Perennials: Misquito Pplant questions

One of my patients has a misquito plant, I know that it is a scented geranium. What I would like to know, does it really repell the nasty little critters or not? She can't have it in the house because of allergies, so it sets outside the back door all summer and I am babysitting for the winter. Any advise will help.
