You were quite right to caution people to consult their doctors before taking herbal meds as they can have bad interactions with other drugs - after all, they are drugs too, just in a natural and unprocessed state.
HOWEVER, the caution comes with the fact that many (most) doctors know nothing about herbal meds - at least doctors in North America. Most cannot seem to wrap their heads around the idea that something that doesn't come from the pharmaceutical factory can have any effect at all.
I remember being sent to a specialitst not too many years ago, and he asked me what drugs I was taking. I listed them all, including my herbal stuff, and later I heard him dictating his report and he lumped all the herbals together as "a bunch of vitamins"!!!!
As I had educated my own family doctor over the years about herbals and their uses and cautions, I was not aware until then how ignorant most doctors were about this subject. I wrote a letter to my family doctor, listing the herbals commonly used, with their interactions with other drugs and the associated cautions, and blasted the ignorance of the specialist, and asked my doctor to pass it on, please.
Things like blood thinning properties and so on have to be known before we can safely take any drugs, and herbals are no exception. So people may have to research this themselves rather than rely on their doctors.
That said, another great article Adina. Have you dug your way out of the snow yet? We look to be getting an early spring here so that makes me happy, but still haven't had time to start my tomatoes and other stuff yet. Got to get going . . .
It's especially important to check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other prescription medications. Hypericum is well-known to have drug interactions with several types of drugs including oral contraceptives, antivirals, antidepressants. Better safe than sorry!
Marilyn, thanks for sharing about your experience with your doctor. Some have the same attitude here, but we have a great heritage in knowing the herbals uses and it's going on from generation to generation.
Yes, we are almost without snow now, it's thawing fast now with the high temps we've had on the last few days.
Kjd, thanks for posting again the link from my article. I couldn't agree with you more!
