ATTENTION all participants, please read updated information!
THIS WILL CLOSE FRIDAY 2/17/2012, SO IF YOU WANT IN, JUMP IN NOW!! (or wait for the next one!) We are at 15 now!! WOW that was F-A-S-T!!!
Ok, there has been some interest expressed in coordinating a WOF by 2.5 inch strip exchange. Sounds like fun to me! I would really like to set this up so that it would NOT be necessary to purchase fabric in order to participate. One way I see this might be possible is if it were acceptable to "combine" 2.5 inch strips (compensating for seaming).
OK, simplified... please send the equilvent of 3 strips at 42 inches. OK??? NO need to get hung up on complicated math! You are all generous kind people so I know none of you will short anyone!
All cotton, state a choice of 3 colors and the deadline for sign up is CHANGED to 2/17/2012 Mail deadline is April 30, mail DIRECT to the participant. You can start mailing as soon possible, just remember sometimes people choose out early in the swap. UNLESS you state differently the colors you state will be in TOT, florals, and combinations as well as solids. Please do not get "too specific" as this is intended to come from your stashes & leftovers! Prewashed is best but if you have some already cut and not prewashed, don't eliminate it for possible use.
ANYONE not in the address exchange please dmail me your address and I will make a list of them so they can be Dmailed out to the particpants. Anyone with SPECIAL instructions like "please don't mail until April" please send me an email so I can post the instructions. Please Dmail me the address EVEN if you know I've had it in the past. PLease get in the habit of reading THIS post each time for updates and information. I will try to keep things as updated as frequently/ current a possible.
Psychw2(Pat)colors:Pink, black, White. Single color or combination of these colors, please do not include any other colors.

FLStu _Stuart - purples/lavenders, sages and gold/spicy mustard type.
MorknotMindy (Gloria) Browns, turquoise/teals and creams
Quilter (Jean) "color" (no beige, blank, white, or dark) Think "flower garden".
While it is PREFERABLE to send one continous piece at 42, I am hoping to have people avoid having to purchase fabric to be able to particpate. Please send a total of what would equal 3 pieces each totalling about 42 inches each. Do NOT join the pieces, this will enable people to move the choices around.
I am thinking of joining this, only I am slightly loss. I understood the whole WOF thing, and that was easy for me, do a 2.5" strip by the WOF and viola, lol. But when you started putting all those other things in I got loss. So, is this now scraps of 2.5" to equal a 42" strip? I think I liked it better as a 2.5" by the WOF and this way you can cut the 2.5" to any size piece you need. But, let me know what is happening first and if I am the only one feeling this way. I don't want to commit just yet until I understand fully what is happening. I think it may be too early in the am here too for me to comprehend this, lol. Thanks for your patience.
So far I understood you send, preferably, two continous 42" strips.
If not, compensate the lack by adding 3" more to each piece of fabric? If it takes 4 different fabrics-- just add 3" to each? So actual combined total will be 54" for that one long strip?
Just trying to clear the cobwebs here..kinda slow...
ETA: I'll be doing my best to send continous strips to all.
While it is PREFERABLE to send one continous piece at 42, I am hoping to have people avoid having to purchase fabric to be able to particpate. So yes, I am asking you to include 3 extra inches for EACH extra piece you need. Do NOT join the pieces, this will enable people to move the choices around.
I'm at work and will not be able to return to this thread until evening. Don't stress over the math, I'll help you if need be. The idea is if you can't provide ONE long piece, let's be sure we provide at least a generous amount of decent size strips to MORE than compensate for lack of one continous!
FEED BACK REQUIRED - I had imagined only 1 strip (or equal to) should this be TWO at 42"? So each person will have more to work with? I want it to be fun, usable and not a financial hardship on anyone!
Marion mentioned about not getting too caught up on the 44-45 thing... I agree, just didn't think about it when I posted. I just meant that if you put a bunch of strip sections together, you could visualize having a strip about the same length as a strip cut off the WOF. Usually, the more I try to describe so everybody understands, it gets lost in the translation... LOL So I'll let it go at that. I'm just going to send a bunch of strips... ROFL
OK, I have amended the first post to state the requirements. I have edited the 2nd post to update all the participants. PLEASE everybody read and acknowledge so I know that you choose in!! PLEASE tell me of any corrections if I have stated your colors your name or anything else wrong.
I am happy to see you checking in Thunder. I was beginning to worry. Understand about computer problems completely, my email got hacked into and what a mess to get cleaned up!! I have been assured it is okay now--for what ever that is worth.
No prob Helene, I don't know my self whether I'm coming or going. LOL
I do want to say that I don't want to be holding anyone up by not sending until April. If it's a problem for anyone just let me know and I'll sit this one out. There'll be another one soon enough that I can get in on.
Isn't it odd how one person at the post office will charge you an extra 20 cents to mail a business size #10 envelope with a block, and another one will tell you to just put a Forever stamp on the same thing? I never know whether to send out in the mailbox with one stamp or take them to the PO to check for sure.. I just don't want anyone to get a free block 'postage due'... LOL (not for sure if they would really do that, but I would be totally embarrassed if that happened. How do you all decide whether to send with one stamp or whether to add more postage?
I know Canada or Europe takes more, that isn't a problem... it would be so much easier if I can just stamp and toss in the mailbox for the mail lady, instead of driving to the PO, only to find out I could have just used one stamp... LOL
Last time I mailed out a bunch of blocks, all the same... I took them to the post office, and told him I needed to know what it would take for postage. He weighed each one, and gave me all kinda of prices. When I told him they were all identical, then he tried to tell me it was the location. I said really, it cost more to mail from one place than another. By this time the manager came out, told that kid to leave, and they all went out with a 64 cent stamp. Just all depends on who is working, and what kind of mood I guess?
I go to PO just to be on the safe side. I've had them return envelopes to me. I have a choice of two PO's near me one would just send them through with one stamp, the other put every one through a slot and if they didn't fit (even though all were the same thing) would charge extra postage. Oh and by not fitting, I mean if it doesn't just drop through the slot freely. Sometimes I swear it all depends on the mood of the clerk. If it's returned to me, I've wasted an envelope and a stamp, and I still have to go to the PO.
I use Tyvek envelopes, they are more costy but I know they won't rip. I have received damaged items and worse torn up empty envelopes.
Karen, I agree... the funny thing is, the first lady that charged me an extra 20 cents for 'hand stamping', showed me the slot that it had to fit thru. "only 1/4" items and under for one stamp", even though it was just a single block in a #10 envelope. The guy yesterday weighed one, picked it up and looked at it, mashed it down with his hand and said "yep, just one stamp will do, as long as they're all the same". He's worked there for years, very friendly, but you get a different person everytime you go in there.
I never thought about damaged envelopes... if anyone ever gets a damaged or empty envelope from me, please let me know ASAP! I've not rec'd any damaged ones from anyone, but we used to when I worked in the office..LOL sometimes you rec'd a plastic bag from the PO with a scrap of paper in it for ID, saying it was damaged in their machines.. My quilt blocks aren't worth a fortune, but I spend time putting them together and sending them out, don't want anyone to get a bad one..
I'll look into those Tyvek envelopes, do you get those at the PO or office supply?
Dad gave me a small digital scale, guess I'll have to weigh one an envelope when I start to send out strip sets. Will look for the tyvek envelopes at Office Depot this weekend... Our PO has a lot to drive up into, but there's still a ramp to enter the main area. There's also parking on the street, with either multiple sets of steps or a steep winding ramp to get to the front door. Either way, I get exercise just to mail these out to y'all...LOL
The "stairs, ramps etc" stuff SUCKS. When I hurt my knee ANy walking hurt like the dickens, and JUST stepping off a curb was enough to bring tears to my eyes. My wonderful co-workers were walking my clients to me so I could cut down on the walking.
2 stamps or one... like you all said, think it's depends on the mood of the employee that day!
I sorted my stash, and there are scraps that meet the preferences of some, but aren't "jelly roll" sizes yet.
So, I was thinking of leaving the fabric untouched, in case you can use it for something else. Like a 5" wide fabric, that one can use for charm squares.
I promise to send the whole WOF.
If anyone object, please let me know, I'll cut them down to the required 2 1/2".
Karen. No problems waiting. Mine aren't going out until March sometime unless I get done with the quilt projects first. Nearly finished putting the front on the Best of Breed Lap Q front together. Next to back and bind the three trophies and get started on the auction Lap Q.
Jaye, ok by me too. Mine will not be going out until next month. Have to make a baby quilt (getting paid for it), was told needed in 6 months, turns out within 3 months. Figure it has to jump to top of "To Do" list.
there is a free site with 34 pages of downloadable patterns. One of the patterns would be PERFECT for this swap. I should have copied or noted at least which page but I didn't let me know if you want the info and don't to look yourself thru ALL 34 pages (with about 6 or 8 patterns per page). Did I mention FREE pdf files? FREE?? LOL http://www.blankquilting.com/freepatterns.aspx Kathy/Kizmo posted the link on another thread.
My strips came in yesterday Helene. Love them! It is amazing with all these exchanges that I haven't received any pieces like I already have in my collection. Boggles the mind to think there is that much different fabric in this world and I am not able to see it all. LOL
Jaye, have you check out some of the tutorials on You Tube by the Missiouri Star Quilt Co. They have some really neat ideas using the 2.5" strips.
So what is wrong with hoarding fabric? LOL If there is ever a shortage at least we will be the ones prepared.
Helene, I got the fabric and it is beautiful. I'm sure this will be a FUN fabric exchange!
Thru a series of "events" we will be having our 4 year grandson staying with us for a week while my husband holds down the fort with my sister's ebay business, & cooks meals for my father! My son has a temporary job 6:30 to 6:30 EVERY DAY for a couple of weeks. He normally works for my Sister. She's going to be out of town for 2 weeks and my Dad lives with her!
I also received some beautiful fabrics from Helene, but haven't been able to post from home. Thanks so much and I'll get a picture going when I can post from home to DG.
I may be a bit irratic with my postings for a couple of weeks. Some things going on at work that are a bit stressful and need to center myself a bit until we get more info in a couple of weeks. So, if you don't see me posting, know that I'm still reading.
Very happy that everyone is happy too.
Stu i found that extra piece thinking for Dogie quilts you are making.
Pat we talked a while ago about Civil war fabric and I thought that piece would work.
Chinese coin quilt very pretty. Not sure what I'll think up with my strips.I made this for my DD the collection is "Spumoni" she loves the quilt. Made similar for the younger DD as well. Love working with precuts. I never thought I would.
Morning, thanks for birthday wishes Quilter..had a wonderful day!
Will celebrate today ...horrific winds so best place will be inside sewing. Should have been yesterday as well but with all the friends and family dropping in I decided to finish a stained glass piece for front room window.
Will get breakfast and in between meandering. Lol. Will cut a few strip and start this adventure!
Received from Morknotmindy, Kizmo and Quilter5bdr - all match very well together. Gloria also had 2 cream strips and the green in the pix. If all others are same will make a nice soft quilt. Thank you ladies.
Oh man... i've never heard of Hummingbird cake but if it's as good as it looks... CUT ME A BIG PIECE!!! LOL Happy Birthday Stuart.
thanks to Kathy (kiz) & Gloria (Mork) for the fabric strips. They are beautiful!!!
My Sweetie went to the PCP today and they referred him to a cardiologist today. He still feels so lousy. Poor guy, I'm no help, I'm not feeling good and putting in 10-12 hour days at work right now. We are facing another whole week of file "maintenance" next week getting ready for the Audit. I'm still trying to take care of "problems" documented from the last week's review!
Thanks again everyone for the B-Day wishes. I did get several strip packages this week and will acknowledge them after tomorrow and I get completed with the last lap Q for next week's Nationals. Finished the front last night. Going to back, pin and, hopefully, quilt it tonite and do the binding tommorrow. Will show pictures of all when done and if DG and my computer at home start talking again.
I have most of the strips identified & in piles. I'm realizing I've really dwindled my scrap pile done making scrappy quilts. Hopefully what I have to send will be what you are looking for.
Also, we have an offer on our house in MD. Not a very good offer so I don't know if the Sale will happen. We have countered and guess we will know something in the next couple days.
If this does happen, closing is set for mid-April. Still best to mail to the MD address. I will let all know if that does change.
But, this AM I'm going to the Home, Garden, & Orchid Show. I'm always terrible inspired afterward and the yard/gardens in FL need a lot of work & inspiration!!!! Np more than 1 Orchid baby can follow mw home today!!!
Wooohooooo!!! Kathy Kiz, thank you!! Awesome shades of red and love the blues and whites. Thank you for sending me such a LARGE helping of strips.
I thought of doing Chinese coin, but since most of what I've received are solids, I might lean towards a bargello. The solids will stand out more in a simple bargello.
Anyway, I might as well make use of the book I got just for that a few years ago :(
Jean, good luck on the sale of your house. Enjoy the orchid show. Think you'll buy the whole orchid farm!!
You're welcome Jaye! Are the Chinese Coins cut from 2 1/2" strips? Could you cut them in half lengthwise then stack them, alternating the solids and prints?
I'll be using the original width and all the given strips. If I were to do Bargello, the infrequent prints would make it more interesting!
Received beautiful strips from Barb yesterday. They are perfect! Isn't it fun to receive a gift from a fellow fabric 'nut'? Our stashes are so deversified and beautiful and it is such a treat to share. Not only fabric but information and encouragement and humor. Quilters are such nice people.
Dear friends, After much soul searching, I feel I must drop out of the swaps I'm currently signed up for. Its possible I will be making yet another move when I return to Michigan. Still not the move I want to make but I suppose eventually I'll get there. We still have one home for sale and it's undecided if I will stay there while my hubby is working downstate or if I will look for a place for us to rent temporarily. We still have work to do on the up north place so I suppose staying there and supervising is the best thing to do. Hubby could come up on week-ends. Other choice is to rent it out again for the summer and rent a place for us down state. UGH another move...not fun.
I'm so sorry to have to drop out but keeping these swaps open is just too stressful right now. Love you all and I'll still be lurking here.
Karen - I can sure relate to the stress of not know where you will be living and having multiple houses to keep track of. My DH has been down in FL the past month supervising activities down there. And it seems everytime I go looking for a fabric, it is not where I am.
Best of luck to you...
But, your fabrics are all packed and ready to go and I'll gladly send them "somewhere". Don't require any in return. Let me know...
I too have some strips ready to go - No need for any return. I mean I can certainly spare a couple of strips. You may not use them now -- thinking a pkg. or two in these strange times of your life can't hurt. HD
Oh Stu, you're getting some "good stuff!" I wasn't too sure of your mustardy choice but seeing together has changed my mind!!! LOL... that's one of the benefits of working /seeing someone else's color choices.
It's been a rough day. Sweetie saw the cardiologst and will have more tests next week and likely a stent same day. His sister was admitted today for emergency pace maker. Any wonder I could not concentrate at work today? We are preparing for an audit and it is NOT going well.
Ditto on all the other sentiments expressed Karen. Just let me know where to send the strips when you have an address. No need for reurn strips.
I have been recieving strips too and love them all. I hope to get mine cut on Friday/Saturday and get them in the mail next week. Will try to post a picutre this weekend too. It is so fun getting surprise mail.
LOL too many threads... I posted on the wrong forum, but Thank you Jean for the great strips! My neutral color selections are going to look really nice, if I can just decide what pattern I'm using for them.. been Googling too many patterns!
Wow!!!! I am glad LK led me to this swap.
Got Jean's and LK's beautiful strips and again, I can't get over your generosity.
I love both your blue and white prints, LK and Jean!!!
Amd patriotic prints will certainly add some charm to whatever I'll be doing!!!!
My DH caught the cold now... so I'm hoping it will not aggravate mine more.
After careful thought, literally lots of pain ( anxiety chest pain issues ), I've decided something HAS TO GIVE. I guess on Tuesday I'll have a chat with my employer, I CANNOT meet their expectations. I know an Audit is coming. I know there is work that needs to be done "or else" but giving up my health is not the way to long term accomplish anything. We'll come up with a working solution that meets every body's needs or they will have to fire me.
I've generated a list of ideas on how we can get some skilled help. Beyond that I guess they will have to make some hard choices.
