Here is the (juvenile male) female sticking out his tongue perched on the top of the wisteria growing in our backyard. This was taken in February 2012.

Thank you Lily Love. Yes, he hung around for more than a month before he was chased away by another more mature male who is now hogging the feeders and the flowers in our backyard :) However, he is elusive and so no photos to speak of. I also see another hummer sometimes, who gets chased out, and hence I do not know if it is this guy.

You just described a typical activity of my hummers in the garden. Though, this year I haven't seen them yet. It could be any day now. Thank you for sharing yours.

Lovely! There has been some talk among the Illinois listserv about people thinking they are sighting early Ruby-Throat HBs when in fact they may be different species. And that photo makes me wonder if it is not a Rufous or something with that coppery tail. Maybe it is just the light.

Been asked to look in here ;-)

It does look rufous at the base of the tail, so it could be a Selasphorus hummer (Rufous / Allen's / Broad-tailed), but I'd like to see more pics to be sure - like you say, a trick of the light is also possible.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have ANY kind of hummingbird at my feeder, but it would be extra cool to have an unlikely species at my feeder.

Thank you for your comments. It will be so cool if he turns out to be Rufous. Those are very rare on this side of the Mississippi River. I will look through the archives and see if there are more pics of that guy. Now that you say it, I think he did look large for a RT male. My wife made a comment to that effect, but we really did not make any additional effort to identify him better.

There were two mature RT males duking it out at our feeder this weekend. It is really fun watching them trying to out smart the other. :)

    Wow. . .Congrats, MajiA!!

Also, thanks for the pics - all of you with hummers (you have to know how jealous that makes me).

A few weeks ago while keeping track of the Rubies on 'Hummingbirds.net', I saw they were still way south. Then, suddenly, about a week later they were all the way to Canada! Soooo... In a panic, I quickly made some sugar water and as soon as it cooled, filled 3 feeders...then waited...and waited...and... You get the picture.

I just checked again and they now have a little article about the strange migration this year. For those of you unfamiliar with the site (one of the best around) I'll put the link in the following post since I forgot to get it for this one.

I've had some of my feeders out for about a month (since the migration map showed lots of early hummers).
No hummers yet, but I'm expecting some in the next couple of days.

Our Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks arrived a few days ago and I saw Orioles yesterday. The Hummers usually come between the third week in April to the first week in May. We have a Mallard pair that have been visiting for about 5 years and they've been here for weeks.

It's funny the way they all "just-show-up", like it's just another day at the office.

I was just thinking the same thing. I keep seeing mid west posts here the last 48 on the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, the RT Hummers, and the Orioles.

I had my RB Grosbeak all day yesterday and RT hummers constant for the last 48 hours, but still no Orioles. My Oranges and Jams are out but all I seem to attract are bees and flies lol.

Sprout13 - Normally the Orioles fly right over to the oranges, grape jelly or sugar water feeder, but the ones I saw yesterday (adult males) were more interested in the suet feeders. Go figure.
Congrats on the constant hummers. Your Orioles will probably show up any day.

Lily_love - Fine by me if you like that saying. Glad to hear you have both males & females. Our females won't show up for a bit, yet.

You should have seen me by the window when the little male showed up. It's amazing how one tiny little jewel can make a grown woman act like a nut-case. I was jumping all around and cheering!

I want to share with you the success we had with a homemade feeder we put up yesterday. Now I just need to figure out how to make a homemade ant moat.

We were trying to come up with the best solution to hang it and my husband thought of duct tape. It works. LOL

Very inventive, Chillybean. Just a thought with the duct tape. Is the inner surface of the duct tape still sticky or have you double sided it, i.e. put sticky side to sticky side so there's no exposed sticky? Just thinking that if one of them wandered around the top, it might inadvertently get stuck on the tape. :)

Hello Margaret. That was my first thought when my husband showed it to me before I had a good look, but nope, he already thought of it and there is no exposed stickiness.

Oh, no problem. I thought it was a good question. Because I blogged about this, I should make note of that in case others try this. We found the instructions on another blog, but had to improvise how to hang it. Any time we use string, it breaks in the strong winds.

    Chillybean'

What did you use to fasten the bottle to the botton? Could you direct me to the instructions? I have made them with wine bottles and decorated and hung them with colored craft wire. But the darned feeder tubes I got on line leak or drip all the time. I love wire wrapping for jewlery etc and this was fun to be creative etc but the feeder part doesn't work right.
    Would appreciate your info
    Thanks, Lynda

    Lynda,
This was the link I came across doing a Google search when looking for instructions to make a homemade feeder.
    http://almostunschoolers.blogspot.com/2011/04/homemade-hummi...

I tried writing explaining it all, but I was making no sense, so just go to the link above. It really is incredibly easy. The hummies are coming to it daily.
