are some links to give you some ideas for your houses.

When signing up please specify what type of house you want

Count me in!!

I would really prefer a bat house, it was on my list to add to the yard this spring. If that is not possible for my buddy I will take a bird or butterfly house.

There is a guy who makes the neatest bird, bat and butterfly houses about 45 minutes from me. They are way over the money limit but all use old wood and details and last a long time. I have his butterfly house and several of his bird houses.

Aha...thought I recognized it too.

So far we've seen two waves of Robins, hundreds of them at a time flocked in our Cherry tree, along with several Cedar Waxwings we usually only see in January. Companions were a lone Red-Bellied woodpecker and several Cardinals. Some of our year-round residents are woodpeckers, Eastern Bluebirds, and Cardinals. Just yesterday I watched a pair of Bluebirds already making their nest in one of our boxes. I can't wait to hear the Phoebes and Carolina Wrens sing again.

There are a number of robins in the backyard now and cardinals all over the place ... the bright red males colored-up preparing for mating season are stunning in the trees and on the ground when you look out the window. There are splashes of red everywhere! ♥♥♥

If I knew that whoever is going to be my buddy for this swap is wanting a birdhouse- I almost bought 2 today! Such cute homes at a consignment shop called "Things On Douglas". I go there all the time cause they have very kitschy types of items (some consigned, but a lot are new!).
The problem is that a lot of these are one of a kind- so if you don't buy them when you see them, they will probably be gone the next time you go there lol.. it's happened to me before!

Maybe I'll go back tomorrow and grab those 2 houses anyway LOL

Chris... if you see it and it's special and at a good price, grab it or regret it. I have a 'gift' closet with my some-day-a-gift stash. It also comes in handy if i'm doing a house project. Don't hesitate to buy them and gift them to yourself if your buddy isn't a bird-house person. You live once.

I also buy future repurposed yard art stuff that eventually make it into projects. For example, recently bought a spring bed frame at an estate sale for $25 that will be going into the garden as a trellis. This is one made a few yrs back out of two adult and one child frames. I don't have arecent picture right now of the plantings that were put around it or the chinese wisteria that's now in it's second year on it (replacing a honeysuckle that prooved too invasive).

You're right about grabbing or regretting lol.. I've done that before!

Love your bed springs project, FLStu. I've been on the lookout for some to make trellises like that for my new clematis, and I'm sure I'll find some when the weather warms and yard sales get going full speed again.

Meanwhile, I snagged these old treadle sewing machine drawers to turn into planters once the weather warms. Well, the weather hasn't really been very cold at all this year, but you know what I mean. I'm chomping at the bit to get going outdoors again. :)

Oh, how often I haven't grabbed things when I saw them. They are never there when I go back. ;-)

Cvlle. Consider saving the one with the good handle and back plate and maybe changing the borken handle out with a drawer with no back plate. The hardware is great. I use one in my family room for remote controls. They also can be great guest hand towel caddy's for cloth towels rolled and stood on end, or paper towels placed on end the long way down. They usually just need a bit of furnature polish to bring back their vintage glow.

Carole, I thought about you yesterday after seeing the tornadoes that hit your neck of the woods and am so glad to see you post. The only BF's I've seen this year are the ones still affixed on the rock you gave me. It's held up very nicely! Of all things, I saw a fly land on one of our back porch screens today while I was out there planting veggie seeds.

The Bradford pears have all just burst into full bloom around here. It's a spectacle to behold ... also the flowering cherries, some of the magnolias, forsythias, flowering quince, daffs. Soothes the winter-weary soul ... even though we didn't have much of a winter.

I'm so ready for my hardy hibiscus!!

Several years ago we rented the same cabin a couple of years in a row on an island at the Outer Banks of NC, a really primitive cabin that Hurricane Isabelle washed away. On one of our trips, I woke up in the middle of the night to go potty in the bathroom that was on one end of the screen-in porch. The mama and baby coons we had hand fed bread and popcorn to earlier in the day had opened the screen door that wasn’t latched and were eating the tomatoes and peaches ripening in the window sills. Those buggers scared the willies out of me, well what wouldn’t in the middle of the night? While I did a little jig on top of the kitchen table yelling and screaming, hubby shooed them back outside with the persuasion of a broom. Hard to believe this pic is 10 years old.

Susan, what a little cutie! I scream like a maniac with critters moving about in the middle of the night, too!

This nosy little stinker and I scared each other half to death one night. I went to let the dog out and she started wagging her tag (meant she saw someone to play with) and when I looked up, all our eyes met, and then we all screamed. I slammed the door, the dog peed in the floor, and the little skunk skedaddled out of there!

And you weren't sprayed? I don't know how true it is, but our ex-mail lady who loves and raises all kinds of critters, both tame and wild, told us if you hold a skunk off the ground by it's tail, it isn't able to spray but it could still bite. True or not, I don't ever want to get that close to one.

Hubby is notorious for leaving the back door to our garage open all day when the weather is nice. So far this week, the cats have claimed three baby trophy moles, and are excellent mousers. Earning their keep or else I'd be dancing on the closest surface again. What I don't like is when they capture baby and adult birds :(

Ewwwww skunks, lol one night my mom came home from bowling. She walked into the laundry room to go in door to kitchen, when opened the door something ran in ahead of her. She kept calling "MIA!!, MIA!! come here (my grandson's cat) Well, Mia was not coming so she walked down the hall towards where "Mia" went except only it wasn't Mia! Yup here was this skunk walking towards my mom, she ran out the side door, left it propped open, ran around the house to my bedroom window, told me don't go out your door there's a skunk in the house. My bedroom door was not shut tight and it could have wandered in there!!! How my mom was able to walk into the laundry room and not get sprayed is a wonder, the skunk was eating the cats food and when she opened the door to go into the house she must of scared him and he ran in, trying to get out of her way.

I don't remember any spraying, but we didn't go back out that night either. The next night he showed up again and I tried to snap the picture through the crack in the door (sorry for the blurry pic). We decided he might be after the pizza boxes the boys had shoved into the recycle bins, so we removed them and haven't seen him since.

Send those kitties over here, we have plenty of moles and voles for them!

What a great recollection, Cindy. I felt like I was right there with your Mom. Have you seen the commercial with a lady who has bad eyesight thinking a skunk was her cat?

Bev, I named our runt kitty Round-Up since she was the last of of four born, rounding out the litter so to speak, plus she was born the same day we held our RU last May. How original a name is that? Anywho, she's prego. Her mom is Siamese and her dad is a black & white Tuxedo. Hubby saw a big Tabby at the edge of our field when she was in heat. She may literally have a mosaic litter. Who knows? So be careful what you wish for or I'll bring one of her kitties to you at this year's RU...lol

Oh my gosh!! Mom and I laugh every time we see that commercial, but it's not really funny to my mom. She has 3 fish ponds in her yard 2 100 gallon and a 250 gallon which I dug the hole for, Oh my aching back. Anyhoooooooooo one night we came home from bowling and noticed the cement walk in front of laundry room was wet. At first we were puzzled then it hit!!! I ran in the house, got a flash light, ran out to fish ponds...

A raccoon had pulled the wire apart on the cover of the pond, got in there with her babies (at least we think) and ate all but 2 goldfish. There were about 50 goldfish in there. This is not the first time it has happened but it is the only time they ate that many fish, so that is why we think it was a family. All ponds now have new wire covers, but not many fish left. We had at one time 300, we are down to about 80 - 85. I have to go to moms soon and get them cleaned for spring, they start laying eggs from April - July, mom is constantly watching and waiting for them to lay so she can snatch up the eggs before the fish eat them. She puts silk lily pads in there too. Out of thousands of eggs, only a few hatch, but they still get eaten. So mom raises them in the house until they get too big for tank, then out they go!! But the last couple of years have not been to good so maybe this year!

Those are nice size ponds. No wonder your back hurt after digging them. It sounds like your Mom really loves her fish, and I hope she has a bumper crop this year, Cindy. It must be a thrill for her watching them grow. Sorta attune to growing seedlings when we can hardly wait for blooms or a harvest.

Susan, If I thought a RoundUp, Jr kitty would take out the moles, I'd gladly accept one, but we live near a campground and people leave/lose their pets which run wild through the woods. The dogs are easy to catch and can sometimes be placed in local homes, but the feral cats have just about cleaned out the bunny population and don't seem to have discovered the tunneling ground critters. We figure the moles are after all the worms in the raised beds and compost piles. The voles use the mole tunnels to chomp the roots and stems off my seedlings! Aaaah, Mother Nature! Surely a natural balance will be struck before long!

Cindy, I love that eyesight commercial, too!! Now I'll think of you and your mom every time I see it, LOL. I sure didn't need to hear about the goldfish-eating raccoons though!!! I have 5 goldies in a 100+ gallon pond that I have nursed through 4 winters under a mesh cover. The feral cats, a skunk, and one of the neighbor's dogs have all tried to get to the fish without success, but I'm really worried about hungry raccoons and black bears. My fish are too big for the fish tank now, so they're stuck out there to fend for themselves!

I sure hope your mom has lots of baby gold guys this year!!

Here's a pic of my little pond with it's cover in the fall.

No problem guys, they are very easy to make, I have been making them since college adn they don't require any cooking skills.

Jar sliced hamburger dills
Jar sliced jalapenos (equal size)
Bag of sugar

Drain pickles, discard juice. Drain jalapenos, keep juice. Repack the jars, mixing a few jalapenos into the pickles, or 50/50. More peppers mean hotter pickles.
Gently pour sugar into jars, shaking and using a slender knife to work the sugar all the way down. Continue until you cannot add any more. Gently pour most of the jalapeno juice into the pickles, the rest into the jalapenos. This will help the sugar to dissolve.

Screw the lids on tight and invert several times. Set on counter, turn upside down day 1, right side up day 2, repeat until all sugar has dissolved. Refrigerate for at least a week or cold pack canning jars and water bath process.

It is very easy. We keep half gallon jars in the fridge all the time. The peppers are great mixed in chevre, cream cheese, on hamburgers, casseroles, straight out of the jar. Remember not to skimp on the sugar, and I haven't ever tried them with stevia so I can't say if it tastes as good. What is nice is the fact that you can do any size jar, so you can try a small one. Some folks just throw away the jalapenos, I find that they go faster than the pickles when set out at a function, they are quite addictive.

Joy

We just lost a huge tree off the west side of the house with all this rain the past two days. Very fortunate that it fell straight out and only did a little damage to my side fence, of course I don't know how my blackberries and grapes fared. Evan was out there the last break in the rain working on cutting a few of the branches off the fence but we are now back inside watching it pour.

Mine was mailed out today.. I wrote on the outside of the box "Sorry, there are no cookies inside".. whoever is getting this box will understand when they see it LOL..

I will have a ton of pics to share when I get back..I'll be leaving the day after tomorrow and be back on the 24th- so just carry on without me, as I won't have internet there (not even taking a laptop!)

Cindy, what a cute birdhouse!

Kris and Kathy, such pretty little girls! I guess you gotta keep them busy just like the boys (even if it means locking 'em down, lol)!

Sorry I'm just now getting to show off the goodies Carole sent me. I'm really excited about all of it! We've been talking about making a bat house, so DH really inspected it, lol. Here's a list of the pretties in my box:
- Bat house
- Butterfly wind spinner
- A little Elf Feller sittin' on a ladder to watch over my mini gardens
- Mojito mint (this has got to be good to live up to the name, haha)
- Tennessee ostrich fern, a welcome member to my growing fern collection (how did you know?)
- Lion King dutch iris bulbs, real beauties
- and the sweetest card!

Carole, you are very generous! I'm one lucky girl to have had you as a swap buddy! I hope I can do the same for mine!
Thank you so very much!!!!!!!!

Oh, Kathy, just what I wanted! (I almost bought one last week ... I get so impatient sometimes. lol.) I'm very glad I waited because the one I was going to buy wasn't as nice as this one and it wasn't approved by the North American Bluebird Society either, as I recall. Thank you so much! This one is great with the side door that makes it easy to observe the nesting going on inside and to clean it.

And all the wonderful seeds (oh my):
Osteospermum, orange and yellow
Cosmos bipinnatus, red, pink, white, bicolor
Scabiosa celulara/yellow pincushion flower
Daucus carota (love this one!)
Lilium lancer - white trumpet lily (very fragrant)
Ammi visigna

I'm in hog heaven!! ^_^

Oh, so glad it made it...I was going to send one I made at garden club but was larger and couldn't find a bigger box. Also, I wasn't sure if there is a difference in Eastern and Western bluebird houses. I contacted the bluebird society to ask but they never got back to me. Am so glad you like it and the seeds also. If your interested I have some Q A L that will bloom this year, should I ship?

pix: Daucus carota at 6-7ft at my daughter's house, where I need to dig them out...(I love them and have many in my garden this year also, great for filler in bouquets.

Carole, I love, love, love my box of goodies! I only have a few ferns started and I have several mints growing, but didn't have the mojito mint. I'm very excited with what I've just read about it!! Kathy sent you just as nice a box of goodies as you sent me! My neighbors have a lot of Eastern bluebirds and were telling me how specific the boxes and placements have to be. They've starting taking videos of them, too. They're such a great little bird for the backyard!

Joy and Susan, can't wait to see your goody boxes!

I hope to get my buddy's box mailed out by tomorrow afternoon or Tuesday morning. I'm sorry to be tardy, but I decided to make it myself and having trouble with the paint drying in this humidity. As a consolation, I'm making other things to include in the box!

Here are the pics of my haul from Chris, which I received on Friday. Rain has driven me inside to get caught up on my chores so I am choosing the computer instead. LOL
First is a decorative hand painted bird house, bee house and butterfly house which I have on a shelf in my bedroom. And she also sent me a journal made from elephant dung! I have heard of this project but have never gotten to see any of the products. It is an effort to save the African elephant by encouraging farmers to make money with a sustainable elephant product, dung. Dung is made of plant matter which is cellulose and can be processed into paper.
It's really cool, and no it doesn't smell!
She also sent me some garden stakes that are very funny and brightly colored as well as a slice of geode that has been painted with a covered bridge.

Thanks Chris and thans for hosting another great swap Cindy!

Linda... I.m the Goard guy. Not certain who sent you the first house. Glad you like it and hope that the light spots were reflections... ie, hope that I didn't tape the goard instead of the bubble wrap. There are seeds from the goard inside, so you may want to try them in your garden against a fence.

Well, now I need to find out who sent the other house? It came from a company, so no personal names on it?
Stu, the gourd is perfect, and yes the white is just the flash from the camera. I soaked the seeds last night and I am going to place a few on the fenced area's and see what happens! Thanks again for the beautiful gourd!

LK, I sprout my gourds seeds between damp paper towel and in a plastic bag. That way I know if thw seeds are good or not. Doesn't take too long for them to sprout.

Oh man I sure hope i did not give your name to two people LK. That would mean someone did not get a house. HELP!!!!! Please let me know whoever you are ^_^

Any clue yet about the mystery "blue" bird house? It's adorable.

Bev (and Scott) my gorgeous butterfly house arrived today... and all I can say is WOW!! You both are so talented! The little butterfly on the front is adorable and adds the homey touch that makes this house so very special. I can't believe you whittled it? It's so perfect! I love the idea of the gate - which also makes cleaning the house so convenient! Very clever...Thank you also for the lovely note with all the info - it's clear that you put much time and effort into making this very special for me.

I will plant the purple coneflower seeds in my 'Waystation' this weekend - they are perfect!
Also... the butterfly frame for framing my future butterfly visitor photos is adorable! (I just realized I didn't photograph it - but for everyone else... it's too cute with little butterflies all around it! And will definitely give me incentive to try to photograph my visitors!)

My husband was here watching me unwrap it and I think he caught the enthusiasm... he is already planning where he thinks it will look best in the Waystation... I will try to get another photo once we place it... but in the meantime I took it outside and snapped two photos so everyone could see how pretty it was. I'm not sure why...but the images of the house were rotated when I uploaded them to the thread... couldn't figure out how to fix that...

I had just d-mailed Cindy last night as I was becoming anxious that it hadn't arrived... I thought perhaps it had gotten lost in transit...but after reading your note I understand that the delay was due to all the care you put into creating it... thanks again... I feel so blessed to have this little homemade butterfly house from two lovely people in Virginia... I can feel all the love that was put into the project!!

And Cindy... thank you for hosting the swap!! -:) !

This clematis flower was waiting for me - right next to my box when I got home tonight!! It's the first flower after almost 3 years of patient growing!! Two surprises in one evening!!

Nancy, I'm so glad the swap box finally made it to California in good shape and that you liked everything! Scott will be happy, too!! He asked this morning if you had gotten it yet. Please do post pics after your DH gets it installed for you!

I love clematis and want to try growing a couple around my backyard swing. I've heard they're hard to get started!

Cindy, Yes, thank you so much for the swap and staying on top of everything!! I'll keep an eye out for next year's 3-B House Swap!!

Thanks for the kind words Susan.

Hey ELFIE...I remembered to take pix of my goodies. Thankyou again, so very much. Gotta scout out the best place to put these. Maybe the bat houses on the garage. Got one telephone pole I can put 1 bluebird house on, it's just outside my backfence about 3feet. The second one still not sure, I wanna be careful I get it high enough cuz we got barn cats in the neightborhood that like my garden, along with the fox, raccoons and sk--ks, (shhhh, don't say it outloud please, lol.) It's been prime hunting grounds for mice, voles (or whatever you call them), rabbits, you know critters, lol. Will find the perfect spot even if I have to put a pole up. Last spring on the other side of my property, the neighbor put up about 6 new bluebird house and I know they like several hundred feet of personal space, so I will keep evaluating and get them up in the next week.

Again, my birdies thankyou as do I!!!

Holy Moly!! Doing a happy dance here with tears in my eyes.. wow .. I received my birdhouse today. LK was my buddy and she totally blew me away with a VERY special house for the birds :)

She sent me two bags of Werther's candies..good stuff that is!
2 bags of caladiums (which I love!) one isWhite Christmas and the other is Caladium Buck (LOVE that color!)
A magazine on how to grow an easy garden.. I need that lol

and the birdhouse--- it's my new house!! blue with a white fence around it..it even has a birdhouse and nest with eggs in it.. and (it's not hanging up yet) a hummingbird feeder with a hummer! (look at the pot of red flowers and you can see it lying there beside it.)

I keep saying WOW over and over LOL..

thank you SO much, LK.. it will have a very special place on the front porch of the new house and I hope to get some new 'neighbors' soon! :)

Glad you liked the birdhouse Chris, but I must admit, it is store bought, I just added the fence, new coat of paint, the pot of flowers, bird nest, and the hummer feeder. And the little birdhouse came from Kris, she made it from polymer clay. the bird nest came from Bev.
