I recently moved in the fall to a new house (just outside Oshkosh, WI) and have been cleaning up the yard the last few weekends to get ready for some planting. There was a very overgrown, unmaintained flower garden area that I uncovered. Within it are a few dozen of these things. My husband says they look like pine cones with roots, but they're hard and remind me of a pineapple. They've just recently started growing, which is the pictures I've attached. I know very little about plants/flowers (I'm a growing green thumb), so I'm not sure what these are. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

They are ferns... ostrich fern, I'd guess but not sure.

    Are they fiddleheads?

Definitely a fern, but until it grows out, it's hard to tell which one. There are over 12,000 varieties!

Yes, they are fiddleheads (unfurled fern fronds). You probably won't be able to identify it until they finish growing out.

I'd say ostrich ferns, too. In my shade garden they grow about 2 ft. tall.
