This little fellow just appeared in my lawn in Dedham, MA, this weekend (April 28, 2012). Who is he?

Reminds me of the cotyledon of a plant. Character leaves to follow.

It's showing no signs of new leaves, so I'm thinking these are not cotyledon. I checked with the U Mass extension service, and got a reply that they didn't recognize it but thought possibly it might be the fruiting part of a fungus. Someone else thought it might be a stranger blown in by Hurricane Irene, but no one so far has positively identified it.

Give it a bit of time and more images of that structure on the top would help narrow it down.

I can only say it's funny and interesting.
The thing in the middle would be a flower bud?

I can't tell if it's a flower or a radio antenna, but overall it looks more like the latter.

I agree with Resin and I think it might be worth seeing what colour the folliage is.

My word! I thought I'd seen it before but couldn't place it at all. Thanks Resin.

Yep, it is a mite coppery (wild seedlings are green), though I doubt it would make a good Copper Beech.

Thank you, Resin, for solving my mystery. There are in fact several copper beeches in the vicinity as well as European beeches, but I had not seen a seedling before.
